Mrs May. Who's going to replace her as PM?

longwayoff · 11/12/2018 08:51

After her performance yesterday it's simply a matter of time? Or is it? Who is fit to replace her? I can't think of a time when there was nobody I'd entrust the country to by voting for them but now here we are. What on earth is going to happen?

I hope she wins. Best of a bad lot. Otherwise I think Sajid Javid will get the job.

TheElementsSong · 12/12/2018 11:10

The Tories had a leadership vote in 2016. TM won. OK, her campaign was based on lies, and it turns out electing her was a terrible mistake, and the whole party is going to hell in a handcart, but that's democracy. It was the will of the party, and to vote again is obviously anti democratic.

THIS!

longwayoff · 12/12/2018 11:13

And Juncker, Alaskan. What is it you believe he will do to us in the event of no deal?

OP posts:
derxa · 12/12/2018 11:16

Alaskan, please explain what horrors mr Juncker will unleash Nothing I expect. He looks decidedly unwell

Kazzyhoward · 12/12/2018 11:21

The problem of the EU is not going away, tamping down in this current iteration of Brexit doesn't make it evaporate. .... There is serious discord across the country about the common fisheries/agricultural policies, free movement, the regulatory framework and so forth. This isn't going away.

Agree 100%. People saying we should just stay in the EU are deluded if they think it's all going to blow over. The major political parties are split over the EU and have been for 30 years. The voters are split over the EU. It's not going away. Even if we stay, it will fester and come to a head again at every single general election. A new UKIP mark 2 will emerge to take the anti EU votes and sooner or later it will get enough votes/MPs to threaten the main parties and yet again, a main party will have to promise EU reform or a referendum to get the UKIP mark 2 voters. Politicians of all parties of the last 30 years are to blame for this by not sorting it out sooner and allowing the country to sleep walk into an ever increasing EU superstate. At the very least, Blair/Brown should have exercised their veto on free movement of the new European countries when they joined the EU - they caused a lot of the anti-eu sentiment by not doing so.

AlaskanOilBaron · 12/12/2018 11:24

And Juncker, Alaskan. What is it you believe he will do to us in the event of no deal?

Well, nothing, obviously? I'm referring to the deal he might inflict upon us were we locked into the backstop.

longwayoff · 12/12/2018 11:34

LOL. OH! Look over there! You're right derxa, not good at all. Due to retire very shortly I believe.

OP posts:
AlaskanOilBaron · 12/12/2018 11:37

Despite finding Juncker odious, I also think he's terribly sexy.

Same for Donald Rumsfeld (Iraq-era Rumsfeld, not current day).

AlaskanOilBaron · 12/12/2018 11:37

Probably time for a name change. Wink

longwayoff · 12/12/2018 11:49

Crikey Alaskan. Things are worse than I thoughtXmas Grin

Oh. TM looking excessively smug at question time. Doesn't look remotely bothered.

OP posts:
herethereandeverywhere · 12/12/2018 12:13

Alaskan

Your post quoting mine is confusing. I was referring to categories of people who want a no deal Brexit (which you go on to concede would be 'not good'.)

I'm not sure what referencing areas of the EU that people are dissatisfied with has to do with the reality of a hard Brexit TBH - stay in and improve rather than run away cutting off nose to spite face as we go would be my solution.

Are you saying that the agricultural and fisheries policies plus freedom of movement are worse than a shrinking economy over decades? How bizarre, I can only assume you fall into an extension of category 2 with something financial to gain from the misery.

AlaskanOilBaron · 12/12/2018 12:14

TM doesn’t cope well at question time when it gets hot.

She’s rigid to the detriment of the process.

DarlingNikita · 12/12/2018 12:18

I think she's going to survive the vote.

I do too. Because ultimately, if you were in the Tory party, what other cunt would you want? Johnson? Gove? Rees-Mogg doesn't want to be leader. Maybe a relative nobody like Jeremy Hunt would be interested; but would they consider him a convincing enough leader?

courgettetrees · 12/12/2018 12:22

She hasn't lost the vote yet!

AlaskanOilBaron · 12/12/2018 13:01

Are you saying that the agricultural and fisheries policies plus freedom of movement are worse than a shrinking economy over decades?

Firstly, if that’s you’re business, then yes. Secondly, you presume that I put the same stock in the doom and gloom reports as you. All economic reports are based on assumptions and inherent bias (see Mark Carney)

Your views are as much driven by belief as mine.

icannotremember · 12/12/2018 13:08

Oh Alaskan for god's sake, are you really, really sticking to the "it's all project fear" line? At this stage? No wonder this country is in such a mess.

AlaskanOilBaron · 12/12/2018 13:17

I know! Sheer ignorance, stupidity, racism. Wink

chillpizza · 12/12/2018 13:27

Based of mumsnet believing she will stay I say she will be out. Mumsnet users predicted a in vote and not trump we voted out and got trump. Sooo boris as pm I predict.

herethereandeverywhere · 12/12/2018 13:27

Alaskan
but agriculture and fisheries represent a small minority of the economy and have finite room for growth beyond that - are we really going to be a booming country of 70 million people off the back of fishing and farming?!!!

In which case why sacrifice the greater good for those minority industries?

And economic modelling and predictions do not equate to belief. Please present your equivalent evidence that the economy will in fact boom and GDP will be greater over the coming decades.......

Every single forecast/review/prediction has said the country will be worse off economically, for a considerable amount of time.

chillpizza · 12/12/2018 13:30

We need better protection for our fisheries and farming this whole thing shows it. We currently don’t produce enough food for ourselves we need to as well as fishing our own waters for our sole us. Personally.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 12/12/2018 13:50

People saying we should just stay in the EU are deluded if they think it's all going to blow over. The major political parties are split over the EU and have been for 30 years. The voters are split over the EU. It's not going away

I totally agree - and also with the PP who said too much of this whole mess has been about political ambition, to which I'd add snouts in the trough and general incompetence

Nothing new there then Hmm

Talkinpeece · 12/12/2018 13:51

Fisheries = 0.2% of GDP
UK fishermen export 70% of what they catch
UK fishing rights are mostly owned by foreigners as the Brits sold up and moved to Spain.

Farming
A trade deal with the USA will destroy UK agriculture

Producing food in the UK - hard to grow lettuces in Suffolk in December

longwayoff · 12/12/2018 13:57

Chillpizza. The brits hate fish. If you think we're all desperate to eat kippers for breakfast you're wrong. If you think U K can be self sufficient in food production you are sorely mistaken. How have you come by such misinformation?

OP posts:
derxa · 12/12/2018 14:01

TM looking excessively smug at question time. Doesn't look remotely bothered. She's going to make a deal with the MPs . Keep me until we leave the eu then I'll resign.
