To ask what you think a normal house temperature is?

DH grew up with parents who have the thermostat set to 23 degrees day and night - to me this is swelteringly hot, and I sleep without covers on (or the window open if I can get away with it!). My parents, on the other hand, set theirs to 18 or 19 degrees during the day, and 16 degrees at night.

DH prefers a warmer house, I prefer a cooler one, so we have frequent heating wars!

What do you consider a 'normal' temperature for a UK home?

Well, I'd say that early twenties is pretty normal...however, that is also waaaay too hot for me! 20 is about the limit for me, any hotter and I start stripping off!

Madeline88 · 13/12/2018 09:50

Early twenties. But my partner runs hot so it’s a constant battle to keep the house warm!

GOODCAT · 13/12/2018 09:51

18 or 19

GreenEggsHamandChips · 13/12/2018 09:54

16-20

17 tucked under a blanket. 20 when your ill. 16 at night. Otherwise somewhere between the two

Oddsocksandmeatballs · 13/12/2018 09:55

18° in the evening, 12° overnight, and 14° during the day but if I am home in the day I use the fire to keep the living room warmer. The windows in the bedroom and bathroom are always open a tad too.

Wooooooooaaaaaaaahhhhhhh · 13/12/2018 09:55

I rarely turn the thermostat above 19 in the day and it’s always warm. At night it gets turned down to 15 but I’ve only known it switch on a couple of times.

HavelockVetinari · 13/12/2018 09:56

@GreenEggsHamandChips clearly you and I should set up home together. That is my perfect house!

17-18 during the day, 14-16 at night.

Anything over 20 is bonkers, unless you’ve got someone elderly or unwell in the house.

HavelockVetinari · 13/12/2018 09:56

@Oddsocksandmeatballs you can move in too.

Early twenties for us, I would be fine colder but my husband and the children prefer hotter, so that's what we go with. I am fine with cold then a fire/one room heated, they expect it to be reasonably warm in most parts of the house. We are lucky to live in a relatively modern house (last 30 years built) so the warmth stays in the home with a new boiler. With old boilers and with Victorian or old houses, there's no hope of keeping the house itself warm.

Orlande · 13/12/2018 09:57

I like it around 19 in the day, 15 at night but actually it doesn't often get that cold.

Patchworksack · 13/12/2018 09:57

Our thermostat is set to 19 during the day, heating off at night and it will drop below that but we all have snuggly duvets. My husband is never cold (and would never put the heating on) and I always am, so this is a compromise!

Celebelly · 13/12/2018 09:58

Thermostat is never above 20. 23 would be awful. I actually have radiator off in bedroom as I like it cool: it's usually around 16 in there, sometimes a bit less. Rest of the house is usually 17/18ish during day and a bit less overnight.

hammeringinmyhead · 13/12/2018 09:58

About 19 for me and 17 at night. We have a newborn though so it's 20 all the time at the moment.

Seeline · 13/12/2018 09:58

Our thermostat is at 18. Can be a bit chilly for me as I work from home and can be sitting for long periods. I have a big cardy!
no idea what night time temp is as heating goes off 10 - 6am unless it is really cold and pipes might freeze.

dippledorus · 13/12/2018 09:59

I don’t know 😂😱 ,y thermostat for the heating is in the hall. It’s at 18. But I warm the room I’m in so I don’t know what the actual temperature is.

No heat on during the night at all and the heating comes on at half 6 to warm the bedroom (I turn the radiator on when I come up to bed and turn the living room rad off)

MyArris · 13/12/2018 09:59

20 day. 7 at night as you're under a duvet so what's the point? Plus the combo wakes me up if it kicks in.

dancemom · 13/12/2018 09:59

20-21 for me, I put it up to 22 if im feeling cold but it gets to warm quickly.

However im cold blooded and like it toasty!

18 in The day, 16 at night.

To study or do office work remaining stationary at a desk a bit warmer allows greater productivity, but studying at home an over warm environment makes me sleepy, and when being more active doing housework or generally moving around cooler is also better. Snuggling on the sofa blankets are good. We light a wood fire in the evening which is cozy but it makes me sleepy!

TheBananaStand2 · 13/12/2018 10:01

Apparently (according to New Scientist) we get used to higher indoor temperatures, then we keep our heating on later into the year because we expect our houses to be extra warm. It’s a slippery (er, upwards) slope. Having said that my house is usually 22 degrees and I’m addicted to heating. Bad bad bad.

NineNine · 13/12/2018 10:01

Thermostat is set to 20 (during the day, no heating overnight), but is in the coldest part of the house. If all the doors are left open and the whole house is the same temp then it feels cold to me.

In my defence I have just returned from living in a tropical country where our air conditioning was set to 28.

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 13/12/2018 10:02

Our house is constantly 24. Any lower and I am uncomfortable; I don’t ever want to live in such a way that to warm up I need to put layers on because then I am never truly warm.

WorraLiberty · 13/12/2018 10:02

20 during the day but we turn it off at night.
