To think some people are a bit precious about shoes in house

I visit someone weekly with work and use a room which is literally 6 foot steps from the front door yet I have to take my shoes off.

AIBU to feel this is a tad annoying?

Our last house had flagstone or wood floors, shoes left on as we had a dog and socked feet freeze on flags even in summer.
Now I have laminate and carpet so we take our shoes off and people see them and tend to take theirs off, even workmen.
If people left their shoes on I wouldn't make a fuss but it hasn't been an issue.

seventhgonickname · 04/12/2018 17:15

I think because it's a rural area shoes come off in most people's houses unless they have stone floors

Greenglassteacup · 04/12/2018 17:19

My partner’s parents are the only people who seem to have a problem with removing their shoes in our house. She walked dog shit up our stairs once and still rolls her eyes when I ask her to take her shoes off. Fucking rude

BertramKibbler · 04/12/2018 17:20

In Asia it’s completely normal. They all leave their shoes outside the front door. I married an south East Asian. We don’t wear shoes indoors. Now I’m used to it the alternative does seem kind of grim

mindutopia · 04/12/2018 17:21

You literally have to walk through 4 inches of mud, oil and horse shit to get to our house (live on a farm lane). So no one wears shoes in our house and it’s never been an issue. Everyone takes their shoes off around here.

Worieddd · 04/12/2018 17:23

YABU

Shoes off household here

VioletCharlotte · 04/12/2018 17:23

I don't know why anyone would want to keep their shoes on indoors. Shoes are for wearing outside. I don't want dirt from the pavement in my house!

Greggers2017 · 04/12/2018 17:24

Nobody wears shoea in my house, I don't care who they are. They take them
Off by the front door or stay stood on the door mat.

DoesItGetAnyBetter · 04/12/2018 17:24

Long time lurker here but this conversation really boils my piss.

I too have cream carpet in our lounge. I have 2dc and have managed to keep it clean for 8 years because we take our shoes off. However I have a certain friend that walks in wearing her shoes every time she visits. Every time she visits I have to ask her to take them off, so now I don’t invite her.

With regards to wood floors perhaps the owner doesn’t want it denting with healed shoes, perhaps they don’t want the shoes you wear in public toilets traipsed through their home. Either way it’s their rules and you should respect them.

dinosaurglitterrepublic · 04/12/2018 17:28

I don’t understand why you wouldn’t take your shoes off. Why do you want dirty shoes being walked through your house?

tictac86 · 04/12/2018 17:53

Shoes off in my house now. We have brand new carpet and i want to keep it clean

TabbyMumz · 04/12/2018 18:05

Always amazes me that whatever people are, ie shoes off or shoes on, they think everyone is the same as them....both sides say "everyone I know is shoes off/on.", which they apparently think that absolutely means they are right. Just accept that there is a mix of people in any country who chose to do what they like. Our family is shoes on, but I don't doubt there are people in our street who are shoes off families. I tend to think it's pretty impossible to keep homes germ free, and we have a door mat where people can wipe their shoes if needed. We also have a cat, who I am sure traipses through all sorts of germs on his paws.

Kintan · 04/12/2018 18:10

Last week I would have agreed with you, but we just got new carpets and there's no way anyone's walking on them with their outdoors shoes!

londonrach · 04/12/2018 18:12

Yabu. Of course outdoor shoes that have been in mud, dirt and possible dog poo come off before you go indoors. Do you sit with your coat on inside?

londonrach · 04/12/2018 18:13

I dont know a single house where you keep shoes on.

Over the years I have had to scrub dog shit out of a long hall carpet, try to remove ground in dirt that had been walked in from underneath the decking, anyone that has ever seen 20 year old muck from under decking will understand the power it has to adhere, scrape chewing gum out of a mat, and try to remove car oil from stair carpet and a bedroom. Then there was the bird poo that was walked in.

Of course those who think it is precious to remove shoes may not have carpets, but in rentals you don't have a choice. You also have to consider bringing in the remains of spittle and snot from those charmers that spit on the pavements and blow their nose without a handkerchief, on to the ground, vomit and human excrement and pee, all of which gets trodden in and spread liberally around so that there are traces of it a distance from where it was deposited.

So, yes I do ask for shoes to be removed upstairs regardless and downstairs if I consider it necessary, although it is easier to clean a wooden floor. Not so good when stiletto heels leave little pits in the wood though, so having realised too late about that, they have to come off now.

I respect the wishes of others, they may want a germ free home because of illnesses or religion, and I prefer not to wear shoes indoors anyway.

DoesItGetAnyBetter · 04/12/2018 18:22

You are absolutely right TabbyMumz- Live & let live.

However you sound like a very nice, reasonable person that wouldn’t be offend if I asked you not to wear your shoes on my carpet. Unfortunately others would be less offended if you gave them a poke in the eye.

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 04/12/2018 18:34

Shoes off in the kitchen before entering the living room here, that applies to us and guests too.

GobbyMcGobshite · 04/12/2018 18:34

The people who are worried about outside germs touching their floor must never clean their floor Confused I'm very happy with people wearing their shoes in my house because I know it will be sanitised with the steam cleaner.

Do you share plates and cups or is that not allowed? Do you have separate washing machines for each family members stuff? Are your sofas cleaned each time someone sits in them to get rid of bum germs? Are your sheets washed hourly because of dust mites? It's ridiculous Confused how many of you shoe off people have pets?

TabbyMumz · 04/12/2018 18:35

Doesitgetanybetter...No I wouldn't be offended if asked to remove shoes as I would be a guest in their house...Although I might be a tad embarrassed if my socks aren't up to scratch or if I had to go bare feet. I just hate it when the shoes off people try to put down the shoes on people

DoesItGetAnyBetter · 04/12/2018 18:41

Absolutely TabbyMumz. Each to their own and but don’t be offended by the other.

HoustonBess · 04/12/2018 18:42

Would you roll around in all the nooks and crannies on the average pavement? That's what's coming into the house, getting smeared on the furniture, consumed by children etc. It's not precious.

DoesItGetAnyBetter · 04/12/2018 18:43

TabbyMumz..... I also wouldn’t judge you on your socks or bare feet - If a ‘friend’ judged me based on this they could piss off!!!

NameChangeToAvoidBeingFound · 04/12/2018 19:03

Shoes off in my student house because it's all wood floors and gets manky quickly, shoes off in my actual home because we've just got new carpets, before that shoes off because there are usually toddlers crawling around and it's grim to get goodness knows what about in the carpets especially as babies put their hands in their mouths.
