To ask what we have to look forward to after March 29th 2019

It turns out Theresa May’s definition of ‘soverignity and democracy’ is to postpone a democratic vote, not allow anyone except her to change their mind and generally run to clock down until her deal is the only option.

So what do people think about that?

What are the benefits we have to look forward to when we leave the EU given it turns out ‘they don’t actually need is more than we need them’ after all?

What are we doing this for?

(And for those who want to ignore Brexit, don’t read this thread. Equally, this is the biggest thing this country has ever faced in most of our generation so please don’t banish this to the Brexit section)

Plus Brexiteers knew all along, it was about suffering together and they wanted it

The ones I speak to knew that it wouldn't be "pain free" in the short term - but that's the same of any significant change.

bellinisurge · 19/12/2018 13:09

The good news is they will get what they wished for

MattFreisCheekyDimples · 19/12/2018 13:18

Ooh, I know this one @Bearbehind!

If we crash out, with all the chaos and hardship that will undoubtedly ensue, we'll then have to rejoin in a few years with our tail between our legs, and will be obliged to join the euro and Schengen at that time, which personally I would welcome. Many of the UK's problems vis-a-vis the EU have arisen organically from our historic unwillingness to commit to it wholeheartedly imo.

(But obviously it would be better just to stay and make a better fist of it.)

frasersmummy · 19/12/2018 13:19

One positive thing it will mean is that the eu will no longer dictate fishing quotas on the scottish fishing fleet. We will manage our own rights over who can fish in our waters

And when Scotland gains independence?

I shall be jumping for joy and packing up the car for the great drive up the road.

UnnecessaryFennel · 19/12/2018 13:50

The ones I speak to knew that it wouldn't be "pain free" in the short term

'Getting out of the EU will be quick and easy' John Redwood
'Easiest deal in human history' David Davis
'Absolutely nobody is talking about threatening our place in the single market' Daniel Hannan
'If we vote to leave then I think the union will be stronger' Michael Gove
'Trade relations with the Eu could be sorted out in an afternoon over a cup of coffee' Gerard Batten

UnnecessaryFennel · 19/12/2018 13:51

And of course...

'If a democracy cannot change its mind, it ceases to be a democracy”. David Davis

MagnificentSevenHeaven · 19/12/2018 14:51

I didn't speak to any of them. Grin

But the average pro brexit person knew that it wouldn't be plain sailing & they were (are) prepared to accept it.

bellinisurge · 19/12/2018 14:52

Pity the average Leave voter wasn't running the Leave campaign, then @MagnificentSevenHeaven . They might have told the truth about difficulties. Or is that Project Fear?

Theoryofmould · 19/12/2018 15:20

We'll have nothing to look forwards to, zero, zilch, nada.
I don't want to live amongst the idiots that think surviving is acceptable in the 21st century because it harks back to a bygone era. Sadly I'm stuck with them.

KennDodd · 19/12/2018 15:28

Good, are they willing to lose their own jobs over it or just watch other people lose their jobs?

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 19/12/2018 15:34

But the average pro brexit person knew that it wouldn't be plain sailing & they were (are) prepared to accept it

The average anti brexit person saying it wont be plain sailing and that they dont want to accept it is told they are talking the country down and contributing to project fear

UnnecessaryFennel · 19/12/2018 15:39

Oh honestly, magnificent, full marks for trying but how disingenuous can you get? Grin

You know as well as I do that these were the messages sent out by the Leave campaigns. At no point did anyone on the Leave side suggest that it would be difficult or that there would be pain, short-term or long term. It was all going to be easypeasylemonsqueezy and any concerns were just PROJECT FEAR*.

If you can look at the mess that's happening now and say you're still ok with it, well that's one thing. But don't try and rewrite history.

therewillbetime · 19/12/2018 15:50

It is a fallacy that people from other European countries don't want to come here now. I work in the education sector and since Brexit, the number of families from other countries has continued to increase, in fact, there has been an influx from certain countries.

Satsumaeater · 19/12/2018 15:58

And when Scotland gains independence

Will you let me in as a refugee from Brexitland please?

The more I think about the ERG and their ilk, the more I really think they want us back in the 1950s, or even further back.

If we cannot travel (easily), we cannot compare our lot with that of the EU countries. If we can't study or work abroad we have to do so in the UK, pay through the nose for studies and get paid peanuts in the UK for working, because we can't go anywhere else to work (admittedly this only applies to higher skilled people but then the only higher skilled people will be those with the money to study).

If we have a massive economic shock, there will be fewer jobs and by the law of averages, fewer women in work as they tend to earn less, and then they'll have their aim of women back "in their place" at home.

Satsumaeater · 19/12/2018 16:00

Sorry I missed a sentence out - it would generally be the higher skilled people who move around for work although perhaps not - there are enough lower skilled EU citizens here at the moment and we need them! But if they leave and UK citizens can't leave, the idea that employers have to pay more won't fly because there is no competition for the jobs.

yolofish · 19/12/2018 16:01

English refugees, heading for Scotland or Ireland... I'll be up for it if I can wangle my way in to one or the other.

DBML · 19/12/2018 16:09

I don’t understand the argument. We have voted to leave the EU. Nobody has to justify the pros or cons because like it or not, we are leaving the EU in March. We’ll all soon enough find out the true pros and cons. Until then I don’t believe anyone can be sure.

MagnificentSevenHeaven · 19/12/2018 16:09

Grin

You do realise there's fuck all there right? That's why half of them moved to England!!! Grin Grin

Don't speak common sense. This is Mumsnet, where the day isn't complete without a healthy dose of hysteria.

I'm surprised they've got time to post, they could be stocking up on tins & bottled water!! Grin

UnnecessaryFennel · 19/12/2018 16:24

Ah. Showing your true colours after all.

PutYourBackIntoit · 19/12/2018 16:26

Pmsl at the 'all racists voted leave' comment.
Any racist who values their money more than their racist ideologies, voted remain. I know 4 of them (ukip voters no less) but I'd put money on there being an awful lot more!!

ChristmasTwatteryDoesMyHeadIn · 19/12/2018 16:33

You do realise there's fuck all there right?

Oh lovely, a thinly disguised xenophobic sneery comment. Actually I think you’ll find there’s a massive support for Scottish independence from large groups of English people who live here (and are more than welcome despite the propaganda!)

There’s fuck all there? Stop being so fucking snotty.
