My children are similar ages, we all have a stocking and put bits in each other’s secretly. It evolved when they were late teenagers. If it’s not fun for everyone involved, change it without guilt.

Micke · 07/12/2018 06:51

I don't remember when mine stopped (mum would probably do something if I asked I suppose) - probably about 13, but by then it was mainly satsumas anyway (in fact, I have a vague memory of telling mum it was OK, and not to worry about one next year, since I'd got to 6 satsumas), since small, cheap tat is a lot harder once you get older!

GoblinsAndGhouls · 07/12/2018 06:52

Ooh thanks! I'm going to do them this year...

Nearthebig40 · 07/12/2018 06:54

I still get them (see my user name Grin) and so does my older sibling Smile

IRememberSoIDo · 07/12/2018 06:59

I'm 39, married with two children and when I call into my parents house my stocking is there! It too is 39, falling apart but still there. My children think it's hilarious that granny still does stockings for us.

BlackBeltInPresentWrapping · 07/12/2018 07:10

To add to the satsuma or tangerine in the bottom of the stockings, we also follow the tradition of brand new shiny coins of small denominations to bring good luck (collect from the bank or post office), chocolate coins and one or two nuts in their shells including brazil, walnut and hazelnut.

It doesn't have to be a shop bought stocking - it can be homemade, or you can use a welly sock or even a pillowcase. Not everything will be wrapped - probably about half and half. The DCs are free to dig into their stockings when they wake up, without having to wait for the adults to stir. It gives us an extra half an hour at least! It usually leads to chocolate for breakfast, but once or twice a year, that's just fine.

Stockings are part of Christmas! How else are you going to start the day with a chocolate orange?!

How interested are the kids? Do a stocking secret santa where they do each other's? You could still fund it :)

HarrySnotter · 07/12/2018 07:22

It's just a tradition in some families Marilyn, not sure why you're so taken aback. We don't do it with adults in our family, but it sounds like lots do. Different strokes and all that.

HeronLanyon · 07/12/2018 07:23

We always knew our under tree presents were from mum and dad. Stockings were put out night before and then filled overnight (by Father Christmas) obvs and putbat the end of our beds. I did once catch a glimpse of my dad but think it was just cos Father Christmas asked him to help or something like that. Grin

LuthersCoat · 07/12/2018 07:23

My mum did my stocking until I was 31 (she passed away or she'd still be doing it now). It was important in our family! I hang the same stocking up as part of my Christmas decorations now and it makes me feel really festive Smile

If your kids aren't sentimentally attached to them though, don't bother!

Gigglebrain · 07/12/2018 07:23

Everyone gets in our house, it’s lovely to get a stocking of little presents.
Yabu 😂

@Ajaslipstick

Im with you on this one! Im also the youngest of 4 and felt very ripped off with these things. My brother is 10 years older than me so when my stocking stopped at 15, he had one until he was 25. Same with the xmas spirit/santa thing... when a 14 year old tells a 4 year old santa isnt real and the parents dont try to keep the spirit alive because the other 3 are too old its a bit pants.
My mum does bags for us now. A gift bag with out main present and a few little extras. Age range is now 32-23

Gwenhwyfar · 07/12/2018 07:27

I think last year was the first time I didn't get a plastic bag in my bedroom and I'm 41. I haven't liked the stocking since I was a teenager. I'd rather buy my own socks, shampoo, etc. I actually I'd rather buy my own everything except maybe one or two well thought through presents like a book someone knows I would like.

EeeSheWasThin · 07/12/2018 07:28

I did stockings for my DSDs the first Christmas they were at mine...seems to have stuck, ten years on. The presents have evolved and grown less in number (probably a Mac lipstick instead of a multipack from Superdrug) but they love them!

HarrySnotter · 07/12/2018 07:29

Ah come on Marilyn, does it really matter? No need to be sneery.

My mum did them for far too long - she always filled them with "novelty" presents which were sometimes quite expensive but always instant clutter which I felt bad throwing away... She used to post this old sick to me when I was away, and eventually it got misplaced and she never forgave me...

If you do stockings for adults, please don't send anything of sentimental value to them while they're traveling, and please fill them with consumables (toiletries and edibles) not knicknacks!

Gwenhwyfar · 07/12/2018 07:30

"How else are you going to start the day with a chocolate orange?! "

I still want the chocolate orange! Just not in a stocking :)

eggsandwich · 07/12/2018 07:30

I’ve never done stockings only presents, believe me thats enough to do the thought of Christmas stock gs would tip me over the edge I think.

blueskiesandforests · 07/12/2018 07:31

That was meant to say sOck not sick. She didn't post sick to me. She's not that peculiar Blush

GaryBaldbiscuit · 07/12/2018 07:34

I work, as is normal for someone in my position.
5 days a week, sometimes 6.

i think we all find christmas exhausting surely?
