To ask what you think a normal house temperature is?

DH grew up with parents who have the thermostat set to 23 degrees day and night - to me this is swelteringly hot, and I sleep without covers on (or the window open if I can get away with it!). My parents, on the other hand, set theirs to 18 or 19 degrees during the day, and 16 degrees at night.

DH prefers a warmer house, I prefer a cooler one, so we have frequent heating wars!

What do you consider a 'normal' temperature for a UK home?

Wow at this of year 20-25 is the norm for us!

BagelGoesWalking · 13/12/2018 14:18

Haven't RTFT but I would be sweltering at 23 deg! I usually have it around 18, at the most 19 (just a boost for a few hours).

It goes down to 11 overnight - from about 11:30pm. Even if I go to bed between 1 and 2am, the thermostat still shows 17 degrees - so residual heat is there for quite a few hours afterwards. It's quite ridiculous to have it so high at night! That's what duvets are for.

PumpkinKitty82 · 13/12/2018 14:25

I’d say about 19-20.
But at night I don’t mind 17

Firesuit · 13/12/2018 14:26

I think this thread is misleading, people are giving what they set their thermostat to. In most cases that doesn't tell you much about what temperature their home is. My thermostat is set to 18, but that achieves a temperature of 22, measured on a separate digital thermometer.

After 8 hours of the heating being off overnight, the actual temperature is still 19, so still more than the thermostat.

tryinganewname · 13/12/2018 14:27

Mine is on 22 right now and I'm freezing!

Delatron · 13/12/2018 14:32

I like it to be early 20s. I can’t imagine being in a house with a temperature of 14-16 and being comfortable, even in a jumper! You’d need a coat on and it would still be horrible.

No heating on overnight though. I like it cold at night.

Firesuit · 13/12/2018 14:33

If it's not too cold outside, our thermostat is 14-14.5. If it's really cold out it will be on 15-16 max.

The point of having a thermostat is supposed to be that you don't have to manually adjust your heating according to what the outside weather is like.

AnnabelleLecter · 13/12/2018 14:35

19/20 in the day. 21 in the evening.
It's been really mild though and house is well insulated so it's not been on much apart from first thing and late afternoon/evening. I can't stand being cold.
We only leave it on at night when it's freezing.

Rio18 · 13/12/2018 14:35

According to my Tado thermostat, 19.6 is the average temperature people heat their homes to in my area (south east).

OhFlipMama · 13/12/2018 14:37

18-20

seventhgonickname · 13/12/2018 15:07

Thermostat set at19 for an hour in the morning,at 15 during the day 19 after 4pm and then will tweak it up if it is very cold.It is at 10 at night but the spare room and my room the radiators are switched off.

Limensoda · 13/12/2018 15:33

I'm in my sixties now and feel the cold much more than I used to.
The chill in the house if it's below 15 outside is awful. 20 is the maximum our heating is ever on but we have to keep it above 15 at all times apart from overnight unless it gets to freezing outside.

Flynnshine · 13/12/2018 15:35

20/21 in the day and off overnight... I hate sleeping when it's too hot.

Sometimes if I am working from home and have been sat still for a while I might switch it to 22... but only for a bit then it goes back to 20/21

anniehm · 13/12/2018 15:41

19 when we are home during the day, minimum/frost stat set to 12 (never triggers)

Cheesenacho123 · 13/12/2018 15:49

19-21. In summer the thermostat is off always because the house holds the 20-24.c from the heat of the day. In winter I put it on 21.c at most when it feels chilly then I have it set to switch off through the day at different times and completely off from midnight until 6am.

SpamChaudFroid · 13/12/2018 15:51

About 18 during the day and off at night. I like to sleep with practically an easterly wind blowing through the house. Snug as as a bug under the duvet though. I also have a Devon Rex cat who takes his duties as hot water bottle very seriously.

RomanyRoots · 13/12/2018 15:53

I like it about 20 but that's too hot for the rest of the family.
My ds1 was told by health visitor no more than 20 for their new born.

Kismetjayn · 13/12/2018 15:55

I miss heating. Our boiler is broken :(

KayM2 · 13/12/2018 15:58

Really interesting. esp as I have just been caught up with after 18 months of estimated bills, and I have some biggies to pay for 6 months. I used to set the thermostat to 20, and 18 over night ( I sleep badly and am often up for hours in the night.)

Now it is 18 in the day and 16.5 in the night, and I am taking time to get used to it! I'm in my 70s .

knittingdad · 13/12/2018 16:00

The baby thermometer we were given in our Bounty box back in the day had ~18C as the "just right" temperature.

This winter somehow we've adjusted to 16 being warm enough during the day (and off at night), but I'm not convinced it will last. If the snow starts it will break us and we'll want the reassurance of warmer temperatures, I'm sure.

hiddeneverythin · 13/12/2018 16:03

19/20. I have young kids so that's cozy for them

itsgoodtobehome · 13/12/2018 16:05

About 23 if I move the thermostat, 18 if DH does it. It's constantly up and down, so probably somewhere in the middle!!

knittingdad · 13/12/2018 16:06

@Firesuit I think this thread is misleading, people are giving what they set their thermostat to. In most cases that doesn't tell you much about what temperature their home is. My thermostat is set to 18, but that achieves a temperature of 22, measured on a separate digital thermometer.

That's a fair enough point, but the temperature varies quite a bit in the different rooms of the house. It's normally cooler by the thermostat, except for a couple of places where it isn't.

Do you get an even temperature?

Mia184 · 13/12/2018 16:11

I like it cozy (23°) in the living room and cool in the bed room (16-17°). I even open the windows in the bed room for 20 minutes before I go to bed and it is freezing at night at the moment. For some reason, I get extremely sweaty when I sleep in a warm room.

I remember when I was a child, we spent a week around Christmas time at my grand parents. They didn’t have any radiators, just an oven in the living room. It was about -10° at night and my brother and I slept beneath the roof. My grandmother had put copper hot-water bottles into our beds earlier. So it was warm enough but also very cool. Whenever we exhaled, our breath turned to steam. It was wonderful!

grasspigeons · 13/12/2018 16:14

If I am just sat still on the sofa I like it at 22
If I am pottering around the house I like it at 20
At night we don't have heating on and the window is open so it gets pretty cold sometimes.
