BifsWif · 26/12/2018 12:37

They need to die? Hmm

That’s the end of me then!

Limensoda · 26/12/2018 12:38

It's short for 'bits and pieces'

Sparklingbrook · 26/12/2018 12:38

Bits as in 'bits and pieces' I presume? ie not a full shop.

Calm down.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 26/12/2018 12:39

Bits

As in bits and bobs

Perfectly standard thing to say

Wishing death on a large proportion of the population on boxing day?

How do you want us to die? Shooting, hanging, burning, acid? The children as well?

Twotinydictators · 26/12/2018 12:39

It's a shortened version of 'bits and pieces' of which the dictionary definition is: 'an assortment of small items'. HTH

CrazyOldBagLady · 26/12/2018 12:40

Just means a few small items. Bits and pieces, bits and bobs. Never get this thing on Mumsnet when an ordinary and innocuous term garners so much angst.

Sparklingbrook · 26/12/2018 12:40

Although I am not too keen on 'picky bits' as an expression for a buffet meal. Don't wish death to people who use it though, I just cringe inwardly.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 26/12/2018 12:41

Lol

No one else a bits and bobs fan? Maybe it's a local thing.

I want to know how the op would like my 2 children to be killed.

BeeFarseer · 26/12/2018 12:41

I'm not at all sorry that my colloquialisms offend you. Grin I got a few bits and pieces and things, and even some stuff.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 26/12/2018 12:42

I have loads of stuff.

Argonauts · 26/12/2018 12:43

I’m with you, OP. It fills me with irrational irritation, though it’s better than ‘bits and bobs’, or the gruesome ‘picky bits’, which suggests a buffet composed of dry skin from between someone’s toes. Gag.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 26/12/2018 12:43

My FIL is 7 3 and a very kind man.

He says this.

How do you want him killed, OP?

ikltownofboothlehem · 26/12/2018 12:44

Because 'things' is so much more descriptive is it?

NothingOnTellyAgain · 26/12/2018 12:45

You also wish death on everyone who says this, Argonauts?

Lovely sentiment.

What manner of death would you go for? Hanging, downing, decapitation? OP hasn't answered maybe you have a view

PortiaCastis · 26/12/2018 12:45

I got a few BITS from the corner shop earlier and no I do not need to die and I wish nitpickers would shut up as they are usually far from perfect themselves

Sparklingbrook · 26/12/2018 12:45

Bits and bobs will always remind me of these two.

People who say “bits” as in “I got a few bits”
PurpleDaisies · 26/12/2018 12:45

Overreacting much?

NothingOnTellyAgain · 26/12/2018 12:46

What are you two going to do with all the bodies?

Having a large % of the population killed at the same time would present a significant health hazard for those remaining.

Augusta2012 · 26/12/2018 12:46

You’re using the word ‘naff’ and complaining about other people’s vocabulary?

It’s not 1988 and you’re not Princess Anne.

PortiaCastis · 26/12/2018 12:47

Afternoon Sparkling seasons greetings and all that

Elfinablender · 26/12/2018 12:47

Think of a boring thing to dislike, claim that those that do this thing must be punished by death. Await attention.

I think we need a board for this, like the ama crowd got shunted elsewhere.

KurriKurri · 26/12/2018 12:47

Nope - you can't be the word police - people can say what they like.

Bits is short for bits and pieces - non specific small items that would take too long and be too boring to list - examples - napkins, poundland walnut whips, paper plates, small cheap filler type gifts, chocolate coins, one of those calenders you can put in your purse that are at the counter in card shops, fluffy topped pencils, a weird kind of 'Christmas jam' from B & M, reduced sprinkles to go on the top of cakes, fancy ice cream wafers that were bogof in tesco, soap even though you only use hand wash because it was on offer (10 for the price of 1) a plastic pill holder and a fold up tote bag from Savers, extra bacon and cheese just in case, packs of plain biscuits (B&M again) in case anyone wants something less rich, a toilet duck, a milkpan with a wobbly handle, a large pack of wrapping paper just in case (in case you want to wrap everything you own until the year 2020), a dot to dot book and a packet of biros.

These are bits. 'Things' are items you went out to get and came home with, you can name them is questioned. Bits always surprise you when you get home because you don't really recall buying them, you just know you went out and got some bits.
