To think the council should fix this?

My front door and the frame don't join together properly so it's absolutely freezing in my house.
The drafts are so bad.
They have been out today and say nothing they can do.
Can I have your opinion?
Or advice what I can do please?
It's so cold

Yes itnis normal to sit wearing jumpers and drsssing gowns in a cold house Hmm why would you not do this?!

OPs house sounds on the chilly side but there are things she can do to improve it. Only she's refusing and wants the council to fix a perfectly normal door.

beetty · 11/12/2018 19:28

If you've got the heating on all day in the winter your house shouldn't be freezing cold !

myrtleWilson · 11/12/2018 19:28

OP - how long have you lived there by the way?

dippledorus · 11/12/2018 19:28

I wear a jumper. I’m wearing 3 layers now. Why wouldn’t you

MsJaneAusten · 11/12/2018 19:28

I'm not entitled
Yes. You are. You now have eight pages of people explaining how they’d fix it if it were their door, and still don’t seem to understand why the council won’t.

i have a pre payment gas meter and it's costing a fortune because I need the gas on all the time otherwise it is freezing.
Put a curtain up and get some draft excluding tape then!

There's no door from the hall to the living room so I can't even keep that room warm you know what might help there? A curtain!

Nicknacky · 11/12/2018 19:29

But that’s not down to the door. It’s down to single glazing, insulation etc. You are focusing on the wrong issue.

italiancortado · 11/12/2018 19:29

there's a social housing tenant fucking freezing being slagged off because she can't or won't buy a front door when she's paying rent to have the house maintained normally.

Erm no. That's not what has happened here at all. Not even close. No one is expecting or even suggesting OP buys a new door.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 11/12/2018 19:29

No its not normal, so take measures to rectify them until the council has fit you on a modernisation programme.

It's a pain, but winning - in the sense of getting warmer - is what's important.
Get some draught excluder, exclude the draughts. It'll honestly be easier to do that yourself than fighting the council.

No door on sitting room? Obviously, that doesn't help you keep warm in there.
Is there supposed to be a door? Ie, is this a missing door? Can you see a frame, and screw holes of previous hinges?
If so,, ask council for a door. If no joy, contact your local councillor for help. Contact details online, or ask in library.

If by design there's no door, so it's not a question of a missing door, you need to think about putting up a curtain. Thick as possible, to keep warmth in. Charity shops are your friend here.
Might take a while, but you'll find a cheap one eventually.
Curtain rail? Charity shop? Gumtree? Card in newsagent? Church second hand sale?

Also, put a curtain over that door. Once you've draught proofed it. Makes a difference.

Ideally, council should maintain housing stock to a decent standard. We no longer live in an ideal world. Don't remain cold on a point of principle.

Bunnyfuller · 11/12/2018 19:30

We’re in a cottage, the doors are a different fit every day 😂😂😂😂

Beenoutedformyhobby · 11/12/2018 19:30

why would you not do this
I've got a dressing gown on. I've also got the heating on.
I mean when people say 'wear 2 jumpers, a dressing gown, three vests, bed socks and sit with quilts over you' which people posit as normal only on MN.

italiancortado · 11/12/2018 19:30

have a pre payment gas meter and it's costing a fortune because I need the gas on all the time otherwise it is freezing

Oh ffs. Me too. It's the time of year where people have their heating on all the time or it will be freezing. You are no worse off than any of the rest of us.

beetty · 11/12/2018 19:31

It's feeezing even with the gas on !!
Hence the issue !

OP posts:
italiancortado · 11/12/2018 19:32

If you've got the heating on all day in the winter your house shouldn't be freezing cold !

Indeed. But if your house is freezing cold. Despite having the heating on, you have to wonder why. A tiny gap in the door frame isn't the reason.

Dermymc · 11/12/2018 19:33

What's the actual temperature with the gas on?

Dressing gowns in winter is perfectly normal behaviour, heating or no heating.

Nicknacky · 11/12/2018 19:33

Op, do you see now that it’s the flat that is the problem, not that door exclusively?

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 11/12/2018 19:34

And changing the external door is not going to make it better OP! HELP YOURSELF or stay cold, that is your choice!

dippledorus · 11/12/2018 19:34

I can’t afford to have my heating on all day.

So I have layers and a hot water bottle.

Seriously the op needs to wise up and stop being so pathetic and do something to help herself.

beetty · 11/12/2018 19:34

I don't have a clue what temperature it is tbh

OP posts:
BentNeckLady · 11/12/2018 19:34

Have you got a gas fire?

beetty · 11/12/2018 19:34

No they took the fire out before I moved in.

OP posts:
dippledorus · 11/12/2018 19:35

When did you move in?

Did you view the property before you moved in?

beetty · 11/12/2018 19:36

2016
I did view yes but I didn't bid
It was a direct allocation as I was homeless

OP posts:
italiancortado · 11/12/2018 19:36

They took out the fire, you have a 1986 kitchen, single glazing and a really old boiler and there was shit on the walls for good measure?

Ok then Grin

Dermymc · 11/12/2018 19:36

Does your heating have a thermostat? Or get one of those indoor temperature thermometers, councils usually provide them free.

I don't think the door is a big issue. The rest of your flat is clearly not well insulated but there are things you can do.
