To think some people are a bit precious about shoes in house

I visit someone weekly with work and use a room which is literally 6 foot steps from the front door yet I have to take my shoes off.

AIBU to feel this is a tad annoying?

Being "precious" is thrown around in the same way that calling people "snowflakes" is. It's done purely to patronise someone else and belittle their opinion, not to mention it's a pretty pathetic way to make a point. Besides, it's not precious to not want filth from outdoors trodden into the carpets. Each to their own. Let's stop judging others for making different choices.

@GobbyMcGobshite it’s not so much the germs hence why I don’t feel the need for a steam cleaner but the actual lumps of chewing gum, chunks of dog shit or slimy winter mud being traipsed through the house.

As for bums on sofas, well, I don’t remember the last time I saw anyone shuffling down the pavement on their arse so no need for worrying about dog shit or chewing gum there.

As for plates, cups and laundry.. well they’ve been washed which is enough for me.

xJessica · 04/12/2018 19:16

Precious?! Really? There's all sorts on those pavements, from vomit to dog poo to chewing gum to god knows what else.... I don't want that brought into my house. I read an article about it recently and it proved what I've always said.

Moominfan · 04/12/2018 19:16

When I had wooden floors I wasn't fussed. Now we have carpets and there so high maintenance. Don't need dirty shoes on them as well

abacucat · 04/12/2018 19:20

Absolutely HATE having to take my shoes off in houses with dirty floors.

LittleMissBrainy · 04/12/2018 19:26

I take my shoes off but only because I'm more comfortable walking either barefoot or in socks. I don't ask others to do it, although I find most people do.

To the people who insist though, can I ask if you're ok with people walking barefoot especially in summer when people tend not to wear socks. If a bit of muck gets your goat, what does bare feet do? (Especially if someone has manky feet.)

SerenDippitty · 04/12/2018 19:35

I wouldn’t be offended if asked to remove my shoes in a carpeted house but would be if I was expected to walk around in stockinged feet on hard floors.

ASatisfyingThump · 04/12/2018 19:40

Shoes off household here too, and if you can't (workman etc) then I expect you to wipe them properly before entering. You can barely move for all the dog shit on the pavements around here and I spend enough time cleaning it off the kids shoes without having it tracked through the house too.

christmas18 · 04/12/2018 19:40

I have a strict no shoes rule
I’ve found 99% of visitors to my home to be fine with that except 1 midwife who was just horrible wetried to explain nicely in the end she laid out newspaper for her as she wouldn’t take them off

christmas18 · 04/12/2018 19:41

*dh not she

Junkmail · 04/12/2018 19:41

I actually don’t care if it’s annoying to remove shoes—my rule is no shoes on the carpets. I’m fine for people to wear shoes in my downstairs as it’s all flat floors but I’m not having my carpets marked by dirty shoes. It’s a lot more effort for me to shampoo the carpets than it is for guests to remove shoes.

switswoo81 · 04/12/2018 19:43

How do people with very strict rules manage when having to make numerous trips to the car for eg today I unloaded baby into jumperoo then shopping bags into kitchen then came back for flight risk 3 year old who I left in car seat . do you take shoes off each time you go in and out.
i kick off shoes myself coming in but wouldn’t be that bothered by it either way.

MissMooMoo · 04/12/2018 19:48

I am from Canada. Everyone takes their shoes off as soon as you enter the house.
This pops up all the time under "strange things Brits do" on the Canadians in the UK fb group I am a member of

Ubertasha2 · 04/12/2018 19:51

When I finally own my own home, no shoes will be allowed.

The amount of disgusting men who spit and wee on the street and the thought that you may have stepped in it, is reason enough for me.

AnnettePrice · 04/12/2018 19:51

Shoes off in the house and I think I shouldn’t even have to ask.

This might be very outing to say this...
don’t other people wear slippers, have guest slippers for visitors and when visiting take their own slippers with them (or even have travel slippers)?
I thought this was normal, all my friends and family do the same.
Are we in a strange slipper wearing cult and never knew it ? 🤣

Santasushi · 04/12/2018 19:52

‘I visit someone weekly with work’. What do you do for a living?
If you are going in to other people’s houses you should respect their rules.
When working in the community I used to carry socks in my bag because I don’t wear them usually. If I was asked to remove my shoes I could put my socks on.

I am precious about my flooring, it cost a bomb and looks lovely. If my dc can remove their shoes so can any guests.

TellerTuesday4EVA · 04/12/2018 19:52

I always comment on shoes in house threads & usually get my arse handed to me but yes if you're going to a shoes off house you take your shoes off!! We are a shoes off house, always have been, always will be!!

megletthesecond · 04/12/2018 19:53

Yabu.
My house has hard floors and neutral stair carpet. It's still a shoes off house. I don't want poop, spit and grime walked in here.

user1471521128 · 04/12/2018 19:53

@meadowhay because that's the way they are - if we don't do exactly as they do, make exactly the same choices as them, we're wrong and they tell us constantly. Funnily enough we have limited contact.

IAmMumWho · 04/12/2018 19:54

Myself my mums my MiL n FiL and BiL all have shoes off at the door rule. It's polite to follow someone's house rule.

CottonSock · 04/12/2018 19:54

Are you MY relative? That wiped mud and shit over my carpets, and still doesn't remove shoes..

SerenDippitty · 04/12/2018 19:56

AnnettePrice I wear slippers around the house. But mostly to be comfortable, not for reasons of hygiene. We have hard floors downstairs and they are cold to walk on even in socks.

Mamabear12 · 04/12/2018 19:57

Shepherdspieisminging, I am assuming you don’t live in London, so never have seen the sidewalk covered in vomit? Which, yes I have seen several times!! Also, bird shit, foods and rubbish tossed. Yes dog shit and pee as well. But it’s not just the dog shit that is on the side walk...

RangeRider · 04/12/2018 19:58

Who would want cream carpets?? Might look good but totally impractical
Not impractical if you take your shoes off and don't have pets. (I have pets so I have wooden floors & a steam mop, but I do take my shoes off)
