To want a Dyson Airwrap

LadyHooHa · 29/12/2018 19:37

My hair is hideously straight. Poker straight. Not-in-a-good-way straight. Just sodding straight.

I have, over the years, spent much money on heated rollers. I've tried blow-drying with a big metal brush. I've tried every effing thing to get a bit of bounce into my stupid straight hair. My current curling device is Remington straighteners - it's fine for about 25 minutes (so long as there isn't a scrap of moisture in the air) but my hair is snapping off at the ends. It's long - or was, until it started snapping off. FML.

I covet the Dyson Airwrap. I could afford it if I gave up eating for several months, and cut back on several other things. But is it worth it?

@U2HasTheEdge
There's many different ways to hold the curling wand but, I've seen people hold it upside down like a traditional wand because it more comfortable, I've seen a few hairdressers wrap the hair round and keep ends out for a beach wave too rather than the full ringlet type curl.

I find using it on my own hair very different to how it feels doing someone else's hair if that makes sense. I find I get best result last when I've just washed it and waited until it mostly drys rather than spaying it damp.

I've seen many people use the smoothing brush before the curler and that looks nice too but I've not tried it yet.

If you don't like it at first it's def worth playing about with techniques and products. For day to day I love ghd curl hold spray on towel tried hair and manually wrapping round with ends out for beach waves, if I'm going out or want something special I love Tigi or Percy And Reed volumising shampoo with a bit of tigi curls rock amplifier and using smaller neater sections. That product is quite sticky though but once hair is dry it isn't.

I really hope you love it.

Oooh I’m so EXCITED to get mine!! Thanks for letting us know how you got on, I’ll update too when I get a chance to have a play with it.

I’m hoping the smoothing brush bit means I won’t need to use straighteners as often as I do now.

BillyAndTheSillies · 08/01/2019 19:40

From getting out of the shower to going downstairs took 40 minutes!
My hair isn't in the best condition but it's nice to have waves and curls with no tinged hair smell and for it not to feel like straw. The curls dropped very quickly but I'm hoping a bit of practice and some products will see a change in that.
I'm almost in love, but not quite!

There's also a lovely shine to it which I definitely don't get from curling tongs or straightening. But I really need to work on the fringe!!!! Good thing I'm growing it out.

BifsWif · 08/01/2019 19:55

That looks lovely Billy!

My hair is just below my chin so hoping it’s not too short and I can get lovely curls too.

LadyHooHa · 08/01/2019 20:05

Billy, thank you so much for posting those pics. Your hair is gorgeous!!

U2, thank you for the update. I am checking QVC obsessively. Grin

Watching with interest as I really want one, but am usually rubbish with styling so no idea why I think I'd be better with this! Just registered interest on the dyson site as you get longer to pay interest free though, so when they come back in there I might bite.

U2HasTheEdge · 08/01/2019 20:32

I tried curling my own hair and they were awful. They curled to the side and I looked like a poodle who licked a plug socket. My daughter tried and got a lovely curl, so it is obviously user error, but I can't figure out what I did wrong.

I did some lovely curls on my mum's hair but I need to get to grips with doing my own.

U2HasTheEdge · 08/01/2019 20:33

Thank you @Name.

I didn't mean to tag, I meant to bold the username.

BifsWif · 08/01/2019 20:42

Have you watched any tutorials U2? There are loads online. I’m sure you’ll get the hang of it soon.

IcedPurple · 08/01/2019 20:46

Now that's an image!

A lot of people are saying the curls don't hold, which really puts me off shelling out the £400. In my experience it's easy enough to get curls into your hair, it's keeping them in that's the real problem. From what posters are saying, the Airwrap doesn't seem to have solved this issue.

BillyAndTheSillies · 08/01/2019 22:49

Just redid to see if it worked on dry hair and the curls definitely had more bounce and hold from dry than from wet.
The main thing I was nervous about was where my hair is naturally curly and quite frizzy that the roots would frizz, but a tight roll at the crown seems to avoid this.
U2, was it a particular side that looked more unruly? I can't get the hang of the right side of my head and have to do it without a mirror. Someone mentioned up thread about using the smoothing brush and then the curler, that might help?

missfliss · 09/01/2019 07:55

I have just used mine for the first time and I love it.

I didn't buy it for curls though, I bought it for damage free and super speedy smooth blowdrys.

It did superbly . My medium length fine yet abundant hair with kinks in is beautifully smooth straight and bouncy in under 15 minutes.

Nicer effect than my straighteners and silky soft

amusedbush · 09/01/2019 10:56

How wet was your hair? They say it needs to be 80-90% dry before you start curling it, so almost dry but still cold to the touch. I've seen a few vlogs where people are trying to use hair that is too wet and it doesn't wrap or hold properly.

I have very curly, frizzy hair so I think I'm going to use the firm smoothing brush to sort out my roots and get it mostly dry before curling. My hair is due to be washed tomorrow so I'll let you know how I get on in the morning!

Iooselipssinkships · 09/01/2019 11:20

I was about to get the Babyliss Big Hair but got to page 5 of this thread and decided I definitely need an Airwrap and the hair dryer

Curlypop · 09/01/2019 11:52

I usually use the small barrels as I like the curl but used the large ones last night and wow the volume!!! My hair is so thin unusually. This is incredible!

Curlypop · 09/01/2019 11:59

@Iooselipssinkships I have the big hair and it makes my hair really frizzy

BillyAndTheSillies · 09/01/2019 12:32

Another person who gets frizzy hair from the big hair.

The airwrap is definitely a game changer for me.

U2HasTheEdge · 09/01/2019 13:46

I have watched some tutorials, but need to watch some more. It was both sides I was struggling with but I just need to play with it some more. I am looking forward to trying the straightening brush too. Trying it on my daughter's hair has giving me very high hopes for mine, because hers looked so healthy afterwards.

I hope people are finding that the curls last a long time for them? It seems some people's last and others don't.

ScrambledSmegs · 09/01/2019 15:05

The curls that I have done have lasted almost too well - I like my curls to drop a little and be more like beachy waves. But I was using a Paul Mitchell heat-protecting hairspray beforehand that my hairdresser recommended. Next time I'll use something less bulletproof - or buy the larger curling attachments separately (for 50 quid - ouch!).

U2HasTheEdge · 09/01/2019 20:38

The curls just aren't working for me. I tried again and it curls well but make me looks stupid.

I think it is probably my hair as when I tried again on my dd hers looked lovely. I have super thick hair and a strong kink. It is very frizz prone and lack of volume is never an issue for me. All the curls just make me look like I have even bigger hair and it just looks awful. I tried straightening it first and that didn't help much.

I am on roaccutane and my hair is drying out and it is starting to squeak when I wash it. I am producing no oil in my hair at all any more and the texture seems to be changing. It could be that. I am also due to get my hair thinned out, I have a lot of bulk at the sides that needs taken out.

I am not ready to give up on it yet. My next step is trying the beach wave and then I will try to curl it less close to the root to see if that helps.

U2HasTheEdge · 09/01/2019 20:40

taking*

BifsWif · 09/01/2019 21:10

I was carded today so mine isn’t being redelivered until Friday but I’m expecting not to like the curls straight away - I think i’ll need to either stick with the beach wave or brush the curls out quite a lot. Have you tried doing that to soften them a bit? They can look strange if you’re not used to them.

NyNameIs · 10/01/2019 00:45

I've name changed to show photos.

First pic is half an hour after a cut and blow dry from salon last week. She dries with a round barrel to add volume and then runs ghd through the smooth down and straighten.

Second photo is this afternoon after doing my own hair with the soft smoothing attachment this morning first thing. No product in hair other than a light spritz of hair spray.

It's been my first trip to a salon since getting the airwrap and while I love what my stylist did with my hair, I think it's looks better with the airwrap smoothin brush, it might be me being biased though and justifying price tag haha. It certainly feels better and takes half the time than at the salon, my whole head was done and styled in less than ten mins. The few baby hairs sticking up in second pic is down to wind outside,

My hair actually feels thicker too and I'm seeing less fallout in the plug hole. I don't know if it's down to the airwrap halving the brushing and tugging or if it's just coincidence though.

I'll post curls next.
