Dd is nearly 30 and had a toddler style melt down last week when I suggested she sleep at her house Xmas eve and her and bf do stockings for each other!
Instead she is suggesting 3x dbs bunk in together so she can have a room here!!
*she lives less than ten mins away!!

adaline · 07/12/2018 10:42

We stopped doing stockings when I moved out. I don't spend Christmas at my parents' anymore as we have pets and my mum is allergic - I tend to go over on Christmas Eve for food and gifts instead!

bellinisurge · 07/12/2018 10:58

My parents did them for us until we left home and if we were home for Christmas. But this was the 70s and 80s and we had satsumas, nuts , chocolates/sweets and pen related things.
Hope they do one for you.

skybluee · 07/12/2018 11:41

I think that sounds really nice, but only if they're wanted. in your original post you said they weren't really wanted, so i'd ask your children. i also hope you get some nice presents from them and they appreciate you doing the stockings for them.

Disfordarkchocolate · 07/12/2018 11:51

My favourite part of Christmas is the stockings, however, it's not yours so stop. No need to add to your stress.

To be fair I stopped getting presents or having a Xmas at about 18 19 and it did really upset me. I was raised to love Xmas and feel the joy of receiving presents all beautifully wrapped only to have it stop as I got older

Why does Christmas stop just because you aren't getting a stocking any more? Our Christmasses now the DCs are older I would say are better. They lie in till god knows what time anyway so stockings would be barely opening by lunch.

We have replaced the stocking opening ritual with lots of other special things. My lot still absolutely love Christmas even though they don't get stockings.

I do a quiz. Someone does the name places for the table all of which are clues you have to work out. Stockings for me are something for small children. Yes I did carry on till the last was 18 but there is a limit in my book

Roussette · 07/12/2018 12:34

I don't think that's awful at all. Snow obviously did something right. Her DD loves Christmas and wants to be with her parents.

Mine are the same.

I have 4 adult DC A few years ago I stopped stuffing actual stockings and just do a few presents each under the tree, including the inevitable chocoate coins and chocolate orange. Thuis year they have decided on a sort of secret sants - one present each Suits me! I loathe and detest wrapping!

nottakingthisanymore · 07/12/2018 12:44

Never realised stockings were so popular until I joined mn. We never had them as kids just presents delivered by Father Christmas.

Roussette · 07/12/2018 13:01

Marilyn I think the toddler tantrum is a figure of speech to be honest. I would say one of my DDs is prone to having a tantrum. It's not a tantrum, it's just her being her in her own inimitable way. She doesn't lie on the floor and kick her feet or scream, she just has an easily ignorable strop

Notso · 07/12/2018 13:06

Urgh, DH has two of these in his family. It's a royal pain in the arse and means we can never just invite PIL for Christmas Dinner, we have to invite the overgrown chicks and their families as well.

Snowwontbelong · 07/12/2018 13:14

Was light hearted!! She has younger siblings who still 'believe' and doesn't want to miss out sharing in their magic!!
Her bf is apparently thrilled to be invited to join us - must be doing something right!!

DHs family did this well, they moved from kiddy stockings to a sort of secret stocking, where each adult made up one for another, to kids again when the next generation came along.

There was a time DH (18+) was tasked with making one for a younger sibling to bridge the gap.

expatmigrant · 07/12/2018 14:47

Mine are 25 & 18 and still love their stockings. I even still put Nerds in them. TBF on them, I've never contemplated stopping them.

delboysskinandblister · 07/12/2018 15:33

I was 35 when I said this is a bit silly now
secretly misses Santa's stocking Envy

JellicleCat · 07/12/2018 16:22

I decided to stop doing a stocking for dd this year. I am so going to miss her coming into bed with me to open it. She is 23 and has left home Shock

loosenknot · 07/12/2018 18:02

my kids have made me stockings since they were nine. they pretend they are from FC. I make them stockings. and I make my mum and my dad stockings. I think they're my favourite thing. it IS harder when they get older though to find stuff that isn't tat but isn't extortionate.

We have five advent calendars this year including one the kids made for me and one that I got half price as I bought it yesterday!

SilverApples · 07/12/2018 18:11

This thread is cheering me up, I’m delighted that other adults do stockings for each other. And the scattered comments of a few Grinches is just the seasoning it needed.

AllTakenSoRubbishUsername · 07/12/2018 18:14

We have a tradition in our house - everyone staying on Christmas Eve gets a stocking, but we don't do them for anyone else. The grown ups get things like mini gin bottles, small gadgets for the kitchen, socks, posh cooks ingredients, earbuds, anything like that. It doesn't take long and I love wrapping and filling them!

hunibuni · 07/12/2018 18:19

The DCs have a goid huff every year I mention stopping stockings but tbf they would rather have the stocking than presents (and 3/4 are adults). The girls tend to time the need for new foundation, mascara, eyeliner and eyeshadow so that they run out a week few days before Christmas and they get facemasks, socks etc. DS gets an xbox live voucher, earphones, socks, smellies and turkish delight he's no child of mine. The only ones with plastic toys are the very young family members, the rest of us get socks, favoured sweets/snacks/mini bottles and puzzle books. Can't see us stopping anytime soon Grin

ApolloandDaphne · 07/12/2018 18:20

We still do stockings in this family even though DP and I are in our 50's and our DD's are in their 20's. My DPs do ones for each other and they are aged 78 and 80! DD1's DP is coming for Christmas this year. He shall have a stocking too!

Coggle · 07/12/2018 18:24

Time to stop, especially as not appreciated. Stockings are for children.
