To ask what you did with your wedding dress?

My wedding dress is just sat in my spare bedroom and it feels so wasteful. (It’s lovely - if I do say so myself and was expensive!)

But I’m not sure what to do with it? What did you do with your wedding dress?

Any ideas?

It’s in a bin bag in the loft
Divorced from the groom so don’t know why I still have it

LadyinLavende · 28/12/2018 13:35

Mine was made by a seamstress so after the wedding I asked her to remodel the long skirt to calf length and I do wear it occasionally (despite it clearly being a wedding dress) - generally as fancy dress: I wore it to a party for William and Catherine's wedding - in a more modest way it is not dissimlar to her dress... most recently I wore it at the party for our Pearl Wedding Anniversary, to the delight of all the little girls who love to see a proper "princess dress".

Jaxhog · 28/12/2018 13:36

I hired mine. When else would I be likely to wear it?

QuietlyPondering · 28/12/2018 13:43

I sold mine. The lady who bought it from me came to try it on and it was comforting to know it was going to be used again. I was so happy wearing it on my wedding day, it was lovely to know it would give another bride the same feeling. Otherwise it would have lived in my loft forever!

minipie · 28/12/2018 13:51

Still have mine. Like a couple of PPs the overskirt got damaged dancing, and I’m short so it can’t really be shortened further.

I’d happily give it to a stillbirth charity but last time I looked they all said they had enough gowns. Will look again.

I’ve also thought about chopping it off short and letting the DDs play dressing up in it - but it’s strapless so would probably fall off them.

CitrusFruit9 · 28/12/2018 13:55

Burnt it along with all our photos after finding exH had cheated on me throughout our 20+ year marriage. Felt quite cathartic at the time though I'd probably take the charity shop option if I had my time again.

Rachelle3211 · 28/12/2018 13:55

I wear mine at Halloween on occasion. I love it. Will never get rid of it.

I’m finding this thread very interesting. I wasn’t expecting such a variety of responses!

Mine was an eBay purchase and I both ripped and got grass stains on the very bottom of the dress (floor length, reception outdoors, put my heel through it). I tried to get it dry cleaned afterwards but it can't be dry cleaned. It's hanging about pointlessly somewhere in the house, I forget where.

DD likes the shoes but they're very high and the heel of one is also stained. Her feet are now bigger than mine anyway! I really should throw it all out!

Thisisnotadriveby · 28/12/2018 14:11

If I had the room (ad money) I would get mine framed... A company called Thebeautifulframecompany does a marvellous job. Bit expensive and grand for me at the point in time but that is what I would love to do!

It wasn’t even an expensive dress but I am absolutely besotted with it and it brings me such joy thinking about it!

themagicamulet · 28/12/2018 14:16

Hanging in the wardrobe in the spare room in the bag it came back from the dry cleaner's in. We had quite a casual wedding so it's strapless (not long) in very plain duchess satin so hasn't really dated and hoping my dd might be interested when the time comes. Have kept the shoes too.

NotUsedBySomeoneElse · 28/12/2018 14:22

I paid for the dry cleaning service Asda have, where they put it in a display box afterwards. It’s just sat on top of my wardrobe. I don’t think I could easily sell or donate it since it was heavily altered for my shape so anyone buying it would need to work on it too. Not sure I want to get rid of it anyway, although I’m not sure what to do with it in the long run.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 28/12/2018 14:27

Divorced here but the dress went in the bin years before.

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 28/12/2018 14:31

Mine was a giant meringue (totally of its time). Not suitable for repurposing. It sat, scrunched up in a dress bag in the spare bedroom wardrobe for years. Then we redid the house and it got put in the skip. Not really ideal.

Thewifipasswordis · 28/12/2018 14:34

I donated it a charity who transforms them into beautiful clothes for stillborn and premature babies who sadly pass away.

BoswellandForshort · 28/12/2018 14:41

I don’t know where mine is, but then it was only a cheap casual thing that you could have worn anywhere. I did wear it once more to a party but I’m not sure where I put it after that.

My grandma kept hers all her life but in the 60s she cut out the underskirt to make an angel costume for my aunt’s nativity performance. I thought that was cute.

Jennyw12 · 28/12/2018 14:43

Mine is still in the wardrobe but I love Rachelle's idea of wearing it to a fancy dress party. Well done on being able to get into it. I have a party next week but I'm fairly sure I can't fit into the dress these days

Redtartanshoes · 28/12/2018 14:46

I think you could get a good semesters to detach the bodice from the skirt, dye it and then you’d probably be able to wear again?

tryinganewname · 28/12/2018 14:47

Sold mine on Preloved, it took about 6 months to sell though, it's not easy.

Clarich007 · 28/12/2018 14:47

I've still got mine, got married in 1975 !!

MorningsEleven · 28/12/2018 14:50

Mine is still in the wardrobe 26 years on. It needs to go to the charity shop.

EugenesAxe · 28/12/2018 14:50

Kept it. There’s a growing fashion for churches to have flower/wedding festivals, and then it’s interesting to see dress fashions through the ages. If you’d like the cash though, sell it.

MorningsEleven · 28/12/2018 14:50
  1. Not 26.
DogMamma · 28/12/2018 14:55

Mine was a really simple ivory cowl neck cap sleeve dress by ghost, bought from John Lewis, it was 220 quid, I sent it away to be professional dyed a deep blue ish purple Colour and I've worn it 5 times since I got married ..... to 3 weddings once as a bridesmaid dress with all 3 brides consent and to two formal christmas dinners/parties

Runwayqueen · 28/12/2018 15:07

I gave mine to the amateur theatre company I belonged to. It's been used a few times in various shows. I didn't want to keep it as we divorced
