Many people and organisations use these words interchangerbly. The meaning is always clear. I actually don't give a stuff if others disagree.

glitter

You do realise this is AIBU?

raspberryTrousers · 12/12/2018 16:32

@GlitterStick

I don't have to. I don't mind it.

I think it shows up those who can't make a coherent argument and resort to personal attacks.

I don't expect to change any minds but it's sometimes good to remind people that there are other views out there.

Helmetbymidnight · 12/12/2018 16:34

if men can compete in women’s sports, use women’s spaces, changing rooms, refuges, as well as their own of course, oh and demand women wax their testicles, etc etc
whose rights are decreasing? And whose rights are increasing?

FamilyOfAliens · 12/12/2018 16:35

The 'bevaginaed' as you like to call them shouldn't be in a men's single-sex space. If they feel like men then whatever, they can feel like anything they like but they will never be men and as such should not be in those spaces. Just as the bepenised(?) should not be in women's only spaces regardless of how they feel. Feelings don't change biology, your sex is your sex, end of. If someone has found a way to actually change humans biological sex then they should be up for a Nobel prize however we all know this has not been done.
Meanwhile in all of this "what about the people with vagina's" (otherwise known as Women) wanting access to men's spaces that's not something that's actually happening is it? It is men that are trying to gain access to women's spaces. Men wanting to be placed in women's prisons, men wanting to participate in women's sports. It's men who are shouting down women who are speaking out about the proposed changes to legislation that will erode the rights women have fought for 100 years to get. Men who are physically attacking women when they try to gather to discuss the issues facing women. Men who are calling the police when a woman dares utter the words Women = adult human female and says that women don't have penises.

Avegemitesandwich · 12/12/2018 16:37

Again, the burden of proof is on you to explain why your precious XX chromosomes which, according to you, inescapably determine the nature of every cell in our bodies, paradoxically have no impact on the cells of your brain, which is, for most of us at least, a really vital part of our bodies. I thought Biology Is A Fact and stuff?

Lol at 'precious xx chromosomes'. Your mask is slipping.

Here is a 2015 study on make and female brains:
www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2015/10/151029185544.htm

As I have always understood it (and I could be wrong!) there are certain characteristics that are more prevelant in a certain sex, eg. Spatial awareness in males. However, if you read any research on this it always says 'tends to' or 'often'. A woman might have a really well developed 'spatial awareness' area of her brain, but thus doesn't mean she has a 'male brain'. Added to that is the fact that brains are plastic and therefore susceptible to outside factors from birth, which makes it difficult to test what is innate, especially when you think about how differently we treat boys and girls from birth. As far as I know, there is zero conclusive evidence to suggest that someone could absolutely for sure be able to say that a certain brain was male or female.

Avegemitesandwich · 12/12/2018 16:39

Can women can compete in men’s sports, use men’s spaces, changing rooms, refuges, as well as their own of course, oh and demand men wax their testicles, etc?

I don't understand your point here?

RivanQueen · 12/12/2018 16:43

Can women can compete in men’s sports, use men’s spaces, changing rooms, refuges, as well as their own of course, oh and demand men wax their testicles, etc?

Yes what is the point of this statement?
Oh and women don't have testicles.

Helmetbymidnight · 12/12/2018 16:43

Can women compete in men’s sports?
Not really
use men’s spaces, changing rooms, refuges?
Nope
oh and demand men wax their testicles, etc
?

Are you trying to pretend that getting rid of sex will be liberating for women? Really?

JacquesHammer · 12/12/2018 16:43

Can women can compete in men’s sports

If I compete against a man in contact sport I’m not doing to damage him. If he competes against me, I run the real risk of being injured.

That’s currently happening in Australia.

Whose rights are decreasing?

raspberryTrousers · 12/12/2018 16:44

""what about the people with vagina's" (otherwise known as Women) wanting access to men's spaces that's not something that's actually happening is it?"

Yes, it is.

Shall we start finding examples? We'll post links one at a time and the first one to die of boredom loses.

Just before we do, I want to womansplain something to you as you're getting carried away. I haven't advocated for trans' rights or men's rights here. I haven't argued that people can change sex or anything similar.

I suggested that TRAs who are triggered by "women" need to fuck off. I think men in women's sports look ridiculous. I think men in women's prisons should continue to be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

You're arguing with the wrong person.

What I have said is that we need different levels of precision in our language depending on the situation and that for most discourse, sex and gender are synonymous. It isn't some big battle to win.

Now the thread's moved on a little and I hope I've argued that women aren't losing to trans. A trans right is one for xx and xy people.

Did you think I'd said otherwise?

RivanQueen · 12/12/2018 16:44

If I went into the men's changing rooms at my local gym, tried to get a bed in a men's refuge for the night or tried to join a men's sporting team I would be turned away and rightfully so.

Weetabixandshreddies · 12/12/2018 16:45

get back to me when unprotected gender causes pregnancy

But actually, you are using an incorrect word here because it isn't "unprotected sex" is it? The word "sex" is actually short for "sexual intercourse" so this is absolutely an example of a word being used in place of another and people still being able to understand the meaning.

JacquesHammer · 12/12/2018 16:48

The word "sex" is actually short for "sexual intercourse" so this is absolutely an example of a word being used in place of another and people still being able to understand the meaning

A shortening of a term isn’t the same as a completely different term.

Avegemitesandwich · 12/12/2018 16:49

The point is that when you start segregating by 'gender' not 'sex' what you end up with is men in the women's changing rooms, in women's sports, in women's prisons, in womens refuges etc.

That is why the distinction is important. Or we could just do away with 'gender' altogether because it's bollocks anyway.

KlutzyDraconequus · 12/12/2018 16:50

I hope I've argued that women aren't losing to trans.

They may not be in the pet of the old where you're pretending you are right now.
Here in the UK they are.

GlitterStick · 12/12/2018 16:54

Questioning job, now disbelieving where in the world a poster is.
Just for a different viewpoint. Always the same, anyone with a different view it starts up.
Getting predictable now

raspberryTrousers · 12/12/2018 16:56

@Helmetbymidnight

But you could (except for the waxing testicles bit) as much as any transwoman.

@JacquesHammer

"If I compete against a man in contact sport I’m not doing to damage him. If he competes against me, I run the real risk of being injured."

Says whom? DH is a slight-ish (not very good) MMA fighter. More for the fitness than anything else. Rhonda Roussey could weight the same as him and kick his arse.

I know there was an x-post where I reminded someone else of my views, but you've got the bit between your teeth too.

"Whose rights are decreasing?"

No idea. Do we have a right to participate in contact sports of our own choosing and somehow minimize the chance of being hurt? I don't think so. You have the right to not be forced to fight someone.

@RivanQueen

Proof of your being turned away or something you've made up?

JacquesHammer · 12/12/2018 16:57

Biology

Utter garbage.
