To think Scotland should be allowed to leave the UK and remain in the EU

New poll says that most Scots think they would be better off leaving the UK after brexit. It's time they had another vote right?

I am a bit torn on this one. The circumstances have materially changed so it seems reasonable to ask for another vote as that was always understood. I do not want any part of the far right, racist regressive politics going on in England right now - it's horrible. But what Brexit has made abundantly clear is how incredibly difficult it is to extricate yourself from years and years of shared legislation and trading interests. Although I am a multilateralist, Europe is not our biggest trading partner- the rest of the UK is.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 09/12/2018 08:10

GhostofFrankGrimes So they would join the Euro? (I mean who wouldn’t want to Hmm), the EU would run their Heath service and school system? Army wise I assume they would join PESCO?

Sorry but Scotland said they wanted to remain part of the UK. Yes things change (look at the EU) but we can’t call a referendum every year, doesn’t mean they couldn’t call one again in the future.

MimiSunshine · 09/12/2018 08:34

Nobody said it would be simple (well, Brexit was supposed to be..).

Hahahahaha who exactly thought that?

Babdoc · 09/12/2018 08:42

An independent Scotland would have an unsustainable deficit worse than Greece, no currency, no central bank, no reserves to set one up, and a junk bond credit rating. It would lose the £12billion subsidy it receives annually from England under the Barnett formula, and would have to raise taxes and cut pensions and benefits.
Scotland does over 75% of its trade with the rest of the UK and less than 20% with the EU. How stupid to leave its major trade partner to go and be a minnow in the EU, dominated by Germany and France.
But then, the SNP are not noted for brains.

MongerTruffle · 09/12/2018 08:43

YANBU
London should do the same (I’m not joking).

TeeJay1970 · 09/12/2018 08:43

Scotland can not remain in te EU as Scotland is not in the EU.

Soctand wouls have to leave the UK then apply to join the EU as a new country.

Several EU countries have issues with some of their regions wanting to become independent. They will not be keen to let Scotland join as it may give these regions ideas.

DannyWallace · 09/12/2018 08:44

They??
WE (as a country) voted no. Yes it was tight, but over 50% wanted to stay in the UK.
If there's another vote and the outcome changes then they'll have to do a 3rd right? Best out of 3?

Pachyderm1 · 09/12/2018 08:47

There’s a reason the SNP haven’t been pushing for another independence referendum. They know they wouldn’t win, and it could devastate scotland.

I vote against independence but I would happily have another referendum on it. But now? We would have no idea what we were voting for. We would be going into it blind, with no way of making an informed decision.

Once we know what life is like post-Brexit, I’m sure there will be another independence referendum. It’s absolutely awful that we are being dragged from the EU, but now that that’s done we have to be reasonable and risk-averse about how we proceed from here. We can’t double down on the risk without really knowing what we are voting for.

PurpleFlower1983 · 09/12/2018 08:47

Yes they should be allowed another vote. They shouldn’t have to be dragged out of the EU just because of the rest of the UK making an absolutely stupid, ill-informed decision.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 09/12/2018 08:50

Hahahahaha who exactly thought that?

Liam Fox.

AndhowcouldIeverrefuse · 09/12/2018 08:53

However if they want to leave the UK and remain in the EU they will have a fight on their hands from Spain, Belgium and France.
No they won't. See upthread.

So they would join the Euro? (I mean who wouldn’t want to Hmm
Almost all Euro economies have outperformed the UK in the last few years. The UK'S performance lately is only comparable to that of Greece. Do travel to Europe and see what living standards and spending power are there and compare to the UK. The UK could and should be doing so much better - whole other thread though.

the EU would run their Heath service and school system?
Erm what? Confused

ClaryFray · 09/12/2018 08:54

Democracy in this country is becoming a laughing stock. The majority voted leave, that is what's happened. I'm scared like everyone else, but it could work out okay for us. We've got to sit and wait it out. I think Scotland would be stupid to move now, to much uncertainty all going on at once. Calm down people.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 09/12/2018 08:57

I'm scared like everyone else, but it could work out okay for us.

The government impact assessments and BOE projections suggest otherwise.

TenThousandBalloons · 09/12/2018 08:58

An independent Scotland would be absolutely fucked, but I’m so sick of all the whining from them that I think we should just let it happen and watch them crumble.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 09/12/2018 08:59

Is an independent Ireland "fucked" having broken away from the British Empire?

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 09/12/2018 09:00

Do travel to Europe and see what living standards and spending power are there and compare to the UK. please go and compare the unemployment rates

Butchyrestingface · 09/12/2018 09:01

I voted aye 'yes' in the 2014 referendum but the majority voted 'no'.

So there would have to be a second referendum before any decision could be taken as regards Scotland staying in the EU. And there isn't time to do that before Britain exits.

Butchyrestingface · 09/12/2018 09:04

An independent Scotland would be absolutely fucked, but I’m so sick of all the whining from them that I think we should just let it happen and watch them crumble.

53% of Scottish inhabitants did not vote for independence. And of the 47% who did, how many of them are regularly clogging up the media with "whining"?

If you think that independence would be such folly, why should the majority pay for the "whining" of a vocal few? Confused

Weezol · 09/12/2018 09:06

How much would funding another referendum cost? The last one went £2m over budget at £15.841m.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 09/12/2018 09:08

Brexit is costing £500 million a week. The Tories are being propped up by a £1 billion agreement with the DUP. There's no magic money tree....until there is..

Sakura7 · 09/12/2018 09:10

The irony. This is exactly how many people across the Europe feel about the UK and Brexit.

groundcontroltomontydon · 09/12/2018 09:13

No they won't. See upthread
What are the chances of the Sanchez govnt still being in power when an independent Scotland applies to join the EU?

EdtheBear · 09/12/2018 09:14

Actually I voted leave and can honestly tell you that I am 100% glad I was out voted.

If you think divorce after 40 years of EU is bad try divorce after 300 odd years. So many companies are set up nationally across the UK. So many people work across the UK. Going to London for meetings etc can you imagine the chaos if people needed a work permit to attend a meeting Confused

Let the dust settle from thd EU fallout.

Patroclus · 09/12/2018 09:15

So people are happy with this current state? the constant uncertainty, hatred and nationalism that these bloody things generate?

How about we actually use our politial system in the way its meant to be? and if you dont like those politicians already there, do something about it.

I think what is currently going on should have shown how simple seperating things like the armed services and currency really is likely to be and the likely economic effects; except these ties are centuries old instead of decades. Also how misguided it is to believe Scotland will simply wander into the EU and for some reason claim every drop of oil going in the north sea.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 09/12/2018 09:18

You do realise that all of the above applies to the UK leaving the EU? That is why some companies have moved out of the UK.
