To ask what you think a normal house temperature is?

DH grew up with parents who have the thermostat set to 23 degrees day and night - to me this is swelteringly hot, and I sleep without covers on (or the window open if I can get away with it!). My parents, on the other hand, set theirs to 18 or 19 degrees during the day, and 16 degrees at night.

DH prefers a warmer house, I prefer a cooler one, so we have frequent heating wars!

What do you consider a 'normal' temperature for a UK home?

20 in the day, 21 in the evening and off overnight.

QueenofmyPrinces · 13/12/2018 10:03

19-20 in the day and 22 at night.

Hedgehoginthefog · 13/12/2018 10:03

I don't see the point in changing the thermostat at night. Surely the heating is not on at night? Ours turns off as we get into bed, and comes back on half an hour before we get up.

Berniethefastestmilkwoman · 13/12/2018 10:04

21 during the day and evening. No heating at all overnight unless it is really cold. I hate the heat being on when I'm in bed.

winsinbin · 13/12/2018 10:04

I keep the thermostat at 19. Teenage DC wander around in shorts and a t shirt and complain that they are cold but DH and I are happy.

SIL keeps hers at 24 and all the windows shut. It awful and makes me feel slightly ill. I used to think she’d turn it down when she reached the menopause but that ship has sailed and her house is still sweltering.

Fatbutt · 13/12/2018 10:04

ours is at 18 all the time, then we turn it up or grab a blanket if we are chilly!

misskatamari · 13/12/2018 10:05

i think growing up we had it early 20s. Now i have to pay for the heating we don't have it on overnight, and put it on if its around 16 or lower, and then ill bung it up to 18/19. I now wear jumpers more often tho Grin.

LimitIsUp · 13/12/2018 10:05

We have 21 downstairs, but I have the thermostat set low overnight as I prefer cool bedrooms for sleeping. I sometimes set the thermostat higher in the kitchen because it has 3 external walls and is a large space

letsdolunch321 · 13/12/2018 10:06

Lowest is 16 and high is 23 - my temp gauge is set at that. Htg is off during the night, on for an hour for getting reAdy and on again at 4- 9.30pm. OH is a hot one, if I feel chilly the fleecy blanket comes out 😁

Redgreencoverplant · 13/12/2018 10:07

19 when we are in the house and awake. We all wear jumpers and fluffy socks and there are blankets on the sofas for watching TV. At night it turns off but is set not to go below 9 but rarely drops below 16.

Tinty · 13/12/2018 10:07

18 for one hour in the morning before we get up, but we are at work all day. Off until 4.00, on at 18 until 9.00 then off until morning. I like a cooler house.

Roomba · 13/12/2018 10:07

16-18°C during the day
Heating off all night - usually drops to about 14° downstairs and 12° upstairs when it's cold.

My parents have their thermostat set to 24°C, 24/7! I've begged them to turn it down a bit when we visit as we're all sweltering, unable to sleep, throwing windows wide open, dry skin, constantly thirsty and getting headaches. But apparently we'll catch a chill if it is turned down Confused I try to get outdoors with my kids as much as possible when we visit as I can't bear it. Then I feel absolutely frozen for days when we return home again.

Jappydooda · 13/12/2018 10:08

I have the thermostat set at 20 over the winter - it did creep up to 23 when the Beast from the East was in full flow (I got snowed in for 3 days!). The heating goes on at 6.30am and off at 7.30am and then on for 5.30 and off at 9.30 pm and this seems to keep the house a nice temperature. I try not to have it on during the weekends and usually light a fire in the sitting room to take the chill off.

Lazybonita · 13/12/2018 10:10

20-21 during the day, 18 at night. I hate a cold house.

Whyislarryhappy · 13/12/2018 10:10

Recently moved to private rented house. The two reception rooms and kitchen are one after the other with no doors in between so it can get pretty cold here! We have ours set to 20. If its freezing we blast 30 for 20mins. At night we turn it off though as it's so hot!

SlightlyCoddled · 13/12/2018 10:11

17.5 during the day and off at night

Nenic · 13/12/2018 10:13

Early twenties at least. My mum always had the heating low and I was utterly miserable. I always think back to that when I read on here about people who have it on low or even worse, not switched on. I can’t bear to be cold in my home now

Nenic that's actually a lot of what I remember about being a child in the 70's, being cold. It's fun to reminisce about the ice on the windows, washing your face in freezing water, not wanting to move in bed in case you moved into a cold patch, the cold 'hot' water bottle, shaking when getting into your clothes in the morning. It wasn't that fun living like that and I felt permanently and bone-chillingly cold til about my early twenties when I realised you didn't actually have to live like that if you didn't want to!

AgentProvocateur · 13/12/2018 10:22

15 in the morning and evening. Jo gestingbon at night - we’d swelter!

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 13/12/2018 10:22

This all depends on the size and age of the house.
A small new build will retain heat much better than a Victorian build.
Also the layout has an impact. Open plan, large rooms , high ceiling with a lot of windows will take more heating than small rooms, lower ceilings and small window.
So how high someone sets their thermostat needs to be taken along side what they are heating.

My house is a 6o’s build with high ceilings and a lot of glass. Heating set a 20 all the time and still needs a boost if I am sitting around doing nothing.

AgentProvocateur · 13/12/2018 10:23

FFS, that should say NO HEATING ON AT NIGHT Hmm

floodypuddle · 13/12/2018 10:25

It depends what you are doing? If you are gonna be sitting for a long time then 21 (in office maintenance this is considered the sweet spot) . Running around cleaning etc 18-19. We turn it off overnight. If you have a decent duvet and sheets you shouldn't need the heating blasting at you.

EffOrf · 13/12/2018 10:26

In the day when I am doing stuff 19, sitting down in the evening 20-21, overnight no heating unless really cold outside as it occasionally is in January time

adaline · 13/12/2018 10:28

18-19 degrees during the day, off at night. We normally just have the fire on during the day though and don't bother with the heating except first thing in the morning for an hour or so.
