Finding it hard not to be angry and bitter today

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 11/12/2018 18:00

This is a rant. There is no solution, I just need to vent on here or else I may well vent elsewhere.

I have no children and no husband. I do have an elderly, but mostly well and active father and a mother in law who is terminally ill - but not imminent. She could live a year, she could live 6 months. It's just the nature of the beast.

I also have a business that I work very hard to maintain, especially at the moment when I'm juggling nursing my mother in law. My business involves working with professional/semi professional sports people and so we are booked in for some sports matches over Christmas and New Year. Normally I'd take the burden if most of these, as it's my business. However, this year I can't because I have a lot of my mother in law's, and by virtue of that, my late husband's family coming over from the Caribbean to stay with us. I'm thrilled about this and can't wait to see them, that's not a problem. The problem is that my staff - who I've rarely asked to do anything they didn't want to do - are refusing to cover some of the matches because they want to be home with their children. I actually had one day to me today that me leaving my mother in law (did I mention she's terminally fucking ill and needs nursing) is less important than her leaving her children with their fucking father for one day. It is the lack of empathy that got to me. I think I'm a pretty fair employer. I don't expect parents to work the tours unless they want to, I let them work as flexible as possible and take time out for appts, assemblies etc. All I wanted was this year for some compassion and understanding in return and for a few people to take on the Christmas work that I normall do myself.

I'm so angry. It's like my life is worth less.

As school, nurseries, childminders etc. are usually unavailable over Christmas holidays, and it’s a legal obligation to look after young children, perhaps they have no choice

My business partner is a single parent and I have employed other single parents and also people who have partners working in emergency services. I am aware that some people can't work some of the times when we have to work and I will work around that so the rota is fair to them. In this case I happen to know her husband and her mother will be there.

And thank you everyone for your kindness. I have to admit that the reason why I couldn't get the words out to sack her was because I was trying not to cry.

Blimey OP. Someone rude and deranged enough to say that in a meeting with both bosses deserves to be sacked. That’s the definition of gross misconduct. Just imagine what she says behind your back 😮

ToftyAC · 12/12/2018 18:54

Hurrah for you and your business partner. I’d refuse to give the nasty piece of work a reference as well!

Grace212 · 12/12/2018 18:55

OP "I have to admit that the reason why I couldn't get the words out to sack her was because I was trying not to cry."

oh I feel for you. Flowers

what an awful person she is.

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 12/12/2018 18:56

It’s not like they have been asked to work Christmas Day. If working Boxing Day is such an issue then they should get a job where they have don’t have that responsibility.

Loveglee · 12/12/2018 18:57

What an awful, awful thing to say. As a childless person, I would be trying not to cry hearing that as well. How can some people be so hurtful? Merry Christmas, Leigh, and good luck with finding a much nicer replacement for her in the new year.

FrogFairy · 12/12/2018 18:58

Bloody hell, good riddance to the cruel bitch.

Can you imagine if this situation was reversed and a boss said all those things to pressure a childless employee to work? There would be ructions and quite rightly so.

PyongyangKipperbang · 12/12/2018 18:59

Wowsers!

I have to work over Xmas due to being in hospitality and although I have requested certain hours off (Xmas eve evening being very important to me), I would never DREAM of saying that my kids should come before anything. I took the job knowing the hours, and I would expect to be sacked on the spot if I spoke to my boss like that.

Good for you and your partner for getting shot. I wouldnt be at all surprised to find that she has been skiving in others ways too, you may find that her colleagues were worried about saying anything when she was still there if she speaks to them like she spoke to you......

Puzzledandpissedoff · 12/12/2018 18:59

The one who told me that I was bitter decided to tell me again how much more important her children were than an old woman (her words) and why couldn't my dad or a neighbour sit with her for a day, or I could afford to get in a carer because I've obviously got money due to not having to pay out for presents for kids. She informed me that I don't know what real responsibilities are and I never think of anyone other than myself

Completely intolerable Angry I'm very glad she's gone, though hope there won't be any comeback from her sacking (I don't think you said how long she's been there?)

Wonderful that your business partner will cover the 26th, though I can't help being a bit sorry that one of the other two won't be doing it. At least this way, though, there's little risk of a sudden "illness" creating more chaos on the day, so probably the best solution all round

"Apology" from one of the three or not - and personally I wouldn't put much store by it - I hope you'll be making far fewer allowances in future and sticking instead with the letter of their contracts?

OliviaStabler · 12/12/2018 19:00

Good result OP

KeiTeNgeNge · 12/12/2018 19:00

Glad this has been resolved

DontCallMeCharlotte · 12/12/2018 19:01

Wow! Well handled by you and your business partner but the woman with the children - what an utter utter bitch. I'm childless and one my colleagues has dropped some spectacularly insensitive clangers but they've always come from a kind place. Wishing you an easier 2019.

CoraPirbright · 12/12/2018 19:01

Hurrah for the sacking!! What an unspeakably awful woman to say those things to you. I dont generally wish ill on people but in her case......

TedAndLola · 12/12/2018 19:02

So glad you've got rid of that poisonous woman.

What happened with the third? One apologised, one was a cow, but there was one more?

Athena51 · 12/12/2018 19:03

I'm glad it's been dealt with and especially glad that the awful woman has been sacked.

OP you sound like such a lovely, caring person. I hope you have a wonderful and peaceful Christmas with your beloved MIL and wish you all peace and happiness Flowers

Aridane · 12/12/2018 19:03

Thank goodness you / your partner fired for!! And a salutary warning for the other staff

timeisnotaline · 12/12/2018 19:03

Unbelievable that she doubled down on being such a heartless bitch. Good on your business partner. And on the one who apologised, that’s how people should behave when they make mistakes.

MsLexic · 12/12/2018 19:05

Doesn't sound at all helpful. If I had a nice boss I would help them out. I don't, as it happens.

wizzywig · 12/12/2018 19:07

Op i hope you have a calm christmas. Thank god that woman has been sacked.

141mum · 12/12/2018 19:08

God almighty, that’s people for you. Give me a job, I will help

Puzzledandpissedoff · 12/12/2018 19:08

I have to admit that the reason why I couldn't get the words out to sack her was because I was trying not to cry

Once again completely understandable. The only slight pity is that she probably noticed and felt really quite clever about it - though whether she's feeling so clever now is something else entirely

I just hope that what happened to her will serve as a reminder to the others of how things are going to be from now on

Groovee · 12/12/2018 19:16

😱 I cannot believe that she honestly thought she had the right to continue her tirade of abuse. Bit of a crap way to start Christmas for anyone but hopefully she's learned a stern lesson.

At least on Boxing Day you'll be with the ones you want to be with as well as having your godchildren as an added bonus x

MulticolourMophead · 12/12/2018 19:25

I suspect the sacking will have the effect of subduing the other two. I'd guess this woman was the ringleader in pushing not to work at Xmas, and now she's gone, the other 2 may fall back into line.

IggyAce · 12/12/2018 19:25

I’m so glad that the heartless bitch was sacked. I’m sorry that you had to listen to her ranting.
