To ask religious MIL to respect our views?

PIL are Christians. DH is atheist. Im not atheist but not religious at all and find it all a bit culty.

MIL is always talking about Jesus and God to my 4yo and 2yo. She plays religious nursery rhymes when she looks after them. For Christmas has bought them a Childs First Bible and Child's First Prayer Book. How do i broach this subject? It makes me feel so uncomfortable. Its not so much the religion itself but more it being taught as blind fact, rather than just stories or that some people believe it, others don't. would be much happier if other religions were spoken about too. Or AIBU?

Weird thing to post, onlyindreams, particularly a full 13 hours since Bertrand last posted on this thread.

Where do you get 13 hours from? it was exactly 5 minutes. Confused
The only thing weird was you posting this. Confused

MsChookandtheelvesofFahFah · 01/01/2019 12:16

Lol it was 13 hours our time, 5 minutes Narnia timeWink

PoutySprout · 01/01/2019 12:16

Bertrand posted at 09:16

You posted at 22:21.

Are you actually on a different planet where time passes differently?

Canibuildasnowman · 01/01/2019 12:33

We’re not believers but DCs have a kids bible. The stories are part of our culture so I think they should know them - plus they’re great stories some of them! But DCs know they are just stories. Just tell your D.C. that grandma believes and you don’t.

Craft1905 · 01/01/2019 13:30

Never met an over zealous atheist. What do they do?

They let off bombs whilst shouting "god is not real".

They knock on your door at inconvenient times and peddle Richard Dawkins books.

They stand in the street with a megaphone shouting "the end of the world is about 5 billion years away which is when the sun runs out of fuel."

They set up atheist schools which favour the kids of non believers.

They are ruining the world I tells ya.

onlyindreams · 01/01/2019 17:09

Whatever, who the fuck cares.

PoutySprout · 01/01/2019 17:10

Have you considered standing for Government?

Your debating skills are exceptional.

onlyindreams · 01/01/2019 17:14

And fwiw replies on here are often hours apart because believe it or not some of us have other things going on. As far as I know the post that had been aimed at me was equally hours after mine so obviously it is a common thing. Is that equally "weird"?

onlyindreams · 01/01/2019 17:16

Poutysprout sometimes it's the most apt response when dealing with people who are nitpicking.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 01/01/2019 17:18

Not RTFT

Interestikng that first 50 or so responses were mainly what's teh problem

I wonder if it were reversed and an athest GP of a religious family came around took the kids to one side and told the god isn't real, the bible is made up stories that have evolved over time, religion generally exists to control people etc

My sense is that shoe on the other foot, most "what's the harm" posters would see it as a problem.

Because for some reason following an orgnaised religion trumps not.
Sam doesn't seem to apply for smaller groups or more individual belief systems which lots of people, again, feel free to look down on / sneer at / take the piss out of.

I suppose the power of the large established wealthy religions - Christinaity of various miansteam flavours being the dominant in the UK - still persists.

DioneTheDiabolist · 01/01/2019 17:29

Never met an over zealous atheist. What do they do?
Bang on about how religious people are stupid, blame them for all the world's ills and some attack clergy members (according to a recent article in The Times). And love to portray themselves as the Most Oppressed People Ever.

ExH was an over zealous atheist. It was one of his fixations when he was suffering a complete breakdown in his MH.Sad

PoutySprout · 01/01/2019 17:37

You were asked why you responded 13 hours later regarding “having the last word”. You said it was 5 minutes. Date stamps on posts show 13 hours.

You’ve been caught out but others are nitpicking. 😂😂😂😂😂

onlyindreams · 01/01/2019 18:03

Yes it is nitpicking, i thought it was 5 minutes because guess what it’s Christmas, i was celebrating. What on earth do you mean “caught out”.Who on earth checks on people like that. The post aimed at me was afaik a long time after my post. The difference being, i didn’t bother mentioning it, just the bit about “not letting things go”. Please just let it go now, it’s tiresome.

PoutySprout · 01/01/2019 18:14

Shit. I’ve just told my DD that dinner will be ready in 5 mins forgetting that it’s xmas and time therefore passes 260 times slower.

She can have it for breakfast instead. Wink

onlyindreams · 01/01/2019 18:21

Right ive just checked back on the relevant posts. I was accused of making a post which was “weird” because it was hours later. The post that Bertrand had sent to me was at 09.15 on monday, in response to my post which was at 23.14 Sunday. Hence my comment about not letting something go. So why is it ok for one to post hours later and not someone else? Confused

IAmAlwaysLikeThis · 01/01/2019 18:24

only weren’t you just telling others to let it go?

Or did you say that in the future and your timeline hasn’t aligned with mine yet?

Craft1905 · 01/01/2019 18:24

Typical of the god squad. Even when the evidence that they are wrong is put in front of their nose, it's nitpicking/I've got an excuse/ who cares about facts/let it go, it's not important. Grin

onlyindreams · 01/01/2019 18:28

poutysprout perhaps spend less time on here making yourself look foolish about something that was none of your concern and concentrate on your dinner instead, and btw you’ve purposely misunderstood the relevence of my Christmas comment.

IAmAlwaysLikeThis · 01/01/2019 18:29

only but how much less time? Five minutes? Or 20 hours? Or are those the same thing??

onlyindreams · 01/01/2019 18:33

No why should i let something go when i’ve just proved i was right......and what evidence are you on about. I have proved i was right all along ffs.

onlyindreams · 01/01/2019 18:42

How typical, ive proved i was right all along but no acknowledgement or apology. Check the posts, the proof is there, typical atheist trick when they’ve been proved wrong. Anyway it seems everyone wants to pile in now, another typical atheist ploy. So nasty as usual. Byee.

Craft1905 · 01/01/2019 18:43

Indeed...wrong is the new right. Grin

BertrandRussell · 01/01/2019 18:45

“I'm kind of mystified why religion is considered so vital to understanding art and literature though, when philosophy isn't. I'll add try reading Animal Farm without a basic knowledge of Marxism to my list.”

It’s not either/or. Politics and philosophy are essential too. Try reading the Metaphysical
Poets without a basic understanding of Christianity.

TaMereAPoilDevantPrisu · 01/01/2019 18:48

I was responding to bluelady who seems to think there's no philosophical influence in art and literature.

Elphame · 01/01/2019 18:57

@Bluelady

"Christians in the UK most certainly don't attempt to impose their beliefs on me "

Of course they do - why do you think supermarkets and garden centres are banned from opening on Easter Sunday? Bishops are entitled to sit in our legislature and have an influence on our legal system. No other religious representatives have that right.
