They really don't need to be open today, seems silly that most are open Sunday hours and taking people away from enjoying the day with family

Not somewhere for logic and ideas to help benefit society and famous life.

You are presuming everyone has a family they want to spend time with. Many retail workers are working out of choice, they have the option to take the day as annual leave. I loved working bank holidays for the extra £££

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 01/01/2019 12:09

All those people working in Tesco I'm sure would rather not work!

Don't be so ridiculous and a GF.

If you want to go shopping today sure do it, but this thread is about solidarity with those forced to work and taken away from leisure time

Interesting you only show 'solidarity' with shop workers, not also the many other jobs that work today and also did Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

I mean where was your solidarity with those working in restaurants on Christmas Day or pubs last night or office workers that have been in all over Christmas or the emergancy services or.....

minisoksmakehardwork · 01/01/2019 12:09

Does shutting also apply to all the 'tourist attractions/pubs/restaurants' that the people who are now off under your stance will be spending time with family at?

If you have essential services only, which ones are you including? There are so many jobs which get forgotten in the chants of support for emergency services - the essential services. Where do you draw the line at who is allowed to work given they really aren't all paid a bonus for working a bank holiday, they get the day off in lieu instead.

GerryblewuptheER · 01/01/2019 12:09

Not somewhere for logic and ideas to help benefit society and family life

Yeah an isolated skint parent is really a benefit to society and family life.

Purplecatshopaholic · 01/01/2019 12:10

I think you're well intentioned OP, but I also think you are probably coming from the view point of someone who doesn't work unsociable hours yourself - I don't either, so I don't assume what people who do, think about it. We need to remember of those that do, many like to do it and we all need the money one way or another.

ChrisjenAvasarala · 01/01/2019 12:11

@Rosepetalgeranium

Idiotic ideas that everything outside of emergency services should be shut on Saturdays and Sundays.

You're ignoring what people are saying because you can't admit you didn't consider students, childcare costs for families who would he stopped from working different days, the economic meltdown of closing everything, the difficulty of getting to the shops during the weekend. In my case, I take my elderly mother shopping at the weekends because she can't go herself and I can't go pick her up at 8pm during the weel when I finish and take her shopping because nothing is open. It's the only chance she gets to get out of the house, enjoy going round the shops and going for some lunch and nice coffee. There are millions of people in that situation.

You're idea is stupid. End of.

TeIlIo · 01/01/2019 12:11

Idiotic ideas that people don't need to shop on New year's Day

At a wild guess I think thay poster is more referring to your shut shop at the weekends plan.

Felt for the youngster at the all night petrol station last night, new years eve on his own, I hope he was well paid

QuitMoaning · 01/01/2019 12:14

My OH works in the food takeaway industry so his hours are 7am until 12 midnight several days of the week including Saturdays.
So he only would have Sunday to do grocery shopping (although I do it as although I work full time in London, I do it at 8pm on my way home).
And what about other stuff we want to buy? We bought a sofa recently and spent several Sundays visiting different retailers. When would he do that (and we bought from an independent)?
And online deliveries? Only delivering during the week? I AM AT WORK.

You are so short sighted and living in a bubble that it is ridiculous. Are you trying to goad people deliberately?

cushioncuddle · 01/01/2019 12:14

Shops need to be open today otherwise even more will be spent on the internet.

These are the main times that shops make their money.

Canibuildasnowman · 01/01/2019 12:14

Absolutely. Those people would much rather be unemployed when the high street finally collapses.

coldheartwarmhands · 01/01/2019 12:16

The superstores are open 24 hours Monday to Friday. That's quite enough for the people that work full time which is usually 7.5-8 a day.

Several of my family members would have to get a ferry to reach a 24 hour supermarket - ah, but the ferries don't run after 10pm, so they'd get stuck with their shopping. Hmm

TheFairyCaravan · 01/01/2019 12:20

Shop workers/ waiters deserve higher wages’ - 🤔 oh I’m sorry - how many lives did you save/change today? In what way did your stacking jumpers in size order whilst chatting about X factor aid humanity?

IT DIDNT now take your £7 an hour and six off!

DS2 worked in a pub all the way through uni when he was training to be a nurse. It wasn't unheard of for him to do a short day on the ward then go straight to the pub. He did actually help save a woman's life when she took seriously ill in the pub. He's a staff nurse in A&E now, and is working tonight, so how about when you see these shop workers and waiters in future you actually stick your judgement where the sun don't shine?

53rdWay · 01/01/2019 12:20

Working bank holidays in retail was a lot better when all my colleagues were on time and a half or double time. That way there were always enough people happy for the shifts to swap with people who wanted the day off. Not so great when that got phased out for newer staff.

There would always be customers telling you what a shame it was you had to work while they were in the shop buying stuff too!

SauvignonBlanche · 01/01/2019 12:20

Amazon have a lock where the driver can enter your house to drop off things. I think that will come in for food shops too

Can’t decide if OP is just a bored GFer or an Amazon executive plotting the end of more shops? Hmm

Either way shouldn’t they get off MN and spend time with their family?

Rosepetalgeranium · 01/01/2019 12:23

Right last post, I'm not goading at all I don't think lots of people understand my ideas.

The Amazon smart lock style system could be used by shop workers to deliver food or goods while you are at work. Then people from the local shops have a job and can deliver while you are at work.

Rosepetalgeranium · 01/01/2019 12:24

I can't spend time with my family as I'm alone as others have been forced to work. That's the whole point of this thread 🤦

GerryblewuptheER · 01/01/2019 12:26

And what about their frozen stuff?

TeIlIo · 01/01/2019 12:27

Online shopping still requires workers to work odd hours, weekends and holidays though, so that's not solving the problem.

One of my friends is a single parent. She works either Christmas or New Year depending on whether she has her DC or not as she has no other family around to spend time with and she actually makes a profit as she's not paying for childcare. It's much more beneficial to her MH and therefore her DC to be working when she doesn't have them.

If a shop/hotel/business wants to open why shouldn't they?

GerryblewuptheER · 01/01/2019 12:31

And people aren't all forced to work.

It's expected t get so their hours it's expected that they all take turns in working Xmas eve boxing day new years eve etc to ensure one person doesn't work all of it.

And the tips come in handy. That's 50 quid extra I've had just for working days approaching Xmas and boxing day.

Paid for my night out and more!

Aeroflotgirl · 01/01/2019 12:32

I don't think op is being a GF, just misplaced sympathy really!
