To ask why anti-Vacciners would prefer polio over autism

I'm not here to cause a fight but I'm genuinely interested in why people who are against vaccines use the autism card? Like medically it's proven that it doesn't but even so why would you prefer that your child had an eradicated illness rather than autism?

Agree with everyone who says the diseases we vaccinate against are so far removed from every day life (thanks to vaccines), that they don't resonate with people.

Autism absolutely does resonate, even though vaccines don't cause it. The fear of autism outweighs the fear or measles, mumps, rubella, polio - any of those diseases.

It's the same thing with Brexit. The EU was established as a response to the unimaginable (for us) devastation and tragedy caused by two world wars. The need for Europe to come together was considered crucial.

The effects of those wars don't mean anything to people today - they don't understand the need for multilateralism at all any more, so what we see is what is happening. The disintegration of those ties, and the rise of nationalism. The very thing that lead to WWII.

There's a lot of irony in both these situations.

Because people think polio is a temporary illness affecting one individual whereas autism affects the wider family and is lifelong
Also there are ‘degrees’ of autism
You don’t know how badly your child would be affected by it
Some people choose not to take that risk

This is debated every single week.
Look at the old threads, the answers for and against are all there

Yes, yikes, I'd not thought of that comparison, I have to agree. Someone on the radio yesterday said 'what we learn from history is that we don't learn from history.'
