Aibu to think it is perfectly fine for a woman to drink beer or cider instead of wine

So I'm more of a beer/cider person than a wine person. Don't get me wrong I love wine it's just not my go to drink. My go to drink is Budweiser, Magners, Stella, old mount cider or orchard thieves.
But anyway the other day I heard a co worker saying how it's not lady like to drink beer or cider and it's a sign of alcoholism.

It took me all my strength to not go Round there and say yeah me having my pint of Magners with around 2.6 units is alcoholism but you drinking that entire 9.8 unit bottle of wine by yourself is completely fine.

So Aibu to think it's ok for a woman to drink beer and cider. Btw this is obviously under safe conditions aka if she's not driving, if she's not gonna put anyone in danger when she drinks it

Your co-worker is a twit.

ginghamstarfish · 12/12/2018 16:21

Bollocks. Why would you care what this person says?

NonaGrey · 12/12/2018 16:22

You co-worker is an idiot.

I would have asked if she genuinely believed that only “nonladylike” women were alcoholics?

Rockmysocks · 12/12/2018 16:23

I love a bud or a cold glass of cider! I've tried a lot of wines that i didn't like at all so reluctant to order something I might not like. I'm female born and have no issues regarding my feminity or caring about what anyone else thinks.

coolmum223 · 12/12/2018 16:50

@NonaGrey she's probably a alcoholic on multiple nights a week she's drinking a bottle of wine herself sometimes opening a second bottle

Your co-worker is talking shite! Nowt wrong with a refreshing cold pint of lager. S/he should try one!

ScreamingValenta · 12/12/2018 16:55

Real ale fan here!

I've thought for a long time that Mumsnet needs a 'beer' emoji - by only having Wine and Gin they're unconsciously furthering the 'beer is unladylike' attitude!

AnotherPidgey · 12/12/2018 16:57

She needs to get with it. Campari and Lemonade is ladylike. Or Babycham.
Grin

scatterbrainedlass · 12/12/2018 17:05

Ignore and drink what you like. I don't really like wine. I went out with a group of mums last night and I wasn't the only one on cider or lager!

UrbaneSprawl · 12/12/2018 17:05

Getting served beer in a pint and not a half was a fight I thought my mum won pretty comprehensively back around 1967. Is your colleague Al Murray, by any chance?

I remember being completely puzzled the first and last time I was offered a “ladies’ glass” (Barnsley, 2010) - I never knew such a thing existed.

Shootingstar20 · 12/12/2018 17:07

Bloody hate wine, nothing tasteful about it. Cider is the go to!

theworldistoosmall · 12/12/2018 17:11

Hot summers day. Nothing beats a cold pint.
And Gin, yuck. Horrible stuff that I am supposed to like because I have a fanny. Walk out on a date because of the gin debate. I wanted Bourbon but because I was female I must have meant Gin as that is what he bought me.

Spudlet · 12/12/2018 17:12

As we all know, only white wine or fruit-based drinks are acceptable for layydeeees.

anniehm · 12/12/2018 17:53

Of course women can drink what the hell they like! My mum is somewhat disapproving of my pint drinking habit (women drink halves) but even she doesn't suggest I drink wine. One of my favourite current photos is my dd in a full length strapless evening dress with a pint of cider!

Knock knock
Hello
Hi it’s the 1950s and we want coolmum223s coworker back
as soon as she’s finished cooking tea for her husband

Ellie56 · 12/12/2018 18:01

Your colleague is talking bollocks.

I love a refreshing lager, especially in summer. I also love rose wine.

Now considering whether it's wine o'clock or Peroni o'clock...

alibongo5 · 12/12/2018 18:05

I am absolutely gobsmacked that anyone is asking this question in the 21st century!

goose1964 · 12/12/2018 18:09

I'm a CAMRA member and if drinking out usually have a pint of either real ale or proper cider, none of the flavoured crap. I rarely have more than a pint a week so I doubt drinking beer makes you an alchie

AmyDowdensLeftLeftShoe · 12/12/2018 18:12

Some of the real ales I drink have much less alcohol in them than a glass of wine.

I drink wine, beer and spirits but mostly drink beer.

Buster72 · 12/12/2018 18:13

Beer is beautiful, but I would have a
Go at anyone with a bottle of bud.
A good German lager or Czech pilsner or even a Samuel Adams is far superior...

LizB62A · 12/12/2018 18:15

I get a similar thing - I can't drink most beers and wines due to allergies, so I stick to scotch and soda.
Single scotch and lots of soda = 1 unit of alcohol
1 large glass of red wine = c. 3 units
1 pint of beer = c. 3 units

So I'm drinking about a third of the alcohol that they are.

But, I'm the alcoholic because "everyone knows that alcoholics don't drink beer or wine"..... grrrr

IamEarthymama · 12/12/2018 18:18

Oh I remember this nonsense back in the day.
It's all part of the pushing of gender stereotypes and capitalism wanting us to believe we must present in certain ways. I hate how being feminine or masculine dictates such things in some people's minds.
I am sure you are laughing at her, though the alcoholic jibe was not kind.
I love a pint of good ale but gluten hates me
So I am a cider drinker these days and love all the varieties of gin. I open red wine if crap has happened and I want to get drunk
But on my death bed when it doesn't matter what my body does in reaction I am planning a pint of Doom Bar or one of the Fab Ales from Samuel Smith or Tiny Rebel!
With crusty bread and lots of butter 🤣

ErrolTheDragon · 12/12/2018 18:50

YABU to drink cats piss Budweiser when there's so many lovely beers available now.

But, obviously, nowhere near as unreasonable as your coworker.

blackteasplease · 12/12/2018 18:51

What a mad thing to say! What makes one drink masculine and one feminine except that traditionally or often men have preferred it? Just personal taste. Why is the stronger drink (wine) for women anyway? Yes you traditionally drink less of it at a time than beer but you don't have to.

I'm not a beer drinker except in specific circumstances. I have occasions when I like all the different kids of drink (though I do lean towards the fizz or cocktail type drinks I must admit!)

blackteasplease · 12/12/2018 18:52

I don't like Budweiser at all though I must admit!
