To ask for the funniest stealth boasts you've seen on social media

GunpowderGelatine · 27/12/2018 00:11

My real life recent examples:

"About to hang up our Christmas cards onto the wall and gutted to find our stapler is crap, doesn't staple anything, argh!"

Stealth boast translation: look how popular we are

"I'm so sick of getting asked for ID, I just want to buy my gin without ratching for my drivers license, I'm 35 and a mother of three for goodness sake"

Stealth blast translation: I'm soooo young looking

"Wow Holly got a Nintendo Switch for Christmas! 😱😁"

Stealth boast translation: we got her the Nintendo Switch, so we aren't thanking anyone but just want to show you all what good parents we are

I am not on any social media bar MN so do not see these posts but some of the examples here are just fine imo. I guess that insecure people will stealth boast occasionally and equally insecure people will get riled by this and start threads like this one.

It all seems a bit pointless to me. Confused

Jaxhog · 27/12/2018 11:41

I am not filled with joy when I see an acquaintance's child doing well

Now that is truly sad. And rather mean.

papayasareyum · 27/12/2018 11:44

the ones that make me laugh are the panoramic or weirdly angled photos of dining rooms dressed like something out of a Vogue spread. The specific purpose is to show you how amazing their interior design is.

papayasareyum · 27/12/2018 11:46

or a “selfie” of their Christmas lights, showing the entire house with the brand new Audi on the driveway

RoboticSealpup · 27/12/2018 11:49

FB friend once posted a picture of a Christmas card her child had drawn for their cleaner, ostensibly in reference to the kindness and artistic skill of the child.

I have a cleaner too, but I don't tell people about it.

starcrossedseahorse · 27/12/2018 11:51

Jeez people - you really DO sound consumed with envy. Sad

papayasareyum · 27/12/2018 11:52

I’ve noticed a shift in the way people show off their gifts in the past few years though. A few years ago there were loads of photos on my friends pages over Xmas of neatly organised piles of expensive Xmas gifts. (which their partners had given them) I haven’t seen these posts for the last couple of years.

starcrossedseahorse · 27/12/2018 11:52

Hahahahaha!
A MN classic if ever I saw one!

papayasareyum · 27/12/2018 11:53

not consumed with envy. I could post photos of the expensive gifts, the beautifully decorated table, the new car...but it’s a bit crass, so I don’t

ThistleAmore · 27/12/2018 11:54

The ones that baffle me are those posts wishing a small child a happy birthday when child is clearly too young to have an FB/Insta account and will therefore never see it (even if they're capable of reading, which in eight out of ten instances, they're not).

It's basically like-farming/'look what an amazing parent I am for remembering my child's birthday'.

GenerationSnowflake · 27/12/2018 11:56

I have a cleaner too, but I don't tell people about it.

I didn't realise having a cleaner was something people thought was worth of brag! How do you stand on central heating and running water then?

jewllerybox · 27/12/2018 11:57

WhyDontYouComeOnOver I'm in bed feeling shit with a chest infection. This post is quite cheering me up. Do you not have a sense of humour? None of us know the people involved - we are not slagging anyone directly.

ThistleAmore · 27/12/2018 11:57

The ones with the photos of the graduation ceremonies, class of degree included.

This is about as far away from stealth boasting as possible: I'd say it's one of the very few genuine achievements that is worthy of sharing on SM.

HexagonalBattenburg · 27/12/2018 11:59

For multiple Alexa families - remember there's always the option to really piss off your family members by telling it to "Alexa play Baby Shark on teenage child's room" and make music randomly come out of the speaker in their bedroom. Added bonus points if you can do it when they've got friends around for maximum embarrassment value.

Klobuchar · 27/12/2018 11:59

Not a stealth boast but I’m a manager of plenty of people who could say “my team”. Most don’t and I never do either. Teams are meant to be just that.

Subtlecheese · 27/12/2018 12:00

The person moaning about graduation pictures is doing the PA thing of wanting to imply that a degree is nothing to be proud of, once asked about it I tend to find these are those that wants everyone to know they would only post once their dear darlings have something of at least phd status, probably greater. A Nobel prize and they might actually bother taking a picture Grin

merrybloominchristmas · 27/12/2018 12:01

This thread is one of the most mean spirited things i have ever read.

ThistleAmore · 27/12/2018 12:02

Some veer towards "love my life". They work hard and play hard. I have a mystery A&E check-in "whats up hun?" "I'll pm you hun" type. She's a relative and has always gone for a dramatic approach to life.

Huns are my absolute FAVOURITE class of FBers.

I've only got one ATM and she's a bit of a second-class hun (frequently tells you the reason why she's in A&E and never even tries to push MLM guff Sad), but if anybody has any that they'd like shifted (huns don't care if they know you or not, they just like an audience for their hunnery), please do share. Grin

I think we all know who are the MNers posting about her Lexus while simultaneously accidently leaving her designer handbag in view of her instagrammable trendy lunch while she reads the letter of commendation from daughter's piano teacher, calling said daughter the most G&T, nay, musical prodigy, child she has ever had the good fortune to teach...

Umm - is this not, by your own standards, a stealth boast? Grin

It definitely seems that people upset by what they consider stealth boasts are a tad insecure.

starcrossedseahorse · 27/12/2018 12:03

Damn - bold fail. Sorry!

Sure. Because we couldn’t just disagree Wink

How sweet. Do share pics!

Pogmella · 27/12/2018 12:07

I'm not sure if it's a stealth boast or just a little overly earnest but I did roll my eyes at:

"Its 4pm and we've only just finished opening all the presents- DS1 came down this morning and said it was an avalanche! Thankyou to everyone who gave our children gifts as you all contributed to that magic moment xx"
