They really don't need to be open today, seems silly that most are open Sunday hours and taking people away from enjoying the day with family

I was complaining about the gym shut on days that wasn't a bank holiday! Also I've paid for the gym, very different to shops.i support them not being open today and the other bank holiday!

I live abroad in a very catholic country. The shops are open on Sundays and today. People are still able to spend time with family.
If you want to spend time with your family, just don’t go shopping?

Ollivander84 · 01/01/2019 13:59

@KimchiLaLa I've just done a food shop!

Schuyler · 01/01/2019 14:08

Why should the gym employees not have a break? Dont they have family?

paddlingwhenIshouldbeworking · 01/01/2019 14:10

If things continue as they are there won't be as many employed in retail this time next year.

feelingverylazytoday · 01/01/2019 14:12

My son worked (in a shop) yesterday and today, in exchange for Christmas Eve and boxing day off. All the staff got the choice, apparently. My son was perfectly happy with working today. He's a student and needs the money but he actually enjoys his job, believe it or not.
I understand New years day is a very important day in Scotland but it really isn't in the SE of England, and I can't imagine many people particularly wanting it off, apart from practical issues such as childcare or transport.

Errr no. On this thread you have said in a number of posts that shops should only be open Mon-Fri.

On your gym thread you are annoyed because they aren't open 4 days. Two of which are a Sat and Sun.

Can't have it both ways just to suit yourself.

I thought it was considered bad form on MN to look up OP’s other threads and bring them into a current one (abuse and other safety concerns excepted)?

I’m not in Scotland and NYD has always been viewed as a big day off where I am and when I was growing up elsewhere. Either to sleep off a hangover or spend time with family.

khaleesi71 · 01/01/2019 14:21

I think it's about choice and availability. Our society has changed due to demand and we now benefit from shops being open for longer. It's suits many people for a variety of reasons and those who are able to work 9-5 in their local area are fortunate to be able to use shops on a traditional pattern if they wish to. Those who work shifts or commute or have additional voluntary work means they need shops to be open in non traditional times. Retail outlets need sufficient staff to cover their operating requirements, which would result in a rota that permits staff to work their contracted hours. They should all pay a living wage but some retail outlets are much less responsible than others - no different (or better) to many other sectors.

Our high streets are dying because online shops are meeting our needs more closely - so shops must stay open to compete.

OP - I expect your family can't simply get other jobs in the manner you have suggested to other posters. Whilst you might be having a whinge you have a remarkable lack of insight and as this thread shows - the MN world doesn't agree. Probably because there is a whole spectrum of lifestyles that seem to be beyond your understanding.

Can't see the problem when posyers are being hypocritical. If it isn't to be used then get rid of AS then. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Belindabauer · 01/01/2019 14:25

Lots of angry people on here.
I really do t think it's necessary for shops to open today or boxing day.
The emergency services are different.
My gym is closed today and I really don't begrudge staff that.

Belindabauer · 01/01/2019 14:27

As for the online shopping argument, I've bought several things on line which are not available in store, I've been to the stores and checked.

RainbowBriteRules · 01/01/2019 14:28

Piglet, well yes I think we should get rid of AS except to let you look up your own threads. I’m also in the camp that thinks all threads should be automatically deleted though whereas I know most of MN seems to disagree. It’s an anonymous forum; loads of people are probably lying / embellishing a lot of the time anyway.

Rosepetalgeranium · 01/01/2019 14:39

If you're going to look up my other posts at least read them!

Wanting the gym open on non back holiday days over the Christmas period and wanting shops shut on bank holidays is not hypocritical at allHmm

Unless you don't bother to read my posts and see I support the gym being closed for the bank holiday! Hmm

OP posts:
ChrisjenAvasarala · 01/01/2019 14:44

But you want shops shut on Saturday and Sunday too. Those aren't bank holidays. So we'd also have to shut gyms, cinemas, bowling, ice rinks.... all of it. For "family time". So everyone who WANTS or NEEDS to work weekends will be left without income and families will be left without entertaining activities to do together.

Great plan!

Rosepetalgeranium · 01/01/2019 14:46

Retail and lesuire are different, again read my other post correctly but the point was I paid for it to be open all days apart from Bank holidays and they changed the hours and put up the price.

There's no conflict here at all, unless you're trying to be argumentative..

OP posts:
JacquesHammer · 01/01/2019 14:51

Retail and lesuire are different

And yet both require people to work your version of anti-social hours?

LaurieMarlow · 01/01/2019 14:53

but the point was I paid for it to be open all days apart from Bank holidays

Double check your contract on this. I'm sure they've covered their arse.

If they haven't you may be able to take legal action.

But I'd be surprised.

LaurieMarlow · 01/01/2019 15:00

Retail and lesuire are different

Because 'my family work in retail not leisure'

Or because 'I want to avail of leisure facilities over the Christmas period but not retail'

Little bit of column A, little bit of column B? Wink

Point is, retail workers know that they'll have to work bank holidays when they sign up. If they feel so strongly, they should look elsewhere for jobs.

2019rubberband · 01/01/2019 15:12

You said you want shops to close weekends as well, so not just bank holidays.

Can't quite work out why you can't see how ridiculous you are being.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 01/01/2019 15:29

Retail and lesuire are different

Only in as far as selfish reasons. You want leisure to be open so you can use it and retail to be closed so you aren't alone.

You want retail closed for family time but don't seem to care about leisure outlets family time.

It is complete hypocrisy and you don't see it because you chose not to.

ReanimatedSGB · 01/01/2019 15:30

Oh FFS I am very tired of whiny idiots trying to prevent shops from opening on bank holidays. You stupid people are likely to harm others with your outdated attitudes. If you get your way, what happens is the most exploitative employers make a big token gesture of shutting 'so our valued staff can spend more time with their families' - but they don't give them any extra hours, so they lose money. Yes, all the industries which require staff on bank holidays should pay time and a half, at least, but they should also pay decent wages anyway. Plenty of people don't care about Xmas or NY, or don't have families, or would rather have a break from their families, or just really, really need the money.
