To want a Dyson Airwrap

LadyHooHa · 29/12/2018 19:37

My hair is hideously straight. Poker straight. Not-in-a-good-way straight. Just sodding straight.

I have, over the years, spent much money on heated rollers. I've tried blow-drying with a big metal brush. I've tried every effing thing to get a bit of bounce into my stupid straight hair. My current curling device is Remington straighteners - it's fine for about 25 minutes (so long as there isn't a scrap of moisture in the air) but my hair is snapping off at the ends. It's long - or was, until it started snapping off. FML.

I covet the Dyson Airwrap. I could afford it if I gave up eating for several months, and cut back on several other things. But is it worth it?

I have one and it's one of the best gadgets I've bought. I have mid length very thick wavy frizzy hair and if I use the airwrap the frizzy is gone. Been battling frizzy for 30 years so I'm chuffed.

Plus after practice I can do my hair in 20 minutes with the smoothing brush and it looks great. I get compliments on my hair now.

GinBunnie · 29/12/2018 22:31

Can I recommend my new Christmas present? I got a Revlon Volumiser styler thingy and I love it. It's basically a big brush and hairdryer combined and makes drying/styling so much easier. It's honestly fantastic and about £60.

I now have sleek, bouncy hair with very little effort, which is good as I'm shite at hair styling!

pigletpie2177 · 29/12/2018 22:39

DH bought me one for Christmas. After I specifically said I was going to try my friend's (who I'm seeing tomorrow) then see if I could get a discount in January if it was any good.

Lovely of him but I'm still half annoyed that he ignored my comments and our pre-set budget.

So far I like it but I've only really done the smoothing tools. Think i might need some sort of product to set curls but no idea what to get!

LadyHooHa · 29/12/2018 22:39

Gin, is your hair poker straight and generally useless? If so, I'm very interested for that price!!

Wow! Thank you @amusedbush . I have poker straight hair so the diffuser tip I shall try tomorrow and the holding the dryer still rather than waving it too - I always wave! Grin

Another vote for the curl secret if your hair isn’t too long. Tonged curls would normally fall out by the time I’ve left the house but the curl secret ones last all night and leave beautiful waves the following day.

FredaFox · 30/12/2018 05:21

Is it heavy? For that money is ik e something lightweight. The Dyson hairdryers I've held aren't particularly light.
If I had an airwap I wouldn't need a hairdryer as well?

Bottomplasters · 30/12/2018 05:28

I don’t even know what it will do to my hair but you lot have me convinced!

ElizabethMainwaring · 30/12/2018 06:42

I tried the curl secret and sent it back. My hair got tangled in it straight away. It seemed quite dangerous, I was scared to use it. My hair is wavy, I think the curl secret is best for very straight hair. I know that some reviewers recommend straightening your hair before using the curl secret, which seems a bit counter productive, not to mention damaging and time consuming.

iamthewalrusgoogoogjoob · 30/12/2018 06:56

Op I posted this on another thread...

I initially bought it for the curling ability but have used it more for the volume brush. The volume I can get with it is fantastic. I have a Big Hair Styler thing but it doesn't compare. My hair is very fine and the airwrap is much better at getting 'grip' and leaves it way smoother. The Big Hair gives some volume but lots of fluff.

Curling I am still playing with. It definitely curls well, but I need to find the right product to fight frizz. Usually I straighten my hair before curling. With the airwrap it's not terribly frizzy but it could be smoother.

The smoothing brushes work well and give a nice professional blow dry look, I can go out without straightening my hair with my GHD after using them. (Which is saying something with my frizz.)

The hairdryer itself I really like. My hair dries quicker and seems less damaged. However I would love if it came with a nozzle like the dedicated hairdryer so I could control the direction of the air flow.

timetochuckthetree · 30/12/2018 07:02

I'd keep looking at them too. My chin length bob is flat and limp and the 'volume and shape' looks like it would solve my woes.
I've used BBH daily for years and my ends are fried.
Any other solutions for root lift and oomph?

lazymare · 30/12/2018 07:09

I hated the curl secret. Found it too heavy and I didn't like the curl it produced.

friskybivalves · 30/12/2018 07:15

OP, here's a piece about the Gin one in Elle mag

After much research and discussion with my hairdresser I bought for my teen the cloud 9 curling wand. Cloud 9 is owned by the original designer from ghd the quality is excellent, but about a third of the ghd price and it is the brand the hairdressers are now buying. DD is delighted with it.

lazymare · 30/12/2018 07:35

Cloud 9s are around the same price as GHDs now.

loveka · 30/12/2018 07:51

The curl secret is amazing. Once you get the hang of it it doesn't tangle your hair! The curls stay in as I day.

loveka · 30/12/2018 07:51

All day I meant.

GinBunnie · 30/12/2018 07:56

@LadyHooHa

No, it's not poker straight. But it IS useless. I have big hair when it's untamed, it's very fine though, I just have a lot of it. Because it's so fine it never holds a curl.

GinBunnie · 30/12/2018 07:58

It won't curl your hair though, it's more for giving it volume and making it a bit bouncy.

Blankiefan · 30/12/2018 08:26

I got the airwrap for Xmas. It's fab.

There is definitely a knack to using it and I'm getting better. The curls stay as well as they do with my curling iron. To when they drop, they turn into nice waves. Hair looks in super condition.

Someone asked if its heavy. The box is (in a "reassuringly expensive" way) But it's not heavy to hold. Also you only need to hold one hand ove your head which helps.

If you can afford it, I'd say get it.

amusedbush · 30/12/2018 13:49

pigletpie2177

If it makes you feel better I doubt you’ll get a discount anywhere. The Dyson hairdryer hasn’t been discounted anywhere since it was released, to my knowledge. I bought mine from Boots during an advantage card event and got £60 worth of points back, but I’ve never seen it with money off.

Mimimouse4 · 30/12/2018 18:47

I got it for Christmas.

It's amazing I really do love the blow dry look and my hair is so full. The curls when freshly done look perfect but they do drop out really quickly which is such a shame.

I have long hair and it's amazing to blow dry and curl at the same time which saves me soo much time.

I think if I had bought it I would've been slightly disappointed

SilverLake · 30/12/2018 19:22

If you live in London book a Digme spinning class. They have showers, towels and Dyson hairdryers including an Airwrap - you could test it out.

U2HasTheEdge · 30/12/2018 19:28

I desperately want one. I am so tempted to get one when my student finance comes next week.
