To think Scotland should be allowed to leave the UK and remain in the EU

New poll says that most Scots think they would be better off leaving the UK after brexit. It's time they had another vote right?

Dear god, was that a suggestion that Ireland's seperation from the British Empire was a breeze? Its positively Brexitey in levels of bullshit.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 09/12/2018 09:20

Dear god, was that a suggestion that Ireland's seperation from the British Empire was a breeze? Its positively Brexitey in levels of bullshit.

Who said it was a breeze? It was a response to those that think an independent Scotland is impossible. Britain was a powerful empire when Ireland gained independence. Brexit Britain is sending the UK down the toilet.

Youseethethingis · 09/12/2018 09:22

Ed has the right of it ^^^
Also sick of people saying Scots are being ignored or dragged any place. There are about 66million people in this country and every one of them has the same value. You don’t get to say one Scottish vote counts for 9-10 English just to even up the population differential, which is essentially what some are suggesting should happen. Only they would never, ever word it that way because that would sound “anti-democratic”.

MacarenaFerreiro · 09/12/2018 09:23

No WAY. I was a very strong NO in the independence referendum. I was a remainer.

I think leaving the EU is a mistake. But cutting yourself off from your closest neighbour and biggest trading partner is even a bigger mistake. And the division and ill-feeling of the indyref is still alive and kicking.

Please do not put us through that living hell again. Once in a generation, remember.

Averyimportantperson · 09/12/2018 09:28

Scotland wouldn't survive financially.

The SNPs fiscal policy was based on oil prices which have tanked. If Scotland had left the UK at the last vote we would now be insolvent. SNPs claims have been proven to have been false.

We also wouldn't pass the financial criteria to join the EU.

Scotland would also loose free university and free prescriptions which we only have thanks to the Barnet formula. This give Scotland a higher spend per capita than the rest of the UK.

So no, Scotland should not leave the UK.

I voted to remain during the brexit referendum. Remain lost. We're leaving. I moved on.

The no campaigners need to do the same thing.

JustABetterPlayer · 09/12/2018 09:28

Scotland alone would not be able to join the EU as it doesn’t meet financial criteria required for membership.

Cleo18 · 09/12/2018 09:29

Actually I agree. I was so against the Scottish ref and wanted the union to stay strong - I live in London but a lot of family in Scotland.

Now I think that for Scotland things are very different.

speakout · 09/12/2018 09:33

The use of the word "allowed" in your OP says it all really.

AndhowcouldIeverrefuse · 09/12/2018 09:33

Do travel to Europe and see what living standards and spending power are there and compare to the UK.
please go and compare the unemployment rates
Exactly. How do they manage to have better standards of living, better health stats and more spending power with higher unemployment rates? Or put it like this: why doesn't work in the UK pay?

What are the chances of the Sanchez govnt still being in power when an independent Scotland applies to join the EU?
A poll last week suggested they would win a GE by a good margin.

Cleo18 · 09/12/2018 09:33

I'd still want Scotland to be part of the UK though

Cleo18 · 09/12/2018 09:38

Sorry but by "travel in Europe" and see "better standards of living etc" - you mean France, Germany, Sweden, the major cities in Italy, the Netherlands.

You don't mean rural Greece, Romania, Lithuania, the poorer parts of Hungary or Slevenia or Spain. It is easy to get romantic about "Europe" and treat it as some civilised, rich utopia. I bet most of us don't travel to the rough bits

Cleo18 · 09/12/2018 09:39

sorry - Slovenia typo

bellinisurge · 09/12/2018 09:44

With the last independence referendum I was against the idea. Now, the Remain vote was so clear and Scottish interests are being ignored I wouldn't disagree with Scottish independence. It would sadden me but I wouldn't blame them.

Patroclus · 09/12/2018 09:49

Well you said the situation with Ireland wasnt 'fucked' when they left the B.E Grimes. A ccouple of Civil wars, thousands dead and a massive compromise not fucked? its an insult to compare that to Scotland. Neither can Scotland or Ireland use breaking away as an excuse to wipe away their complicity in the British Empire.

Valkarie · 09/12/2018 10:03

No one is forcing Scotland to stay part of the UK though. You say should be allowed to leave as if someone is making Scotland stay. The most recent vote showed that the majority wanted to stay. If people change their minds there can be a different outcome, but it is not up to you alone.

StepAwayFromGoogle · 09/12/2018 10:03

Really?! You think now is the time to have another vote? Really?!

marvellousnightforamooncup · 09/12/2018 10:06

I'd be up for another vote for Scotland if Brexit goes through.

starzig · 09/12/2018 10:16

The only reason I wanted Scotland to stay was to retain EU membership. I didn't want Scotland to go through the years of waiting that other countries had to do to join. So the EU referendum is a major game changer for most people.

LakieLady · 09/12/2018 10:21

I agree.

As DP's father was born in Glasgow to Scottish parents, he'd hopefully be entitled to Scottish nationality and we could escape Brexit by moving north of the border.

moredoll · 09/12/2018 10:27

Democracy in this country is becoming a laughing stock. The majority voted leave, that is what's happened. I'm scared like everyone else, but it could work out okay for us. We've got to sit and wait it out.

17.4 million people voted to leave. There are 46.5 million registered voters in this country, which has an overall population of 66 million.
Only 33.5 million voted. The correct statement is "The majority of those who voted". It was a very, very slim majority, certainly not the majority of eligible voters.

Tiscold · 09/12/2018 10:37

Honestly let them if they want too. They do most of their trade with us but if they want to break that trade off then go ahead.

It would be just as daft as the uk leaving the eu.

SilverySurfer · 09/12/2018 10:42

Babdoc
An independent Scotland would have an unsustainable deficit worse than Greece, no currency, no central bank, no reserves to set one up, and a junk bond credit rating. It would lose the £12billion subsidy it receives annually from England under the Barnett formula, and would have to raise taxes and cut pensions and benefits.
Scotland does over 75% of its trade with the rest of the UK and less than 20% with the EU. How stupid to leave its major trade partner to go and be a minnow in the EU, dominated by Germany and France.
But then, the SNP are not noted for brains.

100% agree with the above. No doubt there will be another referendum in the next couple of years and if the vote is to leave, I wish the Scots well and the best of luck joining the EU any time soon.

The SNP is a one policy party and if they win independence have a shock coming to them.

groundcontroltomontydon · 09/12/2018 10:43

Leaving the EU and state secession are momentous events and decisions around them shouldn't be knee-jerk or cobbled together on the back of a Bullingdon/other elitist club cocktail napkin. They should be debated, analysed by experts (remember them?), scrutinised by an informed public and properly costed. And the electorate needs to educate itself: it's not democracy if you can't be arsed to understand what you're voting for. It's not the effing X Factor.

Cherries101 · 09/12/2018 10:45

If Scotland left to join the EU it would cause chaos in Spain. They would never, ever be allowed to join the EU. So leaving the UK would just plunge Scotland into an Iceland type situation and wouldn’t be good for anyone.

bellinisurge · 09/12/2018 10:49

That is for the Scottish voters to decide @Cherries101 . Because they are currently being dragged out of the EU against their will.
