To want a Dyson Airwrap

My hair is hideously straight. Poker straight. Not-in-a-good-way straight. Just sodding straight.

I have, over the years, spent much money on heated rollers. I've tried blow-drying with a big metal brush. I've tried every effing thing to get a bit of bounce into my stupid straight hair. My current curling device is Remington straighteners - it's fine for about 25 minutes (so long as there isn't a scrap of moisture in the air) but my hair is snapping off at the ends. It's long - or was, until it started snapping off. FML.

I covet the Dyson Airwrap. I could afford it if I gave up eating for several months, and cut back on several other things. But is it worth it?

I absolutely love mine. Bought it with the full intention of returning if I wasn't 100% happy. I read that they automatically refund you once they scan the package at the post office so was confident I'd give it a fair trial.

I have extensions that usually take a hour to blow dry then I have to style.

I used it at 0830 this morning, still going strong

Tried mine out today and am really impressed. I am the most cack-handed person at drying my hair but once I had figured out which attachment to use (middle sized curl rod) and then worked out which way to curl my hair, I was away.

I only had a few minutes to try it out but still finished with a head full of voluminous bouncing curls that I would only normally have after a trip to the hairdresser.

I’m still jonesing after this. Must resist, must resist...

NyNameIs · 13/01/2019 16:25

That looks lovely Kato.

I did my sisters hair with mine today, her hair is thick, quite coarse and heavy so the total opposite to mine, I was in a rush so sections weren't as small as they should have been and her hair was dry so I just ran a wet brush through to dampen slightly, no product used other than a spritz of TIGI felxi hold once finished with the curls. I wasn't expecting much with her hair being so thick I assumed the curls would drop out quickly but they've held really well.

Right, I'm back. On Saturday I used the larger barrels to curl my hair and LOVED it. Much more the style I'm looking for so those will be my go-to over the smaller barrels.

Yesterday I used the firm smoothing brush to dry it straight and I was blown away (no pun intended Grin) by how smooth my hair looked. I can also feel how much moisture it's retaining compared to a hairdryer and straighteners. It's not poker straight but it is smooth with a little bit of body and attracted compliments from a colleague.

I wanted to hate the Airwrap so I could send it back and get over my obsession but I really, really like it. I have long-ish hair and I'm growing it out even more so I think it's a worthwhile investment to have styled hair without the damage. The monthly payments with QVC take some of the sting out of the price too.

If you have short hair and get regular cuts to maintain a shorter style then £400+ probably isn't worth it. If you have long/damaged/dry hair that requires lots of attention but you are conscious of heat then I definitely recommend this tool.

After reading all this I really want one. Blush

Not a good time for finances though as at the end of Mat leave. Though I'm sorely tempted to use a pot of money I'd earmarked for something else. That almost certainly isn't a good idea tho.

I feel like I've been searching for the hair holy grail all my life. Grin

OliviaBenson · 16/01/2019 13:48

I have straight hair that I curl under as a bob. I was considering the hairdryer but would this work for straight hair too as a day to day product?

HappenstanceMarmite · 16/01/2019 18:59

I’ve used it a few times now. I love the curl it gives...BUT...the curls drop within an hour. I’ve even redone one side as the curls dropped whilst I curled the other side! I am strictly following the rules around damp hair and cold shot. Last time I added mousse as I read that it might be because my hair was too silky, but still fell out. I’m on the verge of giving up and I’m sad because I love the idea of the Airwrap.

Suggestions welcome

Same Marmite... suggestions also welcome!

teenangstpsychoanalyst · 17/01/2019 16:23

The Dyson website is back in stock!

Stopwoofing · 17/01/2019 17:05

Just had an email! 2-3 week dispatch!!

Stopwoofing · 17/01/2019 17:08

I think it’s gone out of stock again already! Damn!!

PickleFish · 17/01/2019 18:23

I ordered one from Dyson, not sure how soon it'll come though.

What are the best videos/you tubes to watch to learn how to use it? I have frizzy curly thick hair, so I'd probably want to smooth it but still keep the natural curl (or add the curl back in if needed)

Tips of how to do it or what to watch, so that I know what to do when it comes?

teenangstpsychoanalyst · 18/01/2019 13:22

@PickleFish I was lucky too. Have you had a confirmation/delivery date email yet? I've had nothing apart from my paypal receipt. I just know this gadget will not be like the other eleventy billion I have in an effort to make someone of my flat skinny hair 🤣

PickleFish · 18/01/2019 13:31

I had an order confirmation email, but the money hasn't gone out of my account (I used visa card), so I'll remain slightly skeptical until there is a delivery date!!

PickleFish · 18/01/2019 15:09

And have had a dispatch note now too; saying dispatched today, rather than in the 1-3 weeks that was suggested when I ordered.

teenangstpsychoanalyst · 18/01/2019 20:10

@PickleFish I'm excited for you! (And jealous 😜)

PickleFish · 18/01/2019 20:16

I hope you get your confirmation soon!

I'm not quite sure how to start with it really. I have naturally curly hair, but it's quite frizzy at times. I'd like to have it smooth and shiny, but still in its curls. So use the brushes? Or the barrels? Or both? I guess it means I need to smooth/straighten it first, and then curl it, but maybe the smoothing brushes will be enough to smooth it and keep the curl? I don't know. Also i'd like to be able to do it in the evening, and have it last overnight. And of course the moon on a stick to go with that!

lazymare · 19/01/2019 13:00

There's a YouTube tutorial thesmallthings blog where she smooths her hair first then curls it.

LuluJakey1 · 19/01/2019 13:05

My friend has poker straight hair that she can not get any lift into with anything and got a Dyson Airwrap for Christmas. She says it is a waste of money, still has poker straight hair. Her daughter who has fine hair that takes curl uses it and loves it

lazymare · 19/01/2019 13:15

My hair is naturally beachy waves but the curl still falls out within minutes if I use heat. I'm still obsessed with the idea of this though.

PickleFish · 19/01/2019 13:16

thanks, I'll look up the videos. It arrived this morning, so hopefully this evening I might have a chance to try it! Was impressed at how quick it was, given that the email said 2-3 weeks, the confirmation said 1-2 weeks, and actually it was 1 day.

Everytimeiseeher · 19/01/2019 13:51

I want one too and I nearly had it in December but my local courier “lost” the parcel. Grrrr.
I had been on a waiting list to get it from qvc. I check on there every week or so to see if they have them back in again but I seem to keep missing them when they get them back.

Anybody know when qvc are due them in again? I’m getting it on easypay so I can return if I don’t like it.

PickleFish · 19/01/2019 20:52

It's certainly going to take some practice! My hair is quite smooth and shiny now, which is good. But it's very thick, so it still mostly just stands out like a bush.

It doesn't have much curl now, just some wave (it's usually fairly curly when it's just let to air dry). I tried curling with the barrels, but I think I might have dried it too much with the smoothing brush first. or maybe it's too short. Because the barrels really just made it more voluminous and a bit wavy, but no ringlet type curls like it shows.

I had a lot of trouble getting the section of hair to wrap around the barrel. The air flow seemed to just blow it away rather than suck it in, no matter which side I used it on, or whether I held it in front of or behind the section of hair. Eventually some other hair would get sucked round, but not the bit that I intended.

Maybe I need to try it again with the hair still wet/damp, and try to use the curl barrels to dry it as well as curl it, and forget about smoothing it first.

I like it still, and it's certainly fast. But I could certainly get rid of the dryer that I already have ,as this does a similar job, and I don't know if it adds more with the curling barrels yet. I hope so!

LadyHooHa · 23/01/2019 19:54

Just an update. They are available for pre-order on QVC! I have just taken out a 28-month interest free credit card, so have bought one on that. Having read all the posts with great interest, I'd say I'm 'quietly hopeful', rather than 'beyond excited'. If it's no good, it's going back...
