My real life recent examples:

"About to hang up our Christmas cards onto the wall and gutted to find our stapler is crap, doesn't staple anything, argh!"

Stealth boast translation: look how popular we are

"I'm so sick of getting asked for ID, I just want to buy my gin without ratching for my drivers license, I'm 35 and a mother of three for goodness sake"

Stealth blast translation: I'm soooo young looking

"Wow Holly got a Nintendo Switch for Christmas! 😱😁"

Stealth boast translation: we got her the Nintendo Switch, so we aren't thanking anyone but just want to show you all what good parents we are

I posted on Facebook that we'd been to Winter Wonderland (which can be fucking expensive if you're not careful) because it was a once a year treat as we don't have much money, and it was worth every penny for the enjoyment.

I hope people didn't think it was a stealth boast.

M3lon · 27/12/2018 12:44

I'm guilty of humblebrags regarding my DD....but when I exploded with rage about being assumed to be a student at conferences (when I'm 40 - but being female, obviously couldn't be expected to be a prof.) everyone thankfully seemed to get I was genuinely pissed at the misogyny and not in any sense humblebragging.

Will stick to actual bragging about DD in the future.

Oh. I was hoping this thread would be funny....

MaisyPops · 27/12/2018 12:53

Would IBU to say the posters accusing some of us of being jealous or killjoys love a bit of stealth posting? #hatersgonnahate
I thought that.

Almost everyone who says they hate humblebragging and stealth boasting have said they have zero issue with people sharing nice, happy moments and things they are proud of.

DC has done really well in their dance today. So proud of them - nice
I finally made it and got my degree as a mature student - nice
we wish you a merry christmas + family selfie with a tree in the background- nice

Don't you just hate it when you run out of wrapping paper when you have one present to go + photo of tree with immaculate mountain of presents and a couple of designer gift bags = stealth boast because I want you to see my stuff and wish your tree looked as good as mine, did you see that I tilted the gift bags so you can see the label...
Oh my goodness. I need a new calendar because we nearly missed DC's tennis presentation evening because we were at their orchestra rehearsal. Between guides, fencing, swimming and youth theatre, I don't know how we don't forget something every week. Amen for local artisan cafe take out box teas = stealth boast, I really want you to know that my children are better than yours and more talented than yours so by extension I must be a great parent. Look at me being all tiger mama when you're ready to fall asleep into your pasta at 7pm.

Slipperboots · 27/12/2018 13:00

People who say they are a ‘bit OCD’ need to be dropped into a vat of mud.

I have a friend who constantly posts her tidy/clean organised home. Then lots of happy selfies with her toddler. Her home is only like that because she gets rid of said toddler every single moment she can as she can’t cope with him.

Mumtotwofurbabies · 27/12/2018 13:06

Just any of the many, many, with a huge pile of presents and the caption , my baby is so lucky on their first Christmas, or ‘Santa’s been’. I have a lot of these on my feed as it’s my first Christmas with a baby. I’m not sure what the purpose of these can be if not to stealth boast as they aren’t thanking people? I find the perfect Christmas posting all very weird and cringeworthy 🤔

Drogosnextwife · 27/12/2018 13:06

The people that don't getbot are the people who are guilty of it 😂.
Such a difference between stealth boasting and just posting nice pics.
I don't even have fb and I still know people who stealth boast in conversation. Its the faux "look how hard my life is, I'm always on the go and keeping this big house, constantly getting things redecorate, going on fancy holidays 4 times a year is all such hard work don't you know! You are lucky you don't have to worry about things like that" 😂 They may not say the last part but that's what they mean.

JacquesHammer · 27/12/2018 13:07

The people that don't getbot are the people who are guilty of it 😂

Well last thing I posted on social media was a video of a sports team reading a WW1 poem in November.

But yeah, one has to be “guilty” to disagree, rather than - you know - just not be bothered Wink

TheKitchenWitch · 27/12/2018 13:08

Re the Alexa thing from earlier, it depends how loudly you shout Grin
We have one on each floor, and I used to be able to set them all off if the doors were open. It used to piss off ds1 no end. We solved the problem by giving them each a different wake word.

GenerationSnowflake · 27/12/2018 13:16

The people that don't getbot are the people who are guilty of it

or people who don't follow braggy insta accounts of people they don't know, people who have genuine friends and family only in their friends list and are happy about the cheerful posts.

redcarbluecar · 27/12/2018 13:21

I’m surprised by how seriously some people are taking this thread, which I took to be lightweight comedy. I think you have to accept that the more you choose to post on social media, the more likely it is that someone, somewhere is rolling their eyes and inwardly mocking or criticising your style of posting. I find stealth boasting amusing, and I’m sure there are people out there who find my FB style risble too.

GummyGoddess · 27/12/2018 13:21

Massive difference between

Only just made the flight, so excited for my trip to Italy!

And

Only just made it to the airport! Thank goodness for the Lexus or we'd have missed the flight! So sad we don't have time to use the First Class lounge. This is so exhausting, I'm never flying anywhere again!

WhyDontYouComeOnOver · 27/12/2018 13:22

I get it, I'm just not horrible enough to bitch about it on Mumsnet as there are always reasons for these things. Perhaps someone stealth boasts about their possessions because they can't have children, or they are insecure, or they are in an abusive relationship etc. Many reasons.

Corneliawildthing · 27/12/2018 13:22

The parent of a child at our school who posted "Oh dear, Millie's coat got dirty at school - looks like I'll have to look out her other Michael Kors coat for her to wear"

She's 6 ffs Hmm

canigetaliein · 27/12/2018 13:23

But yeah, one has to be “guilty” to disagree, rather than - you know - just not be bothered

Why are you bothered by this thread then?

canigetaliein · 27/12/2018 13:25

I'm just not horrible enough to bitch about it on Mumsnet as there are always reasons for these things

Pretty much need to kill the AIBU page then 🤣

JacquesHammer · 27/12/2018 13:26

Why are you bothered by this thread then?

I’m not. It’s an Internet forum.

I often see posts about people getting irritated or laughing at other people on their social media feeds. So many people forget they can simply tailor their experience.

I love seeing people’s posts whatever they say because I have people I want to interact with on there!

InSightMars · 27/12/2018 13:29

redcarbluecar that’s like DH, he posted along the lines that I was unhappy about my car being in the shop for repair and I was having to drive a pos rental. sparking loads of responses asking about his new car, which wasn’t the point of the post at all, oh no.

His new car is pretty though and he’s so chuffed with it, I guess he’s entitled to a small stealth boast.

Mumtotwofurbabies · 27/12/2018 13:29

The were not giving Christmas cards this year but will donate to charity ones one person posted this multiple times along with a picture of the receipt and how much she had donated?

Cantusethatname · 27/12/2018 13:32

I think you have to accept that the more you choose to post on social media, the more likely it is that someone, somewhere is rolling their eyes and inwardly mocking or criticising your style of posting

Exactly right redcarbluecar and you would be very naive indeed to think they weren't.

WhyDontYouComeOnOver · 27/12/2018 13:33

Pretty much need to kill the AIBU page then

True. The amount of absolute thundercunts on AIBU is unreal.

MaisyPops · 27/12/2018 13:34

GummyGoddess
That's spot on.
The difference is obvious to anyone who isnt pretending that there's no difference.

Just treated myself to festive nails (shows photo of cute nails)
Vs
Gin o clock. Goodness I need it after being on the go all day. So much for Christmas holidays, been to the gym, had my hair done, got my brows tinted so no more brow gel for a while, nails looking gorgeous and then went to pick up a bottle of something for me and the hubby to enjoy before we go for our festive date night. Christmas is so exhausting. I'll be glad when it's over obviously won't be but it's suitably dramatic

flugelhorn811 · 27/12/2018 13:41

God some people are a bit sanctimonious aren't they?

What has posting a video of a sports team reading a WW1 poem got to do with anything?

I'm quite enjoying this thread - some of the actual stealth boasts are quite amusing and I think we've established that genuine boasts are fine.
