Aibu about parking & new neighbours

Parkingshmarking · 29/12/2018 03:57

Nc for this. Newish neighbours in house opposite ours. The have a driveway with room for 2 cars, mine only has room for 1. Ds1 home from Uni for Christmas & his car is parked on the street outside our house, opposite theirs. Also Ds2 girlfriend here sometimes & her car also parked on the street outside. Notes were left on both cars last week by neighbours saying 'do not park outside our house'. Yesterday Ds1 had friends over so his car + 2 others parked on street. When I left hot work at 4pm neighbour was outside waiting for me, cue rant about cars & how I'm being 'disrespectful' not telling my son & any visitors not to park there. Felt very intimidated & was actually dreading coming home from work last night in case he was waiting for me. Having a tough time generally atm & feeling a bit emotional & vulnerable. Moved here a few years ago to escape a violent ex-p & just want to live a quiet life & not feel intimidated or worried to leave my home. Aibu?

SoupDragon · 31/12/2018 11:43

You seem to be confusing illegal parking with "best practise" advisory rules.

EffOrf · 31/12/2018 11:47

This is what happens when someone copies and pastes stuff without actually reading that it makes sense.

Obviously it is best practice to lock your car door as the insurance may not pay out if it is stolen, but it is not illegal, likewise making sure that valuables are out of sight.

lauramaywharton · 31/12/2018 11:47

If you look it says these can land you with a fine and/or points on to ur licence. Like I said most should be common sence though right?

SoupDragon · 31/12/2018 11:48

That RAC list of where you can not park isn't the same as you posted.

EffOrf · 31/12/2018 11:57

Chunks of that long list have been copied and pasted from various places with a sweeping statement of "All these can get you a £50-£70 fine plus points on your licence" added to the bottom when some of it is just stuff which is advised by the Highway Code.

myrtleWilson · 31/12/2018 12:03

No laura it says the Highway Code isn't itself the law but that some of its regulations have become laws through the Road Traffic Act and you could be prosecuted (and get a fine/points) if you are in contravention of the RTA. It then goes on to list what the HC says about parking but doesn't claim those regulations to be legal requirements

SoupDragon · 31/12/2018 12:04

what is that meant to show? Your list is wrong, no debate. Do you really think you get points and a fine for leaving valuables on view? Seriously?

swingofthings · 31/12/2018 12:09

So what is Op supposed to do? Have NO visitors over Xmas?
Well from the diagram shared it would appear that the visitor are opting to park right in front of OP's House which inconvenience the neighbour rather than parking in front of her parked car, which would then make it OK for the neighbour but would mean inconvenience OP's son to move his car if OP needing to get out of her drive.

So it sounds like it's a case of 'let's inconvenience the neighbour rather than inconvenience us'

EffOrf · 31/12/2018 12:11

Valuables should be out of sight and the car locked

Note the word is should not must as explained in the link from the Sun

EffOrf · 31/12/2018 12:15

OP's visitors are entitled to park exactly where they want as long as it is legal and of course they make sure their car is locked and valuables out of sight Grin

lauramaywharton · 31/12/2018 13:19

Look I'm done trying to educate you all now do as you please all drivers do anyway. Most drivers don't even know who has the right of way on a slip lane let alone parking lol 😂 these things should be in a theory test not silly questions about trams and bikes.

SoupDragon · 31/12/2018 14:59

Look I'm done trying to educate you all

Thank goodness for that given you don't understand the difference between what is law and what isn't.

HauntedPencil · 31/12/2018 15:42

What's wrong with people why could he not just politely ask? Urgh.

It sounds like it might be better for him if they parked outside his house over the road from yours, but leaving shitty notes and being a wanker is hardly the way to go about it.

We have a narrow street which can be accessed 2 sides and occasionally I have to loop around to go on the drive a different way, it's hardly the end of the world.

FartingInTheFence · 31/12/2018 16:12

@Parkingshmarking

Your neighbour is a complete and utter cunt. And anyone who disagrees with you is too.

You/son have done nothing wrong and neighbourcunt doesnt own the road. If he cant park, he should not be driving. Report him for drink driving and see how he likes that.

TheRealJoseph · 31/12/2018 18:44

Hmm idiot!

smilingontheinside · 31/12/2018 18:45

He should live in my road. Old not particularly wide. Neighbour never parks on his drive/double garage which is athe bottom of his garden but parks directly opposite our drive which we park all 3 cars on. Neighbour next door but one our side had party Xmas eve loads cars parked in road one either side of our drive and lazy neighbour opposite parked his opposite our drive as usual so very difficult to get into our drive. We sucked it up because apart from knob neighbour opposite usually no problemsuch. That said the one time my oh left his mid life crisis car on road outside our house son of neighbour 3 doors down knocked and asked me to move it so he could park works van there as his mother didn't want it outside her house Shock

Pissedoffdotcom · 31/12/2018 18:54

Tell him to piss off. Nothing wrong with the parking in your diagram. If he can't get in or out he needs to take some refresher lessons ffs.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 31/12/2018 19:13

Lauramay quite frankly your talking out your arse and none of what you've posted is remotely relatable to the OP, also please go and educate yourself on laws and highway codes

You said there was laws in force, then back tracked out your arse to say their was talks... however cannot give a single link to your hypothetical "laws"

My dh best friends is a consultant for the Highway agency and also does consultant work for the DVLA , he has no idea what your talking about either Confused

OP glad you stood your ground, and remember your not parking outside of his house, your parking perfectly legal outside of yours.

DH friend does say to watch the speed bump, as if someone was speeding and didn't see the bump your cars would directly be the impact zone... (don't ask me how tho 😂)

OldPosterNewUsername · 31/12/2018 19:22

Imagine the same situation but all of the houses have a restrictive covenant stating that no body is to park on the road.

All the home owners obey it but the private tenants don't making it extremely hard if not (sometimes) impossible to use your own driveway.

mathsquestions · 31/12/2018 19:30

Tell him “on yer bike” if he persists tell him you feel threatened and if he continues you will need to call the police. #endof

The idiots in my street do the same. We are the only family in the area with ONE car and no safe parking outside our house (or driveway) so we always need to park outside someone else's. One even physically threatened my husband and threatened to damage the car. When we called the police they said 'just don't park there!'. It's perfectly legal to park where you like but sometimes it's not worth the hassle. You could get a hidden camera CCTV up and point it at your car and if they damage it take the evidence to the police. Otherwise just find a more understanding neighbour and park outside their house.
