To ask what you think a normal house temperature is?

DH grew up with parents who have the thermostat set to 23 degrees day and night - to me this is swelteringly hot, and I sleep without covers on (or the window open if I can get away with it!). My parents, on the other hand, set theirs to 18 or 19 degrees during the day, and 16 degrees at night.

DH prefers a warmer house, I prefer a cooler one, so we have frequent heating wars!

What do you consider a 'normal' temperature for a UK home?

19.5 daytime no heating overnight comes on an hour before we get up.

HelenaJustina · 13/12/2018 18:46

20-21 during the day, off completely at night

BestZebbie · 13/12/2018 19:31

Thermostat is on 20-21 (analogue dual so not an exact science). However, our living room is the coldest room in the house so we have a top up fan heater in there for when we are using the room. Directly in front of that it can reach about 23, which is my preferred living temperature if sitting down! We are all wearing multiple layers, jumpers, thick socks, slippers etc so if I felt cold through that I'd consider the room was inadequately heated and turn the thermostat up.

OhFlipMama · 13/12/2018 20:12

Oh I couldn't have it on at night, the noise from the heating would annoy me! plus I get super hot once in bed. Totally understand why people like to leave it on though. It's just hat we all prefer it a certain way.

enoughisenough2 · 13/12/2018 20:18

29 degrees

loveyoutothemoon · 13/12/2018 20:26

enough 29?!!!

If I'm in the house in the day 18.5, evening 19.5 and off at night unless it's -10!!

bellabasset · 13/12/2018 22:35

My thermostat is set at 20° and the ch is on for 2 hours in the morning and evening. My sitting room is currently 20° an hour after the heating went off.

CaptainCarp · 14/12/2018 21:57

@Donnnerbox
I can't speak for others but ours is because if we don't keep the flat temperate we get bad mould /damp. Also we used more gas trying to get it up to temperature twice a day than now when we have it on "constant" every time it drops under 16.

MyDcAreMarvel · 14/12/2018 22:00

24 in the day , switched off at night.

CustardOmlet · 14/12/2018 22:10

My thermostat is broken so currently set at 17c and I’m sweating!

speakout · 14/12/2018 22:12

I don't use the timer, and there is no set temperature.

I use manual control.

It really depends what the family are doing.

I never have any heating on overnight.

During the day if I am busy, doing floors, changing sheets I am happy even if it goes down to 14 degrees, I usually fling the windows open too for good measure too.

I may be hot coming in from the gym, DS runs and doesn't like coming back to a hot house.

Other times we may b having a cosy night and indulge in a bit of warmth so 22 may be an ideal temperature.

Or anything inbetween.

I don't want my house the same temperature all the time.

GinaLinetti99 · 14/12/2018 22:15

Ours is set to 16c and is only on during the day.

The thermostat is a fixed one and is in our hallway which is ridiculously cold. Anything above about 17c means the rest of the house is boiling!

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 14/12/2018 22:17

I set mine to 22 and feel cold at anything less than that!!

I live in a lovely new build though and so it warms up quickly, I only have the heating on in the evening, overnight it drops to 19 degrees at this time of year and when I got in from work today it was 17. That to me is freezing! !

Tessabelle1 · 14/12/2018 22:17

Mine is set at 19 but I'll boost it to 21 if I get a bit chilly

Bigonesmallone3 · 14/12/2018 22:23

I like it at 20 all the time..
DP changes it to 18 or less when he gets home..
we both can change it on our phones so try to do it sneakily

PookieDo · 14/12/2018 22:23

I can’t set temperature I get given whatever the Storage Heater Gods give me. Other than that it’s layering. I don’t actually know what a comfortable temperature would be

Bedrooms have 1 storage heater in each but DD2’s room is like ice

Downstairs has only 1 radiator the entire area (in living room but nothing in bathroom kitchen or hall). Sitting on loo is like sitting on ice!

Lovingbenidorm · 14/12/2018 22:25

25 minimum

PookieDo · 14/12/2018 22:30

It’s bad I feel really jealous reading this thread about central heating! I’m private renting and this is the downside to it. I grew up with just 2 storage heaters in my childhood home and it was exactly the same you just had to never ever take your socks off!

DD and are so cold we are both piled on the sofa with blankets and she’s fallen asleep. I’m Going to brave going upstairs in a bit!

delilahbucket · 14/12/2018 22:36

We have ours at 18 first thing, 20 throughout the day (I work at home) and then 14 at night. To be honest though, no two thermostats are the same. Had you asked me on my old thermostat I would have said 22 maximum, where as now it is rarely turned above 20.

StoneofDestiny · 14/12/2018 22:41

21 degrees.
No overnight heating, just comes on 1 hour before we get up.

yikesanotherbooboo · 14/12/2018 22:46

I only heat bathrooms and tv room( occasionally kitchen / dining if it is dreadfully cold outside) . Thermostat at20 but if we have a fire I would put thermostat down. Old draughty house so if we are about in the day during winter I do put the heating on.

winnerwiner · 14/12/2018 23:00

21 from 5-9pm, keep it around 16 over night. 17-18 during the day unless we have company, I put the fire on. I am in the put a jumper on first category too! We are in Canada, though, last Christmas it was -30C, so turning it off during the night would be a little risky, inside water supplies could freeze. The heating is really dry I have to run humidifiers to stop the kids getting nosebleeds, I think the cold freezes all the water in the air or something! House seems fairly efficient, athough our entire loft has just been filled with insulation. TBF coming back from outside when it's that cold, 6 degrees can feel warm inside. I learned early on to not put all my stuff on until the kids are dressed, we have 24 items to put on between the 3 of us to put on before going on the school run, 2 snow boots, snow pants, coat, neck warmer, hat, 2 gloves but it's so pretty and the sledging, skating and skiing make it worth it. Summer is a different story, usually have air con on around 22.

BeekyChitch · 14/12/2018 23:06

I like it really warm and put it on to about 27°C for 2/3 hours at night (6pm) and 17°C at 7am.

I can also tell you what is NOT a normal temperature - 29°C for 3 days solid. There's a mode called 'party mode' on our system. I had no idea how to work it (clearly) Oops!! Blush

NanooCov · 14/12/2018 23:11

Ours is generally a constant 20

DrWashout · 14/12/2018 23:12

Pookie sympathies, it is absolutely wretched being cold. It's a bit of a lottery with rental - we've had a fantastically warm flat with storage heaters but you're obviously not so lucky.
