To ask what you think a normal house temperature is?

DH grew up with parents who have the thermostat set to 23 degrees day and night - to me this is swelteringly hot, and I sleep without covers on (or the window open if I can get away with it!). My parents, on the other hand, set theirs to 18 or 19 degrees during the day, and 16 degrees at night.

DH prefers a warmer house, I prefer a cooler one, so we have frequent heating wars!

What do you consider a 'normal' temperature for a UK home?

Hawaii. Obviously. Anything below Honalulu is akin to that ice ring around Saturn.

Firesuit · 13/12/2018 16:20

I definitely have different temperatures in different rooms, downstairs must be one degree cooler, out of upstairs rooms one bedroom is warmer than the rest of the house and one cooler.

I have a normal analogue thermostat that doesn't even have markings more frequent than every five degrees, I'm not convinced the markings were ever intended to be an accurate indicator of target temperature, they're just a rough guide to get you started, with your actual desired temperature being achieved by trial and error.

Bubblysqueak · 13/12/2018 16:56

18-20 during the day, depending on what we're doing and 18 at night.
My friend has just moved back from Oz and her's is set at 30 and she's still cold!

Branleuse · 13/12/2018 17:08

I like it at 19 or 20.

above that its getting a bit warm, I do not like it below 18

Cocolepew · 13/12/2018 17:21

21.5 it comes on at 3 and goes off at 10, then on at 6.20 for an hour in the morning.
If I'm at home and it's particularly cold I will switch it on.

1mum1kid · 13/12/2018 17:50

20 in the morning, 6.30am to 7.30am.
20 in the evening, 4pm to 9.30pm.
Off all night.

EleanorShellstropper · 13/12/2018 17:51

I know I should probably put the heating on when my fingers seize up and I can see my breath Grin

I like things cold. It's very easy to warm up with a blanket but much harder to cool yourself. The kids have lovely warm dressing gowns and slippers and very rarely complain about the house temperature.

I put the heating on before bedtime, so their rooms are warm, and in the new year will probably have it on a timer in the morning, but I'm loathed to heat the house when it's not necessary. (and I work from home).

19lottie82 · 13/12/2018 17:53

21 in the evening then down to 18 overnight.

FuzzyCustard · 13/12/2018 17:55

We can't afford heating so our house varies between 4 and 12 degrees in the winter. It's a bit parky. It reaches 18 degrees in May,.

SpamChaudFroid · 13/12/2018 17:55

I did try leaving it on 15 constantly through the winter a few years ago. The bill that quarter wasn't a great deal more.

Raindancer411 · 13/12/2018 18:04

Ours is a 1928 house with void under the floor so cold in the winter.

I usually have a min of 18 at night and in the day depending on if I get chilly, it can be around 20-21

Bunnymumma · 13/12/2018 18:04

15 across the board and we light the wood burner if chilly.

MongerTruffle · 13/12/2018 18:07

25 degrees in the day, 21 at night Blush

Eifla · 13/12/2018 18:07

None during the day as I’m not there, house is cold when I get home so I put it up to 20 during the evening, from about 6-11pm. Turn it off at night as don’t need it, prefer a cold bedroom and a heated underblanket.

At the weekends I usually put it on 18 when I get up and leave it on that for the day, maybe a bit higher if particularly cold in the evening.

Titsywoo · 13/12/2018 18:07

I have it set at 18 during the winter daytime, I turn it up to 20 (21 max) if it's getting chilly, overnight it is set to 13 but it's rare for it to drop below 17 as the house is very well insulated. 23 would have me stripping off definitely.

brizzledrizzle · 13/12/2018 18:08

Without heating ours is usually 14 degrees at this time of year, I heat it to 18.

Emptyspace · 13/12/2018 18:10

21 in the winter but off at night. When it comes on in the morning at 6am I wake up too hot and switch it off.

Mominatrix · 13/12/2018 18:16

Depends on the day of the week.

Weekday (term time): 22 from 5-8, off until 4, back at 22 until 10pm, off at night.

Weekend (and always when kids on holiday): 22 from 5-11pm, off at night

Still feels too cold in the middle of winter, so gas fire is also on in the living room from 6pm until 11pm.

Cerseilannisterinthesnow · 13/12/2018 18:29

Set to 18 of an evening, 15 overnight as it’s an old farm cottage built of sandstone and even though it’s doile glazed and roof insulated it can get quite cold overnight, so boiler does maintain that temp overnight and then doesn’t work as hard trying to heat the house back up in the morning at least that’s my thinking anyway!

Cerseilannisterinthesnow · 13/12/2018 18:29

Oh and once the heating switches off when we leave for work etc the thermostat is set for 14 but I usually light the fire once I get home

LittleMissCantbebothered · 13/12/2018 18:34

During the day - 17.5.
At night - 15.5

mando12345 · 13/12/2018 18:34

I think thermostats aren't always accurate before with our old thermostat we used to have it on at 21 when home during the day, off at night.
We have a new thermostat (in exactly the same position) and it stays at 19 during the day, it feels the same to us. We're wearing the same amount of layers. So obviously one of our thermostats wasn't calibrated accurately.

Cachailleacha · 13/12/2018 18:37

18 to get up and dressed in the morning, and in the evening from after work until bed when we are mostly sitting. 16 on weekend days when home. Off overnight.

Emptyspace · 13/12/2018 18:38

My house does warm up very quickly so I like it at 21 to get hot then back to 18.

3WildOnes · 13/12/2018 18:43

I only have my heating on on the ground floor. It is on constant, 16 overnight (but hasn’t dipped below 17 yet downstairs so hasn’t clicked on) 18 in the day and 21 for an hour in the morning and in the evening. The heating is never on upstairs and I keep my window open. I have a goose down duvet and never feel cold at night sleeping naked.
