to think piercing of childrens ears should be banned

why why why would anyone want to do this to a three year old????? I went to a childrens party at the weekend, there was a lovely little girl there with the most awful blingy "diamond" earings pulling her ears down - ear piercing hurts, it is tantamount to child abuse IMO.

to get back to the original post - it might not be child abuse, but what else do you call something which is done deliberately to a child and also causes them pain?

toy23 · 27/06/2007 12:47

Not when you are dyslexic.happydaddy

divastrop · 27/06/2007 12:48

yes,if its a baby who cant say they dont want it done!

theUrbanDryad · 27/06/2007 12:48

i should add to my last post - and also has no benefit whatsoever (otherwise you could add injections to that)

toy23 · 27/06/2007 12:48

Grrrr i play a lot of online games just habbit.Thats way i always type.

HappyDaddy · 27/06/2007 12:49

toy23, you can spell dyslexic perfectly though...

divastrop, i don't see it as abuse or anything that serious. personally i don't like little children with earrings. I can't judge other's parenting as mine is most likely full of holes.

mumblechum · 27/06/2007 12:50

I agree that when I see a baby or toddler with piercing, I automatically assume their parents are uneducated, lower class people.

I'm joining the snobs club.

Surely there should be some legislation to prevent a child of under, say, 14 having piercings done?

toy23 · 27/06/2007 12:50

HappyDaddy i googled it.

Grrrr · 27/06/2007 12:50

I'd never have guessed

theUrbanDryad · 27/06/2007 12:51

HD - i noticed that too!

divastrop · 27/06/2007 12:53

i know nobody is perfect and i dont often judge other peoples parenting, but i dont see peircing baby's ears as a parenting issue.

Grrrr · 27/06/2007 12:53

Happydaddy, the phrase "like shooting fish in a barrel" springs to mind. It's just cruel isn't it.

If my boys don't learn to spell and punctuate and understand the basic grammatical rules in school I *will" be paying for extra tuition !

mumblechum · 27/06/2007 12:53

Why not, Diva?

toy23 · 27/06/2007 12:55

Grrrr you dont know much about dyslexia if you think exstra tuition would help, and if i did help it would help very little.

divastrop · 27/06/2007 12:58

mumble-i see it as abuse, and saying its a 'parenting issue' would,to me,be like saying that giving a toddler alcohol is a 'parenting issue'.i just think its wrong to do something that causes unesassary pain to a child who is too young to consent to it.

Mercy · 27/06/2007 12:58

at toy

Anyway, I have found this site A Brief History of Earrings.

There must be more info re the talisman/spiritual aspect - I'll see what I can find

geekgirl · 27/06/2007 13:00

but people do plenty of things that are cruel in some way or another to their children - early weaning, cc, four hour feeding schedules, hard shoes before they're walking properly, blablabla the list goes on. Ear piercing, whilst not everyone's cup of tea (mine neither) is really pretty low on the list of unpleasant things done to children for no particularly good reason.

lulumama · 27/06/2007 13:00

dyslexia is not an excuse for racism

that post was vile

glad it has been deleted

toy23 · 27/06/2007 13:01

lulumama i wasent making exscuses for my views i was replieung to the person poiinting out my spelling mistakes

toy23 · 27/06/2007 13:02

I will never make exscuses for my views.

toy23 · 27/06/2007 13:02

I will never make exscuses for my views.

lulumama · 27/06/2007 13:04

well you should be ashamed of yourself, but you clearly aren't.

theUrbanDryad · 27/06/2007 13:04

ok, well i won't make an excuse for the view that you were way out of order and owe expat an apology then.

Housemum · 27/06/2007 13:06

Banning ear piercing would mean that some people would do it themselves at home. I don't like it myself, DD1 had hers done when she left Junior school, kind of rite-of-passage. Have known Italian/Spanish/Indian babies with earrings - that's what their parents like and I wouldn't presume to think my opinion counts more than theirs. Over time, opinions will change and it may be that child ear-percing becomes deely unfashionable.

Perhaps the issue is more the easy availabilty - perhaps there should be a 2-tier licensing system? Only certain establishments licensed to do under 8's for instance - part of the procedure would be a "warning" talk about infections & risks to the parents.

toy23 · 27/06/2007 13:08

I will never be ashamed of my views as i belive i have no reson to be,and i dont belive its racist to belive that people should respect the culture country that they live in.
