To ask if you look like shit?

No matter how much I mosturise, sleep, drink water, eat healthy(ish), remove my make up before bed, exfoliate, exercise etc etc etc ... all the usual stuff you're told to do I always look like shit. I'm due on my period next week so it's only going to get worse so my high hopes of looking all refreshed over Christmas are down the drain.

Does anyone else feel like this?

OP posts:
ThumbWitchesAbroad · 14/12/2018 13:25

Yes, I mostly do.
The weight has been creeping up around my belly so I look even more shit than usual, and have had to buy bigger clothes which, sadly, are just a bit too big and now I look like a bag lady. I'm comfortable, which helps, but looking like a bag lady was never the aim so I'm a bit ticked off at that.

But I do have positives - hair is still relatively grey-free, and my skin isn't too bad if you don't look too closely - but no one would ever call me good looking. And the heavy-duty glasses don't help!

Good job I'm not trying to attract anyone's attention, really.

Eliza9917 · 14/12/2018 13:28

I'm fat but other than that I don't look like shit. I don't look well at the moment because I've got a nasty cough/cold but I still don't look like shit.

I always wear a full face of make up and do my hair every day though, if that makes any difference.

KaliforniaDreamz · 14/12/2018 13:32

MrsCrap i have sensitive skin but find Carins self tan fine. It's called Clarins Sun Eau Lactée autobronzante Visage & Décolleté 125 ml

it's a bit of a faff in that u apply via cotton pad but it's very subtle and doesn't hurt my skin.

namastayinbed · 14/12/2018 13:34

Yes, I look like stollen! But probably because I'm not drinking water, eating healthily and moisturizing. Will start again in 2019.

Swipetounlock · 14/12/2018 13:35

I bought an illuminated magnifying mirror. Better to know the truth.

Lovemusic33 · 14/12/2018 13:36

I’m 37, my skin looks worse in the winter, I have sensitive skin, all I use is Waitrose face cream (might even be body butter) before I go to bed, my skins now super soft and not dry at all. My biggest issue is with my hair, I can’t get it to grow, it’s dry and snaps off 😢

peachgreen · 14/12/2018 13:38

No. I take good care of my skin, drink loads of water, and know how to do my make-up and hair to flatter me. That said, I'm fat, so some people think I look like shit regardless but not much I can do about them!

I looked better this time last year though as I was heavily pregnant and really suited it. Post-pregnancy is not kind and I've only just started getting myself back together.

diddl · 14/12/2018 13:39

"I got to the point where I don't care anymore. "

Same here.

I probably do look like shit to some people-but they aren't people whose opinion I give any fucks about whatsoever.

"I always wear a full face of make up and do my hair every day though, if that makes any difference."

If you look overly done up you might just look a different kind of shitGrin

GrabEmByThePatriarchy · 14/12/2018 13:40

I think fake tan depends on whether it suits you or not. There is the potential to end up looking like slightly browner shit!

VietnameseCrispyFish · 14/12/2018 13:40

I feel like if you can make the time there’s certain things that will make anyone look less shit!

I look like shit first thing in the morning, but after a shower, washing conditioning drying and straightening hair (and a good cut and dye every couple of months), full face of makeup, and drinking 2l water per day, I reckon I look pretty good. I’m not naturally gorgeous but when I’ve put the effort in and look in the mirror I am mostly happy and content with my appearance.

HappyPunky · 14/12/2018 13:41

My clothes are tighter than they were the day before i had dd, my skin is dry and patchy, frizzy hair that hasn't been cut professionally in over three years, knackered back and knees so I hobble everywhere, exhausted because DD either gets up for the day at 3 or has a few hours of being awake during the night.

I used to be quite young looking and decently presented and now I look like a witch.

spanishwife · 14/12/2018 13:45

Are you eating enough healthy fats and oils, dark green veg, vitamin C?

If you aren't eating those in abundance then it's unlikely that you'll feel great or look great.

Birdsgottafly · 14/12/2018 13:49

I'm 51.

I sorted out a skin care regime, involving hyaluronic acid, retinol, face peels and I microneedle and use radio therapy.

People comment on my 'glow'.

It just takes more of an effort. I don't wear more than under eye concealer and mascara most days.

When I was in Peri Menopause I looked like shit. I'm due to start HRT, even though my last period was five years ago and I'm quite excited by it.

The thing that does get me down is the hair removal that I have to do, that I didn't before.

MeredithShepherdssister · 14/12/2018 13:49

Yup. Have a newborn and a 4 year old. Weigh a stone heavier than pre pregnancy so about 5 things fit me. Hair, skin and nails have gone to shit. No sleep or time to exercise. Urgh.

spanishwife · 14/12/2018 13:52

Hair, skin and nails have gone to shit.

That is definitely a diet thing.

Grace212 · 14/12/2018 13:53

@Birdsgottafly

you use radiotherapy - sorry, what is that please?

Category · 14/12/2018 13:53

Yep. I'm late 20s and used to be quite attractive (I know that sounds big headed but I look back at pictures of me 5 or so years ago and I can't believe it's me) iv put on about a stone, my hair is a disaster, dry wierd colour and greys are staring to come along now, my hair used to be long and so healthy looking. My nose seems to be getting bigger each year, my skin is dry but also oily and spotty and wrinkles are starting and I just constantly look a scruffy mess. I dread bumping into anyone I know from years ago! I have 2 kids and put it down to that but no one else i know who has kids seems to have gone through this reverse ugly duckling thing Grin

Ratterschnatter · 14/12/2018 13:54

Mari50 😂 you nearly made me pour my cuppa over myself, phone and DD when I read that! Fucked in an RTA kinda way 😂

bonbonours · 14/12/2018 13:55

What I'm getting from this thread is that a lot of women out there really need a boost to their self esteem. Rather than trying to be perfect, why not count your blessings, think about what you do like about your appearance. I hardly ever wear make up, am overweight and have loads of wrinkles and a scattering of grey hairs but I focus in smiling and being a nice person rather than grumbling about how I look. I also know my husband still fancies me, and don't care much about what other people think about how I look.

yellowumbrellas · 14/12/2018 13:55

Hope this isn't too annoying pollyanna positive but I bet none of you look like shit.

I never see a person on the street and think 'god, you look like shit' - I always just think 'oh, there's a person'.

Humans look like humans and most of us don't look like models or airbrushed celebrities.

The main thing that makes humans look nice is if they smile.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 14/12/2018 13:55

I am off sick with a stinking cold and look like I have been hit by a bus. Normally I look okay though, mainly because I make an effort with makeup and skincare, regularly get my hair and eyebrows done, watch my weight, and wear nice clothes. I definitely couldn’t roll out of bed and go out feeling and looking great, it takes work. I am childless, and we have a decent household income - having time and a bit of money to throw at the problem helps.

Rhiannon13 · 14/12/2018 13:55

Yes, regularly look like shit and it's worse today thanks to the remains of a cold sore that REFUSES to be covered up. If only staying in with a bag on my head was an option.

MaryDollNesbitt · 14/12/2018 13:56

I'm one of those night and day women you don't recognise in the street if I'm not wearing my makeup! Blush I don't wear a lot of it, but it makes ALL the difference to my face!

As my mum so elegantly put it once, "Mary love, please don't take this the wrong way, but I think you need to pop on some blusher. You're looking a bit corpse-y, sweetheart."

Deepgrooves · 14/12/2018 13:57

Yep. I’ve just posted about Botox. I am fit, body is same after 3 dcs but dear God my face. I look so haggard. Massive frown lines. Like you op I drink loads of water, exercise, moisturize , don’t drink/smoke etc...
Has anyone found that once their dcs started sleeping better they looked better? Mine still wake regularly... I am always told I look exhausted and I hate that.
No answers for you op but I emphasize..

Gilliganskitchenisland · 14/12/2018 13:58

I usually look mid-level shit because I still get spots in my 30s 😫 and have dark circles under my eyes, neither of which can be shifted with any amount of virtuous living or lotions and potions. At the moment I've surpassed my usual shitness though because my sugar intake has roughly tripled in preparation for Christmas. So my skin's having some kind of identity crisis (dry? oily? resurrecting old faded acne scars from the 90s? all of the above!), plus I'm now fat and mood swingy to add to the general charm.
