To feel absolutely sick to my stomach about this story

Clearly I’m not unreasonable. I can completely see how this could happen.

What they can do to prevent it happening again, in a time of staff shortages and pressures...I can’t answer that.

That poor, poor woman and her poor family.

I knew what this was before I even opened the thread OP. I was going to post the same.

My DD is 7 weeks today and that's not where I had her but could have been. Close enough anyway. She's local to me although I don't know her. Absolutely devastated tonight and cannot get it out my head.

So she basically went to visit the neonatal unit, never returned then was found collapsed after 5 hours.

How did no one see her?!

Suffering headaches since before the birth. Death not suspicious. I think there's more to the story than meets the eye.

Apparently it was an unused area of the hospital, a stair way at the back of that area. If she had some sort of haemorrhage she would have been confused as well.

There is more to the story - she had preeclampsia hence the premature baby and the headaches.
I suspect she might have developed eclampsia after birth. I hope they investigate for medical negligence.
This is very sad. And scary.

Yes, I'm sure they will Eggplants. It is shocking. Not the same situation, but it reminds me of that suicide at Cheddar, where no-one noticed the mother just walking out in her hospital gown.

What a terrible thing for the family and the baby.

This further confirms that mothers and babies should not be separated. The hospitals need to be redesigned so that they can receive care side by side. I know it’s financially not feasible, but when remodels happen because facilities are worn out, change should happen.

This is a relatively new hospital. My DC were born in the old one and my sister's youngest was born in the new one. There are 10 months between them so reckon it was opened in early 2002.

It's not even possible in the case of some babies who need to be in a NICU at a paediatric facility. What this confirms is most likely that the mother needed far more careful monitoring than she got postpartum. It's all too common that postpartum care of mothers is the bastard stepchild of the NHS and women are often left with little to no care following birth.

My DS2 was in neonatal &
I can easily see how this could have happened. My notes constantly say ‘mum NICU’ - but this was never actually checked up, it just assumed because I wasn’t in my room.

So very very sad. The pressures of the NHS is so far gone.

That wee baby boy who will never get to know his mum first hand. Sad

That's absolutely terrible bad luck that she wandered into an unused area Sad, I wonder if hospitals should lock them and only give access to staff?

A lot of hospitals have pretty terrible postnatal care, it sounds like she had some preexisting conditions as well, it's a recipe for a tragedy.

How long are parents allowed to stay in the neonatal unit? As it makes sense if the midwife didn't really notice she was gone if she expected her to spend time with her DS.
