To ask what you think a normal house temperature is?

DH grew up with parents who have the thermostat set to 23 degrees day and night - to me this is swelteringly hot, and I sleep without covers on (or the window open if I can get away with it!). My parents, on the other hand, set theirs to 18 or 19 degrees during the day, and 16 degrees at night.

DH prefers a warmer house, I prefer a cooler one, so we have frequent heating wars!

What do you consider a 'normal' temperature for a UK home?

You can get used to 23.
As my name suggests, I'm in a warm place. It's winter, and getting to 25/26 outside. It gets into the 40s in the summer, so this is cool. I've had jeans on, but many are wearing wooly hats, jumpers, coats. For people acclimitised to it, it's cool.
So those with thermostats turned high are probably used to it, and would struggle with it much cooler - however good it would be for the environment.
My first winter here, I was boiling. Now, 4 years later, I too can be found throwing on a cardi to do the school run at 20C first thing! The body is remarkably adaptable!

Confusedbeetle · 13/12/2018 11:43

set to 20 in the morning and evening and off at night

talktomegently · 13/12/2018 11:45

19 or 20 for the house, heat rises are warms the bedrooms. We have a log burner in the lounge for extra heat in the evenings.

megletthesecond · 13/12/2018 11:46

23 day.
20 night.

OutPinked · 13/12/2018 11:47

20-24 is our average in winter and that’s how we’re all comfortable. It never dips below 18.

MadameJosephine · 13/12/2018 11:48

19 during the day but off at 10pm, I hate being too warm at night

Deadbudgie · 13/12/2018 11:49

We have the heating on boast when it drops below 16 in the day the thermostat in the hall is 18.5 so switches off when it reaches that. We have a log burner in the lounge but if it hits 19 we open all the doors and windows as too hot. Heating on frost protect at night. I used to be a 21degrees girl but slowly reduced heat. Our daily winter spend per the smart meter was over £10,now it’s about £5.

WhoKnewBeefStew · 13/12/2018 11:50

19 degrees during the day, then it goes off about 8.30 until 6am, I can’t abide having the heating on whilst I’m in bed. My dh is one of those hot people so it’s like sleeping next to a radiator at the best of times. The dc have thick quilts and pjs on during the winter

PoisonousSmurf · 13/12/2018 11:51

We have thermometers in each room and the radiators have thermostats. We use calor gas as we are not on a gas main, so have to be careful.
During the day the heating is off, so it can drop to 15c on a cold day, but in the evening the heating is on from 4pm for 5 hours and that gets it up to 19c upstairs and 18c downstairs.
If we have the log fire on, it can get nice and toasty at 23c.
The heating is NEVER on after 9pm, so in the morning (especially frosty ones), it can drop to 13c downstairs!
The heating is then on from 6am until 9am to get it up to 17c.
I only air the house when the heating is off, otherwise it's a waste of fuel.

gardengrass321 · 13/12/2018 11:55

We have ours on 18 for when we get up for work which turns off in the morning and then it's set to get to 21 for when we get in from work so it's nice and toasty!

Christmasgone2018 · 13/12/2018 11:55

21-23 in the day in the cold weather. If money was no object I'd have it at about 25 as it's an old house and I feel the cold. Off at night no matter how cold as I just couldn't sleep with heating on
A cold house is always unwelcoming and I'd hate anyone visiting to feel less than comfortable

TheGhostOfYou · 13/12/2018 12:00

We don't have a thermostat but according to our smart meter the temperature during the day is usually 22 degrees when the heating is on low all day, it's off at night.. Right now it's only 16, not sure why as the heating is on, all I know is it's bloody freezing!

Luvacuppatea · 13/12/2018 12:01

18 or 19duringbthe day, then turned off overnight.

Bringbackbertha · 13/12/2018 12:04

This is why it depends on what parents do with babies. They can't regulate heat so if they are wrapped up always kept warm they will always need to be warm and vice versa.

20 is a good temp for us but we have a conservatory that looses alot of heat.

itsbetterthanabox · 13/12/2018 12:07

21 when in the house but up.
18 when in bed overnight.

HopeGarden · 13/12/2018 12:10

I prefer the heating set at 18 during the day and off overnight.

DH likes it hot. He’ll turn the temperature on the thermostat right up and leave it there. I woke up sweltering the other night because he’d turned the temperature up to 28 after I’d gone to bed and left it on overnight Angry

Porla · 13/12/2018 12:13

18 between 6-8am
18 between 3-9pm

14 the rest of the time

MacarenaFerreiro · 13/12/2018 12:14

20C is normal room temperature for me.

23 I would find baking hot - the thermostat in the US rental property we had last year was set to 73F which is 22.7C and I found it unbearable. (And couldn't alter it as there were signs saying not to touch it on pain of death).

At night we don't have the heating on at all. The central thermostat is set to 13C so if the temperature falls below that it'll click on, but I don;t think it ever has. Not even when we felt the full force of the Beast from the East last year.

I hate being cold. But stuffily hot, uncomfortable houses are just as bad.

WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream · 13/12/2018 12:16

Always on 22 degrees here. It's a cold house and still doesn't feel that warm especially upstairs

GreenHillOpposite · 13/12/2018 12:18

Those who barely have the heating on at night, how come your head and nose is not freezing ? I had to get up and put the heating on the other night , because my nose felt like it was going to freeze and fall off !!

I like a cold bedroom, and ideally would have the bedroom windows open at night all year round. So I definitely feel the cold air, but I think I just like burrowing down in to the covers. I prefer to sleep naked but I find putting some socks on keeps the rest of me so warm that I get too hot.

babysharkah · 13/12/2018 12:21

@HotInWinter I used to live in ME ad have jumper and jeans on in 70 degrees. You're totally right.

Lovemusic33 · 13/12/2018 12:21

I don’t get cold at night, I sleep naked, I’m single so I don’t have anyone to keep me warm. I often get hot at night and can’t sleep if the heating is on.
Since having the house insulated it holds heat quite well at night, the heating goes off at 10pm and comes back on at 7am, i then turn it off for most of the day.

Donnnerbox · 13/12/2018 12:24

About 16, but it rarely gets that warm. And no heating at night.

mrsoutnumbered · 13/12/2018 12:28

Thermostat is set at 21. I'm in a newish build and it must be well insulated as it's never on for long.

Heating is off between 8pm and 6am, don't see the point having it on when the kids are in bed. I just put my dressing gown on if I get cold!

Wherearemymarbles · 13/12/2018 12:33

Not sure we could even get ours to 23 when its cold outside!
19 during day if we are in and 20 in the evening and 14 over night unless we have guests and its freezing (the spare room at the top of the house has been know to drop to 10 if its sub zero outside)
