To ask religious MIL to respect our views?

Namedilema123 · 28/12/2018 16:14

PIL are Christians. DH is atheist. Im not atheist but not religious at all and find it all a bit culty.

MIL is always talking about Jesus and God to my 4yo and 2yo. She plays religious nursery rhymes when she looks after them. For Christmas has bought them a Childs First Bible and Child's First Prayer Book. How do i broach this subject? It makes me feel so uncomfortable. Its not so much the religion itself but more it being taught as blind fact, rather than just stories or that some people believe it, others don't. would be much happier if other religions were spoken about too. Or AIBU?

Putting words in my mouth - MN is so good at this. We're not discussing philosophy, we're discussing religion. Or at least I am.

And I don't give a shiny shit about shops being closed two days a year. That was a government decision, by the way.

Coyoacan · 01/01/2019 20:04

It’s not either/or. Politics and philosophy are essential too. Try reading the Metaphysical Poets without a basic understanding of Christianity

Greek mythology and the Arthurian tales are also helpful.

Elphame · 01/01/2019 20:14

@Bluelady

Yes indeed it was a Govt decision - at the instigation of the bishops in the House of Lords. A perfect example of how Christianity imposing its beliefs on the rest of us :)

Bluelady · 01/01/2019 20:30

It's not imposing anything on me because I don't give a damn.

PoutySprout · 01/01/2019 20:34

Wow.

DioneTheDiabolist · 01/01/2019 20:40

Supermarkets being closed for 2 whole days a year.Shock Oh the inhumanity of such oppression! Something needs to be done! Does Amnesty know about this?

Bechetdiagnosed · 01/01/2019 20:46

Another one here who does not give a damn!

Amnesty Grin

PoutySprout · 01/01/2019 21:22

Supermarkets being closed for 2 whole days a year.

Plus very limited opening hours everywhere except Scotland on all normal sundays.

Bluelady · 01/01/2019 21:42

Because 150 hours a week to spend money in a bricks and mortar shop isn't enough for anyone.

PoutySprout · 01/01/2019 23:22

Hardly the point. Why not restrict hours on a different day each week?

BertrandRussell · 01/01/2019 23:30

The point is not how much hours are restricted. The point is that they are restricted in a way that suits Christians and because of the Christian lobby. A clear example of the Christian privilege that appsrantky does not exist.

DeepanKrispanEven · 02/01/2019 00:00

Whatever, who the fuck cares

Apparently you do, onlyindreams, since you posted twice about it.

And fwiw replies on here are often hours apart because believe it or not some of us have other things going on.

The point is that your post moaned about Bertrand wanting to have the last word, when she hadn't posted for several hours and there were a number of posts after hers.

As far as I know the post that had been aimed at me was equally hours after mine so obviously it is a common thing.

But that post wasn't moaning about you wanting to have the last word.

Who on earth checks on people like that.

I just thought it was a very odd thing to say when blatantly Bertrand hadn't had the last word, and you can't have thought she had given the time-lapse and the existence of other posts. It takes all of 10 seconds to check out the timings.

Bluelady · 02/01/2019 00:01

Been at the sherry, @BertrandRussell? 😉

If the hours we can't go shopping is all you guys have got this has all got a bit pointless.

BertrandRussell · 02/01/2019 00:06

“If the hours we can't go shopping is all you guys have got this has all got a bit pointless.“

Well, as you have already said that you don’t care about the blatant unfairness of the schools admissions system you can hardly be expected to understand a point of principle.....

PoutySprout · 02/01/2019 00:10

All we’ve got?

How about being told I can’t work on bank holidays, the majority of which are linked to festivals I don’t acknowledge/celebrate?

How about the only options for my DD not having to take an active part in worshiping a deity we don’t acknowledge being withdrawing her from school activities or homeschooling?

Even the financial year is set because of Christianity FFS.

Some of it is a legacy. Some of it is outdated and needs revising. We should be a secular society. People have the freedom to believe in and worship whatever they like (or nothing) - why can’t it be in their time?

Bluelady · 02/01/2019 00:15

I understand a point of principle as well as you do (as you very well know). Our points of principle are different is all.

Bechetdiagnosed · 02/01/2019 07:03

Emigrate then.

Bye Hmm

Vitalogy · 02/01/2019 07:17

Oh it's just getting daft now, as per. People just want an even playing field especially when it comes to schooling.

BertrandRussell · 02/01/2019 08:22

Bluelady- you obviously don’t understand what a “point of principle” is, or you wouldn’t be going on about the number of shopping days as if that’s the point.

Bluelady · 02/01/2019 08:57

Come on, you can patronise other people and get away with it but not me. Like I said, my points of principle are different to yours which is why I'm taking the piss. You obviously can't get your head round people having different opinions to yours. I'd have thought you'd have got used to it by now.

DeepanKrispanEven · 02/01/2019 09:03

It's not just a matter of different opinions, though, is it, Bluelady? There is an important issue around the fact that one religion in particular governs important decisions as to how businesses are run, and also is allowed to exclude non-members of that religion from state funded schools. If anyone thinks that's OK and doesn't represent Christian privilege, it's reasonable to ask them why. Dismissing the question with a suggestion that it's trivial doesn't cut it.

Bluelady · 02/01/2019 09:08

I'm done here. It's going round in never ending circles and I'm sick of arguing about something I don't give a shit about. Life's too short.

BertrandRussell · 02/01/2019 09:11

Different opinions-fine.
Different facts? Not so much.

speakout · 02/01/2019 09:24

Chrisianity affects so many aspects of our society that we take as normal.

Women's place at work, legislation governing medical reseach, our political system, the male dominatin of finance, education, law.

Christianity means we have no non faith schools. It demands that our children are subject to some christian indoctrination- which ensures they will continue their power sysytems into the next generation.

The greasy tendrils of christianity infiltrate every aspect of our society and have ensured that women are confined to a second class role.

This is not just about Sunday trading laws- although a decent example.

I rejoice to see Christianity dwindle.

PoutySprout · 02/01/2019 09:27

Not where it really matters though. Look at all the alleged Christians and catholics in the current Cabinet making decisions ensuring the poorest in society remain poor!
