to think piercing of childrens ears should be banned

why why why would anyone want to do this to a three year old????? I went to a childrens party at the weekend, there was a lovely little girl there with the most awful blingy "diamond" earings pulling her ears down - ear piercing hurts, it is tantamount to child abuse IMO.

toy, what about the grammatical errors ?

toy23 · 27/06/2007 13:10

theUrbanDryad im not going to appologise to any1 they insult my grammer and spelling ill insult them.

theUrbanDryad · 27/06/2007 13:10

that's an excellent point Housemum.

i do think that in this country, many of the white people who choose to have their babies' ears pierced are of a certain level in society. that's not rascist or classist or anything-ist, it's just an observation based on the facts. what is needed is more education, and perhaps a notice up in places like Claire's saying "Ear piercing in a baby is more likely to get infected and causes a baby pain" or something slightly less lame than that...

theUrbanDryad · 27/06/2007 13:11

oh toy, really. let's not get off the debate. the offending post has been deleted. if you don't have anything valid to contribute to the discussion then i suggest you step away.

toy23 · 27/06/2007 13:12

Grrrr about the grammar dyslexia does not just cause spelling mystakes it can affect all aspecs of english depending on seerverty of it.

NuttyMuffins · 27/06/2007 13:14

I find your post quite offensive UrbanDyrad tbh.

lulumama · 27/06/2007 13:14

you made a nasty racist comment...totally out of proportion to the comments about your grammar, and the fact your comment was deleted speaks volumes

toy23 · 27/06/2007 13:14

theUrbanDryad yeh wwell my view is is a baby cant say no i dont whant something done then it shouldent be done.

theUrbanDryad · 27/06/2007 13:16

why Nutty?

NuttyMuffins · 27/06/2007 13:18

'i do think that in this country, many of the white people who choose to have their babies' ears pierced are of a certain level in society.'

You might not think that is classist, but I do.

funkimummy · 27/06/2007 13:18

I'm University educated. I live in an affluent area of the country. My husband and I both have good jobs, as do all my family. My child has pierced ears. As mentioned in previous post - through tradition.

If you think (those of you whom are of this opinion) that makes me a 'certain level' of society, then so be it. I feel sorry for those people who are obviously so very blinkered and judgemental of others.

I'm with Happy Daddy on his views here. There are plenty of other parenting issues to worry besides pierced ears.

divastrop · 27/06/2007 13:20

its ok to be classist on MN though

theUrbanDryad · 27/06/2007 13:22

ok, you'll notice i didn't say all people who have their babies' ears pierced are of a certain level of society. many are. they're the same people who sit on the bus and play music out loud on their mobile phones. it's not classist. it's an observation.

Mercy · 27/06/2007 13:25

Sweeping generalisations aren't exactly helping your argument, Urban.

Soph73 · 27/06/2007 13:27

Over here mums take their newborns to a room in the hospital where they pierce their ears before they leave (normally 2 days old). Not sure whether they´d do a boys ears though! Personally I don´t like the look of earrings on a baby (was 14 when had mine done) and would make any daughter of mine wait until she was a teenager.

theUrbanDryad · 27/06/2007 13:29

i see you're all ignoring my caveats.

anyway, this argument's been done so many times. it's so pointless going over it again.

let me make a sweeping generalisation for you: all young mums bottle feed, pierce their babies' ears, make them wear stiff denim, and play music out loud on their mobiles.

their children are also far more likely to be under-educated, end up with juvenile criminal records and end up as young parents themselves.

there. is that sweeping enough for you?

divastrop · 27/06/2007 13:29

if you made generalisations about an ethnic minority group, you would be called a racist,so why is it not 'classist' to make generalisations about a certain social group?

theUrbanDryad · 27/06/2007 13:29

Soph, where is that?

schneebly · 27/06/2007 13:33

toy23 you are totally out of order.

Menarefrommars · 27/06/2007 13:34

Sorry but absolutely PMSL. Clearly you don't know UD and didn't read her post properly (she's the least judgemental person I know).

Her original observation was in fact spot on. IMO, many babies with pierced ears come from less well educated parents who know no better. They believe that it looks 'pretty' for a 6 month old to have sparkly diamonds in her ears regardless of the fact that it will hurt the child to have them done.

As someone said earlier in the thread, would you tattoo your 6 month old cos it looks 'pretty'? Not much different IMO, both involve sharpe objects and both leave permanent scarring.

I think not.

Mercy · 27/06/2007 13:45

'just an observation based on the facts'

I knwo I can be pretty dim at times but I really don't understand UD's post tbh. What facts?

divastrop · 27/06/2007 13:47

why is it assumed that working class parents are 'less well educated'?

im a working class SAHM,and i dont think that earrings in 6 month old babies look pretty, and i am pretty well educated, thank you.

toy23 · 27/06/2007 13:48

schneebly im not being out of order,i just being me.If people are to snobby and stuck up in this forum. To whant to hear a workingclasses point of view. They should rename the forum to SNOBSAREUS

theUrbanDryad · 27/06/2007 13:54

hmm, you've got a point divastrop. the people i'm talking about aren't working class are they?

perhaps "das untermensch" might be a better description!!

toy23 · 27/06/2007 13:59

I agree with divastrops last post having a look around the forum i have noticed there is a lot of genralisation about working class people. Why is it you have the right to judge people on there classes and not on there races or culture.
