To want a Dyson Airwrap

My hair is hideously straight. Poker straight. Not-in-a-good-way straight. Just sodding straight.

I have, over the years, spent much money on heated rollers. I've tried blow-drying with a big metal brush. I've tried every effing thing to get a bit of bounce into my stupid straight hair. My current curling device is Remington straighteners - it's fine for about 25 minutes (so long as there isn't a scrap of moisture in the air) but my hair is snapping off at the ends. It's long - or was, until it started snapping off. FML.

I covet the Dyson Airwrap. I could afford it if I gave up eating for several months, and cut back on several other things. But is it worth it?

This is my curls at end of day, hair was done at ten am after washing in shower and photo taken at midnight. I'd washed with TIGI volumising shampoo. I didnt use conditioner as I find it weighs my fine hair down and I've noticed curls or any style really will drop out much quicker, so I only use conditioner when I'm not styling hair and even then it's the Aussie lightweight spray in one. I'm finding ditching conditioner means I can go longer in-between washes too as it's much less greasy.

I used a pea sized amount of TIGI Curls Rock to lengths only when hair was wet, and then did make up after which point hair was almost dry, I sectioned off and pinned about ten sections up, and started at lower back sections breaking each of the ten sections into about an inch or so, I used full speed and full heat for about ten seconds and then cool shot for ten seconds. I'll touch the curl and turn off when I can feel the cool shot has hit the whole section. Takes me about fifteen mins to curl my whole head from wet to dry. I leave them five mins to fully cool, I might add a light spritz of hair spray and then brush out.

If I want a looser curl ir for them to drop more than they did I'll use larger sections of hair, a bit of ghd curl hold spray on wet hair and a tiny bit of shine serum if it looks frizzy. Sometimes I'll use the larger barrel and no product at all if I just want a bit of bounce.

Wow. Those curls are amazing. Does your hair have any natural curl, MyNameIs? And thanks for the detail. I am definitely going to give one of these a go as soon as QVC have them. John Lewis and Boots are both out of stock now as well. Amazon has one which it claims is really cheap - for £619!!

I used mine for the first time this morning and I LOVE it. This was dried to 80% with the firm smoothing brush, curled with the smaller barrels and then brushed out. I’ll post another photo tonight to see how they drop.

It couldn’t be easier to use and every curl comes out perfectly. It’s so soft too, not burned and crunchy like when I use my GHD tong.

Beautiful hair pics here !

I didn't buy mine for curls but couldn't be happier with the smoothing

HappenstanceMarmite · 10/01/2019 10:12

Boots.com currently have stock of Smooth and Control! I may have tapped the “Buy Now” button in error... 😬

U2HasTheEdge · 10/01/2019 10:13

Wow, the hair pics are gorgeous!

I am going to try again later then I will post pictures so perhaps some of you who are better at doing hair can see what could help me.

BillyAndTheSillies · 10/01/2019 10:58

Loving all these hair pics! I decided to use the volume brush to take out the curls and see if I could restyle without washing and this was my result. Lasted all night and still looks exactly the same this morning.
I'm waiting for some Color Wow to arrive from amazon today.

My hair has zero natural curl, it's thin, floppy and lanky I've spent a fortune on heated rollers and curling wands and various gimmicks and my hair has just never held a curl and I'd struggle using a wand and burn myself so I gave up trying. Took a bit of practise with the airwrap but I love it.

I hope they come in stock soon. I've just had a look on Curry's and Dysons own site and they are all sold out there too. That Amazon price is ridiculous. I've seen a few used ones come up on eBay but I don't think Id buy something so expensive on there as you won't have the protection and be able to return should something go faulty as easily as you would buying normally.

My dd is having her hair trimmed at the salon this afternoon and my hairdresser has asked if I'll take my airwrap so she can have a play with it 😀

Beautiful shiny gorgeous hair billy and amused

Okay, update time: my hair looks very fluffy and has gone quite curly around my hairline - but not in a nice way. It looks quite unkempt, it's not smooth at all and I've had to push it behind my ears to flatten it slightly.

I will persevere though. I think the smaller barrels are too small for the look I want so I'm looking forward to trying the bigger ones, and also wearing it straight with the firm smoothing brush.

Story of my life! I put curls in and they look lovely and smooth and bouncy, but within hours either they're flat or frizzy - and neither is a good look.

Getting curls into the hair is easy. Getting them to stay is not. From what I've read here, the Airwrap doesn't seem to be able to acomplish this much better than the drawer full of styling tools I already have. So won't be splashing out just yet!

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 10/01/2019 22:57

Mine arrived! Grin

With not washed for three days hair.. (been very busy at work all day and night!) I tried to curl it and I already love it Star

missfliss · 11/01/2019 09:12

Second go today and I love 💖 it.

Soft, damage free and smooth.

10 minutes with smoothing brush - i cycle to work so this is after a helmet on for 30 mins and in a lose pony tail ( hence slight kink at ends)

It's a bloody life saver

So how is it performing if you leave leave your hair overnight after using it? Do you have to redo it in the morning? I often wash my hair at night, but I'd love to be able to dry and smooth it at night and then still have it OK in the morning.

I have very thick, naturally curly hair, but it's quite frizzy at times. I wonder if I'd have any of the natural curl after using the smoothing brush, or if I'd have to re-curl it with the barrels?

amusedbush · 11/01/2019 11:38

Last night I got home and my curls looked lovely but the top of my hair was kinky, frizzy and looked terribly unkempt so I'll admit I ran my straighteners over the top couple of inches to smooth it out around my face and hairline Blush

I slept on it and it looks nice today, the curls have fallen into soft waves.

Next time I will use the larger barrels and report back! Hopefully I can master it and eliminate the frizzing up as I looked like fucking Hagrid by yesterday afternoon.

Fashionista101 · 11/01/2019 11:47

You know what the best thing I genuinely think I've ever bought it?

A wand. I bloody love it, it's so good for curling my flat shit straight hair!

BluebellsareBlue · 11/01/2019 11:56

Have a look at some of the you tube reviews of people working this product, it's not great. I have babyliss pro and it's the best thing I have ever purchased for curling my hair

amusedbush · 11/01/2019 13:58

BluebellsareBlue

I've watched pretty much every single youtube review of it and the vast, vast majority are positive. What are you watching?

BifsWif · 11/01/2019 14:08

Me too amused, I haven’t seen any negative reviews?

Mine has arrived! I cannot wait to get home

BillyAndTheSillies · 11/01/2019 14:58

The only negative YouTube video I saw was a woman who had hair down to her waist. She was complaining her hair wasn't being caught, but her sections were about 10cm wide. Even DH kept tutting "she's doing it all wrong".

Today I used the round volume brush and the big barrel tongs. I've got volume, shine and best of all managed to do my fringe!

My hair feels soft and there's been no frizz so far (and it's been nearly 6 months since my last keratin blow dry so by now my hair is a birds nest normally).

Don't think I've ever been so impressed by a hair tool before. Although for curls I'm not managing a hold, a lot of this is to do with my keratin treatments. The hairdresser can't get a curl in mine with a blow dry, and the only thing that holds now is a chopstick curler, which leaves my hair feeling like candy floss.

LadyHooHa · 11/01/2019 15:10

Still watching QVC...

Curled mine with the straighteners again today, and was treated to the smell of frying hair. This alone was almost enough to make me cave in, even without a monthly repayment scheme.

I end up curling mine at least twice a day, normally - I take the straighteners to work, and sometimes have to curl it when I get there because even 5 mins in anything like damp weather immediately straightens it. Ugh.

DD once did mine with her chopstick thing. The curls did hold, but it's Billy's mention of candy floss that has reminded me of this event.

I'm saying this from the position of a salon owner. Having researched this quite thoroughly before making a big purchase for the salon, this has weak curls that fall out quickly and the length of time it takes is extremely long.

If you have shoulder length hair with a bit of a wave I think this would be ok but having watched many of the videos I think a cheaper purchase of the babyliss pro or even a wand would be better.

Disclaimer- I have only seen this in action twice in the flesh so to speak and the two hairdressers were not too impressed.

I'm of course only giving my view

LadyHooHa · 11/01/2019 15:21

Thanks, Bluebells - good to hear a professional speaking! How hot does the Babyliss Pro get? (in other words, will it fry my hair, which is already in very poor condition at the ends, despite having had 3" cut off it last week...)?

OP posts:
BluebellsareBlue · 11/01/2019 15:58

It gets hot! As it pulls the hair in itself you have to make sure your ends are straight. I'm not saying this is the best product for your hair (mine sounds like it the same as yours, I'm over processed and heat damaged. But it will hold a curl. I have a slight wave in mine but I straighten it then curl with the babyliss, not recommended as double damaging the hair, but the curls are smooth and as tight or loose as you like depending on what size of section you are taking.

BluebellsareBlue · 11/01/2019 16:00

Is there a returns policy on the airwave? If there is and it's no quibble, I would try it for the 30 days or what ever and if no use send it back. Have you thought of (now I'm showing my age) a Demi wave perm to give your hair some body? The cheaper options may work better?

haggisaggis · 11/01/2019 16:15

Is the Babyliss Pro the thing that pulls hair in and winds it round by itself? We got dd (very long hair) this for Christmas. First time she used it, it pulled her hair in tight and wouldn't release. A complete nightmare trying to detangle it! We're too scared to try again. She has a Dyson hairdryer already so am considering the airwrap for her next Christmas.
