To ask what you think a normal house temperature is?

DH grew up with parents who have the thermostat set to 23 degrees day and night - to me this is swelteringly hot, and I sleep without covers on (or the window open if I can get away with it!). My parents, on the other hand, set theirs to 18 or 19 degrees during the day, and 16 degrees at night.

DH prefers a warmer house, I prefer a cooler one, so we have frequent heating wars!

What do you consider a 'normal' temperature for a UK home?

We keep our house about 17, DH/DS and I all hate the heat. Our Celtic blooded, pale skinned redhead teen DD lives in onesies and cosy jumpers to compensate.

DrWashout · 13/12/2018 10:29

Just because someone sets the thermostat to 23, doesn't necessarily mean the heating system can sustain that temp.

Ours lives as 17-19 in the daytime and 14 at night, but we turn it up to 20 of an evening, if we don't put the logburner on. We are quick to turn it on in the winter too - I hate competitive refusal to heat your home until halfway through winter. On our deathbeds, no one will be saying "I wish I'd managed to keep the heating off until 1st November instead of cracking on the 13th of October".

Buggeritimgettingup · 13/12/2018 10:29

16-18 during day and off at night, if kids are cold in t shirt in December they can put a bloody jumper on! Same as weirdo husband who while everyone at the beach was sun bathing in 25 degrees (kids in pamts/swimsuits) was sat with his fleece zipped up moaning he was cold 😂 he is from south Africa though so I'll let him off

Knittink · 13/12/2018 10:30

18-19 in the daytime, off at night. I can't bear having the heating on at night, or even having it come on before I get up, so I switch it on when I get up in the morning.

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 13/12/2018 10:31

18-19 in the morning and evening, off in the day and off at night. It's an old house so no point keeping it on when we're at work/school, it doesn't stay warm. We snuggle under teddy fleece throws if we feel cold. It saves a fortune on my gas bill.

silkpyjamasallday · 13/12/2018 10:31

We have it between 17-18 during the day maybe a little warmer in the evening but no more than 20, and turn the heating off entirely at night, it hasn't dropped below 14 yet.

maxthemartian · 13/12/2018 10:31

23 during the day and 20 overnight but I'm not convinced of the accuracy of the thermostat.

Pinkblanket · 13/12/2018 10:32

Whatever people want it at. It's hardly inconceivable that different people find different temperatures comfortable!

Bobbybobbins · 13/12/2018 10:34

18 in the day, 19/20 for cold evenings and then off overnight though we have oil filled radiators in the kids' rooms

PoorMansPeppaPig · 13/12/2018 10:35

19 is toasty in our house.... 17/16 feels a bit chilly. We have no heating at all overnight as I cant stand being hot in the night and would much rather cosy up in pjs and blankets than be sweaty because of heating on.

Huntawaymama · 13/12/2018 10:36

I don't have a thermostat but go off our gro egg. I like it at 20/21 during the day. We have the heating on in the morning, at about 330 I light the fire and that carries some heat into the bedrooms. When I go to bed at 8/830 (with a baby) it's 19 and when I wake up its 16/17. It feels bloody freezing when I wake up to breastfeed during the night. My parents and in laws talk about having ice on the inside of their windows and mil had ice between sheets of her bed but tbh I don't feel people should have to live like that these days

TurquoiseDress · 13/12/2018 10:36

For me, 18 at the max!

DH wanders around in t-shirts during the winter and cranks up the heating which drives me mad!

The other morning, I woke up sweating and saw that he had put the heating up before he went to bed- up to 25 fucking degrees!!

It was about 8 degrees outside

We do have a bit of a silent battle- I turn the heating down/off and he comes along and cranks it up.

I tell him to put a jumper on if he's cold.

We also argue about me opening windows in the day, even when it has been cold & the heating is on- I think it's important to air the home out, the windows get all covered in condensation and we've noticed damp etc which is a concern (in rented at the moment). But this one is for another thread I imagine!

YANBU!

redsummershoes · 13/12/2018 10:38

whatever temperature is comfortable.
our thermostat is set to 21 when we are in house and 15 during night and when out of the house.
though it's only 21 degrees in the smallest room, the living room is about 19. just comfortable with a cardigan.

tillytrotter1 · 13/12/2018 10:38

Not on during the day, set at about 14 in case it gets really cold then up to about 17/18 in the evening, off all night. I think I would suffocate at 24!

bridgetreilly · 13/12/2018 10:40

I think in winter your house should be at the temperature where it's comfortable to wear a nice woollen jumper. And in the summer it should be at the temperature where it's comfortable to wear a t-shirt. Not, as in so many houses (especially in countries where aircon is standard), the other way round.

Enb76 · 13/12/2018 10:45

If my heating worked it would be around 18 but as it doesn't we're at 15 in the house unless the woodturning stove is going where we get to a roasting 22.

Dermymc · 13/12/2018 10:45

17 here from 630-730 then off until it comes on from 5-8pm. Occasionally turn it on during the day at weekends.

CatLadyToddlerMother · 13/12/2018 10:46

Mine is 20 in the day and 18 at night, but I have been known to switch it off in the daytime so I might need to turn it down a little

MarklahMarklah · 13/12/2018 10:48

Ours is 17-19 all the time.

OhTheRoses · 13/12/2018 10:51

Generally 18, higher if it's v v cold. We have zones so bedrooms always cooler but timed to increase in the early mornings. It's controllable from my phone.

Possumfish · 13/12/2018 10:52

During the day 15. Evening max of 19. During the night off - no matter how cold it gets. :)

AllTakenSoRubbishUsername · 13/12/2018 10:52

We have it on at about 20/21 during the day and it goes off at night, otherwise we would be hot under the duvets (unless it's literally snowing outside) and we have it come on early in the morning so it's warm when we get out of bed.

Lovemusic33 · 13/12/2018 10:54

My heating only goes on for a couple hours a day (hour in the morning and a hour in the evening) unless it’s a really cold day and I’m at home all day. Heating goes off at night and comes on 5 minutes before I get up. Usually set it to 23 ish.

Ollivander84 · 13/12/2018 10:56

No heating overnight
Between 16-19 depending how cold I am/it is outside/what I'm doing

Notgoodatchoosingnames · 13/12/2018 10:57

We have the same wars in our house. DH & DSC want it warm (Hot) and have the thermostat at 22 (DSC will sit with blankets round them shivering dramatically but then seem to be wearing shorts and tshirts!!!) and myself and DS5 are warm and would rather 19. DS often sleeps topless as he can't stand being too hot! Don't get me started with DPILs who have found the thermostat and often turn it to 23 + when they are visiting!!
