To ask what you think a normal house temperature is?

DH grew up with parents who have the thermostat set to 23 degrees day and night - to me this is swelteringly hot, and I sleep without covers on (or the window open if I can get away with it!). My parents, on the other hand, set theirs to 18 or 19 degrees during the day, and 16 degrees at night.

DH prefers a warmer house, I prefer a cooler one, so we have frequent heating wars!

What do you consider a 'normal' temperature for a UK home?

Usually in pretty tight and keep it about 18 in the day and 16 at night when everyone is asleep.

At the moment I'm pregnant and having issues with the cold air setting off post-nasal drip and making me vomit (yummy!) so along with having to get up every couple of hours in the night I unfortunately need the temperature to be at least 19 overnight so I'm not vomiting constantly. I tend to have the house at about 20 or 21 in the day (when we're in it) because I'm feeling the cold more this year.

daisypond · 13/12/2018 12:38

No heating on overnight. It's on at about 18 degrees between 6am and 8.30 am. It comes on at the same temperature at about 4pm-8.30pm. It's generally not on in the day, even though there's people at home then.

UhYeahISureHopeItDoes · 13/12/2018 12:38

Early 20's is normal but mine has been set to 26 since Winter started. Windows are open on the latch though to keep the air flowing so it doesn't get stuffy.

MacarenaFerreiro · 13/12/2018 12:41

Total madness. You are, in effect, heating the outside.

UhYeahISureHopeItDoes · 13/12/2018 12:46

Mac I'll get an air conditioner for the garden to cool it back down then Smile wondered why the gnomes were sweating

Our heating is on for about an hour ready to get up in the morning, and for an hour around 5pm. The thermostat is set for 23oC in the hall, but that's purely hypothetical as it's naturally cool and north facing so rarely gets to that.

We use the 1 hour boost button when needed. The house is modern with fairly small rooms. We've done a lot to cut draughts so once heated, it tends to keep heat well.

There's a themometer in the lounge. 16-18 can be OK if I'm active in the daytime. Relaxing in the evening 21+. We have a log burner so heat the lounge off that, but it works well as a storage heater through the chimney breast and helps to keep the core of the house warm. It's fuelled on scrap pallet wood. March-November, I can often get good heat through the house in the daytime off the conservatory.

My nose dribbles relentlessly if I'm cold and no amount of jumpers and thick socks makes any difference. Walking around outside isn't so bad because my body is pumping the warm blood around my extremities, but around the house it is difficult to warm back up if I'm too cold. When camping, I have to pull my head inside the sleeping bag to breathe warm air.

Walked in from outside with freezing feet from the biting wind despite walking socks and stout shoes. 16 in the lounge so colder elsewhere. Heating now on and feet slowly defrosting despite the second pair of thick socks. Already in fleece trousers and thick fluffy jumper on top of my fitness clothes.

SomeBigBaubles · 13/12/2018 12:49

Heating never goes on in the daytime, I wear layers in the day if I'm cold, just a habit from my skint days, any warmer feels uncomfortable now. I like fresh air too so windows always being opened - seems daft to have warmess escaping!

I will put it on in the evening for an hour or two.

And no heating on at night.

I sound scroogey. Blush

Penners99 · 13/12/2018 12:50

Anything over 18 and I am too warm

Woooman · 13/12/2018 12:53

Our thermostat is always set to 21 during the colder months. The windows in our house are terrible though (and obviously need replacing) and they let so much cold air in that sometimes we have to do an hours blast at 23 degrees. I hate the house being warm/hot when I sleep but recently I've woken a few times in the night due to the house being like a furnace after "someone" turned the heating up to 27 degrees before they came up to bed!!! He says that he does it because the children will get cold in the night and develop colds (yes I know there is so much wrong with this train of thought and he won't listen to reason). So we seem to have night time heating wars going on!

museumum · 13/12/2018 12:53

We have 18 for daytime up and about doing stuff.

20 for sitting still like watching a film or working at the computer for hours.

14ish overnight since we had kids but used to be 10-12 when just dh and I.

CaptainCarp · 13/12/2018 12:54

Heating is set to 16 overnight & during the day if not home. 18 when in the house maybe 20 if not well & can't get warm. We expect to have to wear a jumper inside in the winter whereas I know other people that want to be in just t-shirt

BlackeyedGruesome · 13/12/2018 12:56

I have no heating on at present, and have not had any on since last night... the temperature here is.... 17 degrees c.

Andromeida59 · 13/12/2018 12:57

If it's not too cold outside, our thermostat is 14-14.5. If it's really cold out it will be on 15-16 max.

KittyClaus · 13/12/2018 12:58

19 as standard, if I’m feeling chilly I’ll sneak it up to 20 so DH the human oven doesn’t notice.

BestBeforeYesterday · 13/12/2018 12:59

I think in winter your house should be at the temperature where it's comfortable to wear a nice woollen jumper. And in the summer it should be at the temperature where it's comfortable to wear a t-shirt. Not, as in so many houses (especially in countries where aircon is standard), the other way round.
Spot on!

TheOrangeOwl · 13/12/2018 13:05

Our Gro Eggs say usually around 21-24 degrees, and I am often a bit warm, but we have pets that need a warmer environment. Otherwise, 18 degrees is perfect for me.

DonaldDucksTowel · 13/12/2018 13:05

Wow I’m starting to see why my energy bills are much higher than average
I’d absolutely turn blue in some of your houses! ❄️

nokidshere · 13/12/2018 13:15

It's a war here with the heating. I'm home all day with the heating turned off and the windows open regardless of the weather.

I turn it on at about 4pm to warm up for dh and DS coming home because they are always cold despite wearing plenty of clothes including socks and jumpers. From that point I would leave it on for the evening at 20 but they keep turning it up and then I feel suffocated. Dh turns it up more as he goes to bed Confused I turn it off before he even gets to the top of the stairs.

We have been arguing about it every winter for years so can't see it changing anytime soon, and dh is about to retire so will be here in the day too and will want it on.

Limensoda · 13/12/2018 13:18

At the moment, my heating comes on at 19 deg at 6.30 a.m.
After 8 a.m. it's on 18 or 19 if we're in or 15 if we are out.
Only have it on throughout the night if weather is freezing and have it at 15.

Thurmanmurman · 13/12/2018 13:55

20-22 for me. I refuse to sit there wearing an extra jumper in my own house!

Donnnerbox · 13/12/2018 14:00

Why have the heating on if you're not even in the house?!! Let alone to 16 degrees. Madness.
Climate change is a massive massive issue. So why not wear a thermal vest, a woolly jumper and woolly socks? A hot water bottle and a decent duvet at night, and you don't need the heating on at all then.

Elfinablender · 13/12/2018 14:03

20 -22c during the day but the heating goes off at night. Well, technically, it would kick in when it dropped to 16c but there are only a few nights a year when that's an issue.

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 13/12/2018 14:07

20 - 21 is the bare minimum for me to feel comfortable. I am often chilly at that temperature though, I prefer 22-23. Then 17 overnight.

We actually have the thermostat set to 19 though, because it is in the very coldest part of the house. When that gets to temperature, it is toasty warm elsewhere, and I love it!

TwiceMagic · 13/12/2018 14:09

I need to sort mine. It’s set to 18C (6.30-8.30 and 5.00-10.30), and to not go below 10C during the day and at night. It’s usually not warm enough and sometimes bloody freezing!

Llanali · 13/12/2018 14:09

We just put an hour’s worth of heating on in the evening if it feels cold.... we don’t heat the house during the day unless at home over the weekend and it’s baltic- think 0-2 degrees or lower.

It’s been 2/3 degrees here over night the past few nights, we have just pressed the button for an hour each evening around 7pm. I’d say the house is around 14 degrees and we warm it to 16/17? It’s not a money thing as such, we just have blankets and jumpers.
