Wtf? They need to evolve a bit and move on.

ToeCleavage · 07/12/2018 03:46

As do you. And grow a backbone.

Does anyone do you a stocking? No, I thought not.

plaidlife · 07/12/2018 04:01

If they are not wanted and you don't get one then stop. I love stockings and DH does one for me and I do one for anyone who is an overnight guest, so I'll do seven this year.
But I want to and others like it, although MIL was pretty surprised the first time!
If they are just an out grown duty chore stop doing them.

YoThePussy · 07/12/2018 04:02

I had a stocking well into my 50s. Father Christmas passed his duties onto our pets. As a PP has said useful things like shampoo, bath stuff, lip balms. The pets were good at choosing things for Mum’s stocking too.

ToeCleavage · 07/12/2018 04:20

Stockings can be lovely. But if you’re not getting one? Fuck the rest of them.

Women need to stop being such willing martyrs. Just say no! We matter just as much.

Ffs!

MrDonut · 07/12/2018 05:12

Can I suggest some coffee, ToeCleavage?

You seem a little angry about this.

HeronLanyon · 07/12/2018 05:23

I resurrected stockings after decades without. No one knew who had done them -they’re still not sure years later. elderly ma and siblings/partners (50s and 69s) absolutely loved them. There was almost a feeling perhaps Father Christmas really had reappeared!!
Worked because of decades without.
Your dcs are at an age where perhaps F Chris could take a rest for a bit ? But you never know . .

Is my dad the only person who fills our stockings with chocolate Easter bunnies? Xmas ConfusedEaster Confused

Ladiva1971 · 07/12/2018 05:52

Being a more modern Mum I got rid of stockings and I use a trainer sock Grin

QueenGoblin · 07/12/2018 05:56

I'm in my 30s and I still get a stocking! Mum has suggested stopping but I said no!

Stockings are a lovely part of Christmas, it's one of the few traditions we have that hasn't changed since I was little (others have adapted to life changes).

I don't ever really remember thinking it was from Father Christmas, I think I've always been aware my mum did it. She was always very good at putting it out after I'd gone to sleep no matter how much I tried to stay awake to see when it would appear. It's different now I am an adult obviously, but it's still part of Christmas.

Our stockings have always been fairly simple though - diary, chocolate, a pack of sweets, tangerine, a pair of socks or 2, maybe a scarf or earrings or similar type of nic nac.

It's not really about the contents.

I make a stocking for my son and husband now too!

HerSymphonyAndSong · 07/12/2018 06:01

We still get stockings - edible stuff usually so chutneys, chocolate, satsuma etc

My parents do stockings for each other but I always get a little something to add to them

RoseGoldEagle · 07/12/2018 06:06

My mum stoppped stockings and advent calendars when I was 21, I was secretly disappointed but acted very maturely about it!! Now my husband always buys me an advent calendar and we do each other a little stocking, I love it and can’t wait to start doing them for the DCs. But if you say they’re not wanted and they don’t seem bothered then I wouldn’t- maybe ask them- or just do a much smaller one? As others have said you don’t have to fill them with plastic tat

grannycake · 07/12/2018 06:07

Mine are all in their 30's now. Three years ago I gave them the choice - more cash or what they had plus stockings. Unanimous for increase in cash. I do still buy a bottle of their chosen spirits and a box of chocs per family

Artesia · 07/12/2018 06:07

If your mum has suggested stopping stockings, do you not think maybe it’s her way of suggesting it’s a bit of a chore?!

Mine are all mid 20s and would be gutted if they didn’t get stockings Xmas Smile was hey are the best bit of Christmas apparently . Oh and me and dh have them too !! I just love sneaking around on the early hours once they are all asleep delivering them . Yep I really love Christmas

speakout · 07/12/2018 06:32

You don't need to do christmas at all- it's not the law.

My family love stockings, I do them for everyone.

The person that loves them the most is my 85 year old mother.

GoblinsAndGhouls · 07/12/2018 06:32

Um, what do you put in a stocking?

I've never done them! What are we missing out on?

speakout · 07/12/2018 06:34

Depends on the age!

speakout · 07/12/2018 06:37

The whole thing of hanging the stocking on christmas eve was a big thing for ny kids.

Just before bed, and leave out a biscuit and milk for Santa, a carrot for Rudolph, always the first thing they would charge down to open on christmas morning.

Etino · 07/12/2018 06:40

As @Artesia says, If your mum has suggested stopping stockings, do you not think maybe it’s her way of suggesting it’s a bit of a chore?!

Please tell me you do one for her at least.

Ohyesiam · 07/12/2018 06:40

Op tell yourself you art breaking tradition, by you’ve taken David Attenborough’s speech to heart. Your new tradition is not wasting the planets resources. You can be a green saint!

speakout · 07/12/2018 06:42

Must contain a satsuma and a coin- right at the bottom.

Otherwise, socks, a yoyo, small book, harmonica, toothbrush, slime or putty, candy canes, tobl;erone, expandable flannel, small bath products, small doll or figure, hair clips, chalks, art materials,.
For teens or adults, chocolate, bath bomb, miniature whiskey, playing cards, memory stick, headphones, any small gift - and stockings are handy for any gift too small to wrap, like earrings etc.
