Think my last stocking was when I was 18....by the next Christmas I had a 2 month old baby and was living with my hubby

RaininSummer · 07/12/2018 18:28

Stopped for this year after thirty years as neither live at home now and there are two gc who father Christmas does visit.

Cosyjimjamsforautumn · 07/12/2018 18:30

Even the visiting 90 year olds get a christmas stocking small pillow case in our house. Grin Santa also usually leaves a couple of tins of tuna by the fireplace for the cats if she remembers

delboysskinandblister · 07/12/2018 18:31

we always used to have 2 each. the same pair since the late 70s.

I am feeling un festive now for asking Santa to stop all those years ago - I feel a stocking revival coming on. I wonder if I will get stockings this year??? Xmas Grin

GaryBaldbiscuit · 07/12/2018 18:48

I find it a good excuse for knickers/boxers and smellies and whatnot

Oh yes, I'd forgotten to mention the stockings for the pets - no age limits there, either!

No thought of stopping here, everybody gets one. Santa still gets his mince pie and a tot of rum too.

CherryPavlova · 07/12/2018 19:43

Mine would be very upset if we stopped. We’ve a boyfriend staying this year and I’m told he’s expecting one too.
It wouldn’t feel like Christmas without stockings.

HeronLanyon · 07/12/2018 19:47

My secret adult stockings after decades of none were pillow cases with ribbon tied on a fireplace. absutely no tat. Mini perfume flasks filled with everyone’s fave perfume, small bamboo bowls, sudoku or similar books, chocolate, mini torch, satsuma (obvs) and temp tattoos - we have a family tradition of wearing these Christmas Day - none of us have real ones. Those stocking presents were the hit of the day. thank you santa and elves and reindeer. As always.

BuntyBonus · 07/12/2018 19:51

Do you wrap the presents that go in a stocking? Or are they just little bits that are unwrapped? I’ve not done one before.

ShinyMe · 07/12/2018 19:52

When I was about 19 or 20 my mum asked if I wanted a stocking.... (pause - I was about to say 'yes of COURSE') ... or some cash? OH CASH PLEASE! Easter eggs were replaced with cash about the same time.

titchy · 07/12/2018 19:53

You'd hate us - ours are late teens and we still get up at 5am to fill their stockings up! Blush

And we leave a mince pie, carrot and glass of sherry can of Stella on the hearth Grin

ShinyMe · 07/12/2018 19:55

Actually, I did a stocking for myself one year, in my late 30s probably. I bought little things through the year, wrapped them and put them in a stocking in the back of the wardrobe. Opened them all at stupid o'clock on Christmas morning and it was LOVELY. All sorts of tiny things I'd forgotten about - nail varnish, mini alcohol bottles, sweets, hair clips, socks, a jar of chutney...

bridgetreilly · 07/12/2018 19:58

Yes, but they are adults. They can buy their own.

Do stockings if you want to, don't if you don't. But don't do them and complain about it.

Bellatrix14 · 07/12/2018 20:00

Could you tell them that if they’re expecting a stocking it would be nice if you all organised one each? We all get stockings in my family, regardless of age, but we draw names out of a hat at the start of December. A bit like secret Santa... but without the secret.
I don’t really get the idea of stockings being just for children, but I wouldn’t keep organising them and paying for them now that they’re adults if they’re not appreciative.

Blobbyweeble · 07/12/2018 20:01

My dc’s are 26,25 and 22 and still have stockings. I follow the , something they want, something they need, something to eat and something to read formula plus the usual chocolate coins.
This year we agreed to buy an item for a local food bank per day instead of advent calendars.

JustHereForThePooStories · 07/12/2018 20:01

We never did stockings in my house when I was a child. Just gifts from Santa.

Strangely, Santa started leaving me a stocking the year I got married, on the first Christmas DH and I spent together. He also brought the dog one.
DH gets a stocking now too.

It’s twee and silly but, fuckit, it’s a bit of fun.

HeronLanyon · 07/12/2018 20:26

buntybonus for some reason the elves preparing our Father Christmas route deliveries seem only to use very plain tissue paper in our stockings if needed to protect things. Think some elves wrap.

tillytrotter1 · 07/12/2018 20:27

They should each be doing one for you!

HeronLanyon · 07/12/2018 20:28

justhere I’m hazarding a guess that your dh secretly updated your delivery address with Father C. Really lovely and thoughtful. He sounds a keeper.

ShellieEllie · 07/12/2018 20:48

Are you sure they don't want them. Last Christmas I told mine (25, 23, 20) that they wouldn't get another. All 3 were gutted and said that they would rather give up other presents as long as they still got a stocking. I find it easier to buy a few bits throughout the year so it isn't such a chore come Christmas time - although I do often forget that I have bought things so they do end up with more than intended! :)

AvoidingMarking · 07/12/2018 20:57

When my brother turned 18 mum stopped doing them for us.

Totally fair enough, but me and my brother now do them for each other if we are together at Christmas and we're in our 30s

Notquiteagandt · 07/12/2018 22:03

I got my last stockimg at abput 14 and was only that old as my younger sibling was 6yrs younger than me. So kept father christmas alive for them.

Genuinely didnt know stockings for adults where a thing. Never come across it with friends/family etc.

I do think its very sweet though. I may start it as a new tradition. Even if it goes against all my minimalist principles.

batshitbetty · 07/12/2018 22:16

What?? Why on Earth are you doing stockings for adults in the first place? YADNBU

Travisandthemonkey · 07/12/2018 22:26

Mine stopped at 16 and I have to say I was gutted.
I love a stocking. I think it’s the best part of Xmas.
