To ask what you did with your wedding dress?

My wedding dress is just sat in my spare bedroom and it feels so wasteful. (It’s lovely - if I do say so myself and was expensive!)

But I’m not sure what to do with it? What did you do with your wedding dress?

Any ideas?

I'm planning on getting mine made into a skirt when I'm not hugely pregnant anymore! It wasn't a very traditional dress so I'll be able to wear the skirt on the rare occasions we go anywhere fancy!

RussellSprout · 29/12/2018 13:33

I had mine made into a cushion! That way I can look at it every day.. I had a very elaborate dress with lots of beading though.. may not work for simpler styles.

Fink · 29/12/2018 14:23

At the risk of outing myself:

a family member made the train into a baptism gown for dc;

the bodice and top of the skirt was made into a first communion dress for dc;

the rest of the skirt was made into a skirt for me. It's lovely and I can wear it for special occasions without looking like I'm wearing a wedding dress.

It wasn't a huge dress to start with, but the baptism gown hardly took any material (because, you know, babies are small).

The quote to have my old wedding dress cleaned back in the day was an eye-watering £200. But it would only have been worth that 2nd hand, so instead it sits mouldering away in my mil's wardrobe.. My dc are going to cut bits off when their time comes & add it to their dresses.

Notapantodame · 29/12/2018 15:32

We were going to dye it hot pink & then let the oldest dc wear it for her 18th & 'trash-the-dress' only it wasn't remotely going to fit, so that idea got shelved. Xmas Grin

I still have mine from 1993....very dated now. Very princess Diana with big shoulders but I get it out of the loft pretty often! I’ve done everything in it from gritting the drive to ironing in it, taking the recycling out in it, empty the dishwasher.....The neighbours know I’m mad, as do the kids. I wore it watching both recent royal weddings and even got my BIL to climb in the loft (half bladdered) when we had big party at ours for DHs 50th this year so I could ‘appear’ in it Grin. Yes I’m crazy but I love my dress. It only cost £350 and I have definitely had my moneys worth out of it!!! The whole family just shake their head and go ‘here she goes again....’

Gift of a wedding. They're a charity that gives wedding items to the terminally ill.

GinTimeAtHome · 29/12/2018 16:13

Mine in a vacuum pack in the wardrobe Blush not the best way to keep it but for some reason I can’t part with it!

I loved my dress I may go and get it out and have a quick look - not that it would fit me now

TrainsandDiggers · 29/12/2018 17:10

I made mine into a christening gown for my children

OnlineAlienator · 29/12/2018 17:15

I made mine so im keeping it. Maybe DD will wear it? unlikely

Topseyt · 29/12/2018 17:54

My mother made my wedding dress. I loved it and still have it packed away in tissue paper in a box in my wardrobe.

I've been married 25 years. It has been in the box for about that long too. I have no idea what state it would be in now, but I will never be able to bring myself to part with it. Sentimental value really.

PixieBob28 · 29/12/2018 18:29

Was going to make it into a Christening dress for my baby but found out I was having a boy (only having the one child) and thought against it, so sold it on Facebook to a lovely lady instead and put the money towards things for my little boy. Bought dress for £770 sold it for £250. Better than nothing!

NotTheQueen · 29/12/2018 21:21

Mines hanging in the wardrobe, but it wasn’t terribly expensive as I brought it in a store in my husband’s country then minor alterations. I’m waiting for one of the stillborn charities to be accepting dresses again as my friends eldest child was born sleeping.
DDIJ I’m really sorry that you got harassed by charities via PM, that’s awful and really tactless of them. I hope they have changed their approach

Frogletmamma · 30/12/2018 05:12

Mines in the back of the wardrobe. Had a slightly crazy wedding so it's covered in grass, red wine and puzzling stains. Makes me laugh every time I see what the virginal white has turned into
Even the third world wouldntneantnit.

Frogletmamma · 30/12/2018 05:13

Wouldn't want it sorry

Claudia1980 · 30/12/2018 05:35

In the dress up box for the kids. They loooooove it!

pineapplebryanbrown · 30/12/2018 17:11

Mine from 1990 (got divorced in 92) is still in Mum's wardrobe. It's a lovely dress, tea length and dropped waist, very 1920s. I'm not sentimental about it but someone wanted it for fancy dress and I thought - nah.

pineapplebryanbrown · 30/12/2018 17:14

frocksnogandbusters really? Sorry, that's bonkers!

Angelil · 30/12/2018 19:34

I got married 7 years ago and would happily sell it; it's a beautiful dress that deserves to be worn again.
However, people seem to be utterly blind to the craftsmanship and don't even want to pay the 1/6 of what it cost that someone quoted here. It's true it wasn't cheap to begin with but it was also already discounted even when I bought it and people don't even want to pay a small fraction of that.
So I'm still working out what to do with it. We already have a family christening gown so it doesn't make sense to turn my wedding dress into another.

Jackyjill6 · 30/12/2018 20:59

I didn't have a traditional dress as I had a very informal wedding. If I had, I think I would have donated it to a charity shop close to my heart.

frocksnogandbusters · 30/12/2018 21:29

thighs ....yep, I know! No word of a lie.... they all know I’m bonkers anyway! I find it hilarious when I get it out. Happy memories just keep on coming Grin

Time40 · 30/12/2018 22:03

I've seen another charity who remake them into little nighties for still born babies

I find that really, really, seriously depressing. I'd hate to think of my dress ending up as one of those.

And to the pp who said that wedding dresses don't sell - yes they do. If it's the right sort of dress, it can sell easily and for a good price.

WidoWanky · 30/12/2018 22:11

Hired mine, so it went back the next day.

My mum's was in the dressing up box when we were kids, along with loads of other 60's / 70's monstrosities!

LuluJakey1 · 30/12/2018 22:28

I love mine. My best friend - who can sew anything- made it to a design I had seen from a huge old piece of lace I bought at a street market in France. We had to hot wash it several times and treat it to get the colour back to the sort of creamy colour it had originally been. It is a very simple style - no flounces or underskirts- and I just love it. It is in a dress carrier in a spare bedroom wardrobe. I keep thinking DD might love it but probably not. I don't think anyone would buy it, it has no designer or maker label. I could make something with it myself these days but don't really want to chop it up. DH said he would be really upset if I got rid of it. But is it just going to hang in a wardrobe until we die and then get chucked out? I think it could make a really pretty blind for a bathroom or study. It isn't suitable for the still born baby charity.
I could wear it again if I was brave enough- to a summer party with sandals and if I dressed it down but I am not brave enough incase anyone realised what it was. It seems a bit odd to wear a wedding dress to a party.

TheTruthBeTold · 30/12/2018 22:48

How long has it been since your wedding? I'm keeping my wedding dress and plan to do a photo shoot with me and my DH a year or so from the date we got married, mainly because I didn't like many of the photos from our wedding and it'd be nice to have a more relaxed occasion to enjoy and wear my dress again when not as stressed Smile
