To think some people are a bit precious about shoes in house

I visit someone weekly with work and use a room which is literally 6 foot steps from the front door yet I have to take my shoes off.

AIBU to feel this is a tad annoying?

Their house , their rules .
If you want to come in my house you take your shoes off . I have no idea what cack you could’ve stepped in on your way to me ..

KC225 · 04/12/2018 16:39

Here in Sweden its the norm. I get it when people are trudging through a foot of snow but its all year. Drives me nuts. Up to the age of 10 the chikden had to take their shoes off before going into the classroom. There was a toilet cubicle off the classroom and the children had to use in whilst wearing socks. Swear it turned my stomach.

SpoonBlender · 04/12/2018 16:40

YABU. Shoes off in the house if thats the local rule. Don't come in and spread your street muck around while everyone else is in socks/barefoot.

JustABetterPlayer · 04/12/2018 16:41

It’s annoying but it’s their house and their rules.

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 04/12/2018 16:46

It's the same in Canada KC - everyone takes shoes off the instant they come in the door. Including any workmen/cleaner etc. Never, ever have to ask.

Oddsocksandmeatballs · 04/12/2018 16:46

Wear overshoes? We have to keep shoes on for safety reasons when working in the home but we use overshoes (or change into clean shoes that are only worn inside the home).

Shoes on - you don't ask guests to get undressed it's rude.

Fortunately, none of my friends are stupidly precious.

I'm totally fine about it if that's the rule in somebody else's house but what annoys me is when my in laws come into my house and make snide comments about my husband and I keeping our shoes on. They go on about it constantly. It's our house so sod off. And if you don't like it feel free to not come into our house.

Sausagefingers9 · 04/12/2018 16:52

The pavement is filthy, why would you want that muck in your house?

I have wooden floors downstairs so don’t feel like I have to ask guests to take their shoes off as I can easily clean the floor. If I had carpets I would definitely ask.

blueskiesandforests · 04/12/2018 16:55

Yawn this is done to death.

Taking your shoes off isn't getting undressed any more than taking a hat off or a coat off is. Most people think it's rude to wear your outdoor coat and hat in someone else's living room.

People who get offended about shoes off houses have presumably never ventured outside their own tiny, small minded social circle - go to Japan and visit someone and refuse to take your shoes off, see how much offence you can cause... Taking shoes off in the house is the cultural norm in loads of countries.

I've got cream carpets. Take your shoes off or stay outside.

Greenglassteacup · 04/12/2018 16:58

Shoes off in this house. I don’t see it a a massive ask tbh

VikkiStMichael1 · 04/12/2018 16:59

Sorry I didn’t know it was ‘done to death’ I’m new.

Yes I understand the dogs being a problem more than dust or mud. Especially when so many people don’t clean up after them.

Think I’ll wear my flip flops in future and put my shoes back on in the car it’s easier

Umm don't come to my house then! My baby crawling around on our carpet..I don't want your dirt stamped into my carpet for my little one to crawl in!

VikkiStMichael1 · 04/12/2018 17:02

Who would want cream carpets?? Might look good but totally impractical

This house has laminate flooring all downstairs so for the sake of 6 footsteps I think it’s OTT

You can buy plastic overshoes/covers from ebay very cheaply. We have a box in our front porch. Visitors, delivery and tradespersons have a choice of shoes/boots off or they can put on the plastic covers. We are fully carpeted throughout the house - anyone who won't take their shoes off or put on a plastic cover doesn't get through the front door.

Paddingtonthebear · 04/12/2018 17:05

We live in a rented house with brand new beige carpets throughout. Shoes come off at the door! And yes I have kids, and a dog. No dirty feet on the carpet rule applies to all!

Badbadbunny · 04/12/2018 17:05

Who would want cream carpets??

It's a free country - I want cream carpets and have them throughout. I think they look lovely. If you don't like them, that's your choice. My house, I do what I like!

MeadowHay · 04/12/2018 17:06

These threads appear periodically on MN and are very polarised. Personally I think YABU because the easiest way for me to keep my floors clean is for people not to wear their shoes in my house - we walk on mud, leaves, dirt, animal feaces and urine, litter, ends of cigarettes, dust, etc etc...and just because you can't see visible detritus doesnt mean that trace amounts are not on your shoes, spreading muck and germs about. I don't want that in my house. I always ask people to take their shoes off, and I provide shoe covers for people who don't want to, or can't take them off. The only exception I will make is for tradespeople that for H&S reasons cannot be without their PPE. I don't see any other valid reason for people to bring all that dirt into my house, it's such an easy thing to do to make your house much cleaner with zero extra effort.

MeadowHay · 04/12/2018 17:07

User WTF? Why would anyone do that? That is bizarre. Not surprised you're annoyed, that's really rude of them.

Fatbutt · 04/12/2018 17:08

we have a slightly passive agressive wooden sign up - it says remove your shoes or scrub the floor - your choice

We don't necessarily 'enforce' it, but we do prefer no shoes on the carpeted areas

BelindaBellender · 04/12/2018 17:10

If people want cream carpets then why shouldn’t they?!Hmm Not that I could- been there, done that- didn’t workGrin

The amount of greb balls, chewing gum and tab-ends I see on the pavements tells me I’m quite within my rights to ask people to take their shoes off... although in 18 years of having my own home I haven’t actually had to ask anyone- they all do anyway (or ask if they should) out of common courtesy.

Beechview · 04/12/2018 17:12

Everyone I know has a shoes off home. The guy from Virgin media came round the other day and he put cloth overshoes on. I was impressed.
