Aibu to think it is perfectly fine for a woman to drink beer or cider instead of wine

So I'm more of a beer/cider person than a wine person. Don't get me wrong I love wine it's just not my go to drink. My go to drink is Budweiser, Magners, Stella, old mount cider or orchard thieves.
But anyway the other day I heard a co worker saying how it's not lady like to drink beer or cider and it's a sign of alcoholism.

It took me all my strength to not go Round there and say yeah me having my pint of Magners with around 2.6 units is alcoholism but you drinking that entire 9.8 unit bottle of wine by yourself is completely fine.

So Aibu to think it's ok for a woman to drink beer and cider. Btw this is obviously under safe conditions aka if she's not driving, if she's not gonna put anyone in danger when she drinks it

Is this coworker stuck in the 50s?

IHaveBrilloHair · 12/12/2018 15:55

I only drink lager, I don't like other alcohol and hate wine especially.

LittleScottieDog · 12/12/2018 15:55

I love real ale. It's my drink of choice. Nothing to do with alcoholism. Ignore your colleague.

Oldraver · 12/12/2018 15:56

I cant stand wine, so drink Old Mout, at the moment.

Some people do have odd ideas about wine/upmarket, ladylike...beers/cider not.

Fortunetly I dont care

SoyDora · 12/12/2018 15:57

It’s ok for a woman to drink whatever the hell they want to drink.

TheFaerieQueene · 12/12/2018 15:57

Someone with such ludicrous opinions isn’t worth worrying about.

Galvantula · 12/12/2018 15:57

I love beer and ale too.
Don't feel And more manly when I drink it. 😂

Also love wine but it doesn't make me feel ladylike 🤔

jaseyraex · 12/12/2018 15:57

I HATE wine. Don't like gin, prosecco etc either. Cider is always my drink of choice.

IAmRubbishAtDIY · 12/12/2018 15:58

When I was an alcohol drinker, it was always a pint of bitter for me. And I'm not a) manly or b) alcoholic.

Narya · 12/12/2018 16:01

That's a pretty outdated attitude to women drinking. I have a couple of (female) colleagues who would agree though, and a couple more that think women should only drink beer/cider in half pints Confused

Agree with pp that sticking to wine is no guarantee of being ladylike!

IHaveBrilloHair · 12/12/2018 16:02

Gin tastes like celery and prosecco is vinegar put through the soda stream.

jessstan2 · 12/12/2018 16:02

Of course it is fine. You can drink whatever you want. Who has said otherwise?

coolmum223 · 12/12/2018 16:04

@IHaveBrilloHair I like gin and prosecco but rarely since with gin I only like Bombay and I don't fancy it that often therefore it's not worth all the money. As for prosecco it's nice but I like it only on special occasions like Christmas and New Years since it's a nice champagne alternative

meow1989 · 12/12/2018 16:04

Of course it's fine!

RaiderOfTheKitchenCupboard · 12/12/2018 16:06

If I’m just having a drink (rather than having one with a meal) I’d rather have lager than wine. I mostly drink 0% lager, so don’t think I’m in danger of becoming an alcoholic any time soon.

hooveringhamabeads · 12/12/2018 16:13

I pretty much only drink cider! Wine gets me too pissed too quickly, and I’ve never been that into spirits.

Always a pint too, no messing around with half’s to look ‘ladylike’ Grin

Aquamarine1029 · 12/12/2018 16:13

Your co-worker is a total bellend.

Bestseller · 12/12/2018 16:16

I always drink beer when I'm out. If you have wine people refill your glass and you're never sure how much you've had.

It's just occurred to me that could be why some men prefer women to drink wine.

DaffodilPower · 12/12/2018 16:17

I don't mind a rose wine spritzer, but my go-to is Old Mout. Bollocks to anyone who doesn't like it and thinks I should be drinking girly drinks!

(Stick it in a wine glass for added lady points!)

creamcheeseandlox · 12/12/2018 16:17

My sister in law loves ale/beer etc. Don't think I've ever seen her have a glass of wine. She had a pint of ale in her hand on her 40th last week. She's certainly not an alcoholic. Some people have weird ideas.

Almondio · 12/12/2018 16:18

Anyone else remember being served a pint in a 'lady's glass' back in the day? And by by the day, I mean 1995 not the bloody 1700s. Promptly sent them back and insisted on a proper pint glass. I also recall on occasion not being served a pint, but two dainty halves. Because a woman clearly can't lift a whole pint.

AdamNichol · 12/12/2018 16:18

YANBU - although ladette culture somewhat annexed the visual of the female holding a pint. Time to reclaim it for all women.

Poodles1980 · 12/12/2018 16:18

I only really drink beer. I must be an alcoholic so

Grace212 · 12/12/2018 16:19

your co-worker is in a time slip from centuries ago!

weebarra · 12/12/2018 16:19

I am a craft beer wanker! Although I like wine, my beer of choice is something a Sierra Nevada, Beavertown Gamma Ray etc. I took DH to Buxton for his 40th just to drink beer. Your colleague would hate me!
