Should I take DD to a&e?

DD, aged 2, woke up at 5.30 complaining her tummy hurt. She has been sick more times than I can count since then, and can't keep water down. It's bright yellow/green bile. I phoned 111 and got an emergency gp appointment. GP said that it might be norovirus, albeit with unusual presentation as DD has no diarrhoea. Also the rest of the family is fine and no known outbreaks at nursery. Suggested diaoralite and an ice lolly. Both chucked straight back up after less than five mins.

It will be 24 hours since DD drank and kept it down at 6pm, and 24 hours since she went for a wee at 6.30pm (early bedtime last night). She hasn't eaten all day. She is floppy, not talking to me normally or answering me verbally, just gesturing. She won't sit up under her own steam and her head is flopping over. She is awake. Just not herself at all. No temperature according to GP but she feels warm to me.

I rang back 111 as per gps suggestion and I'm waiting for a clinician to call back, I don't know if I can wait much longer! Freaking out as this is so not like her!

I should hold off going to a&e right??? Talk me down!!!!

DD has this. Vomited on the hour every hour for four days and nights. I took her to the GP twice who said noro and just to sit it out. Eventually called 111 who called an ambulance and she was admitted and onto a drip. It was just a virus but some children get into a cycle of vomiting where they can’t stop and then they are on a downward spiral of dehydration.

I should never have left it that long but the two GP visits made me doubt myself. I’m glad you are at A & E and hopefully this will be just a bug (they said DD actually had gastroenteritis but I don’t know how that differs from any other stomach bug) and it will turn out to be really nasty but limited. DD was right as rain within 12 hours of stopping vomiting.

Hope you are making progress OP.

DirtyCurtains1 · 12/12/2018 19:54

Hope you're both ok OP. You've done brilliantly, stay strong! Thanks

Kittykat93 · 12/12/2018 20:00

Hope she's ok op. In future, any floppiness or unresponsiveness straight to a&e. No hospital will tell you off for checking out a poorly child.

RatRolyPoly · 12/12/2018 20:01

Sending you and your dc warm wishes OP Flowers

Haworthia · 12/12/2018 20:03

Glad you’re in hospital. I would also be very reluctant to take a child with possible norovirus to hospital, but when they’re as unwell as you describe you have no choice. Hope she perks up with some IV fluids.

Sounds like when my DD had intussusception. Beg for a scan. They told me it was gastritis but I knew it wasn't as she couldn't poo or even break wind. Vomit changed from bile to brown feacal vomiting around the 36 hours in mark. She wasn't really straining to vomit, just opening her mouth and out it poured..
everything came up undigested eg ice lolly came up smelling of ice lolly.

Intussusception is when a piece of intestine telescopes inside another, causing a blockage.

ineedwine99 · 12/12/2018 20:08

All the best for your DD OP

FuckOffAndWriteYourOwnArticles · 12/12/2018 20:15

Glad you’re in hospital. Sure, an adult with norovirus doesn’t need to be seen at hospital. But small children can get dehydrated so quickly and then things can really go downhill so you should never ever hesitate.

DS had awful vomiting earlier this year and I was told by 111 to take him to A&E because he hadn’t had a wet nappy in 12 hours.

I hope your DD gets better soon.

KitKat1985 · 12/12/2018 20:16
