AIBU to wonder when woman started obsessing over their lady garden?

I had the misfortune of watching Naked Attraction and was shocked at the lack of pubes...and how people were berated for having a postage stamp sized amount. The men’s view also seemed to be strange where there was a definite trend for those looking like a plucked turkey.

I dabbled with a Brazilian when I was in my twenties but soon stopped when I realised it was a complete waste of time and money.

I now have a full bush and I love it. I really don’t see the appeal of shaving/waxing to have horrid regrowth and ingrown hairs or to look like a child.

AIBU to think we should all band together and let our lady gardens flourish to turn the tide on this degrading trend?

Bald fannies and willies look awful. A bit of hair disguise is a good thing.
As for messy periods, that is not the case when you use tampons or moon cups.

greenpop21 · 03/12/2018 17:27

I know willies are bald, I mean pubic area.

WindinTheWillowsLover · 03/12/2018 17:34

Pursefirst
I get waxed every 4-5 weeks and have never really had a full-on, 70's-style bush. I just personally don't like the idea of it, but each to their own

How old are you?

Can we hit this one on the head once and for all?

The 1970s were NOT 'peak bush' time.

Some posters here - they are clearly youngsters- talk as if The Bush was something that only existed in the 70s, along with flares and tank tops.

It also sounds quite condescending, as if it were a passing fashion trend and that women who have pubic hair are BEHIND THE TIMES.

I don't know when removing pubic hair became so common, but it certainly passed me by.

I had my DCs in the late 80s and no one ever talked about midwives or drs seeing your bush and it being something to be ashamed of, or removed before childbirth.

It's actually a recent fad to remove it , not something that has been the default setting with the 70s being the era of The Bush.

That’s not the case for everyone.

LuluJakey1 · 03/12/2018 19:08

I just take the lawn mower to mine and do the edges with the strimmer.

rainandsnow7 · 03/12/2018 19:14

I feel VERY itchy if I let it grow. I can't bear it, so have to shave it. How do people with a full bush not feel itchy? I've shaved since I was a teenager (I used to swim...) so I can't remember ever feeling comfortable with hair.

Ollivander84 · 03/12/2018 19:16

@rainandsnow7 I only itch if I shave it and then let it grow back. It's the in between bit that seems to itch

KurriKurri · 03/12/2018 19:24

People probably started obsessing at around the same time they started referring to pubic hair as a 'lady garden'.

It's pubic hair, it's a thing people have, if it were deeply unhygienic and led to rabies, plague, stench, infection or scared away potential sexual partners, evolution would have weeded it out by now. All the women with pubic hair would have been unable to pass on their genes and only natural baldies would remain.

But that hasn't happened - we women with pubic hair are still going strong and managing to lead reasonably sensible lives.

And obviously any man who suggests you need to remove a perfectly natural part of your body for their benefit should be told to fuck off immediately.

greenpop21 · 03/12/2018 19:26

Natural, fully grown pubic hair doesn't have blunt ends so doesn't itch. It also cushions you from any irritation or chafing from underwear.

Gwenhwyfar · 03/12/2018 19:47

" I’m also pretty confused by the idea that swimming costumes pose a major issue to those going au naturelle confused"

Well because of the bikini line I suppose. You're very lucky if you don't have any hairs poking out.
I have a leg suit so don't have to worry about it.

Gwenhwyfar · 03/12/2018 19:49

"Early noughties, right? Although far from unheard of, most heavy-duty forms of scaping were fairly unusual when I was at university in the mid to late 90s... but judging by time spent in changing rooms etc things changed not long after."

Yes, I agree that's when it changed. You can look at films from the 90s and the women are neatly trimmed, but not bald.

Hellsbells35 · 03/12/2018 19:50

Thanks for the replies! Seems the bush growers outweigh the shavers slightly - which gives me some hope. I have a 4 month old daughter and don’t want her to grow up to feel all this pressure to shave every hair from her body. There were some really interesting replies about how shaving pubes so much is a very recent epidemic. In reply to one poster, when I go swimming in predominantly submerged in water so don’t worry about stragglers. It’s not disgusting- it’s just hair?! Get over it Wink

OP I have a 18 yr old and 15 yr old DD and they have trim. They have told me that it is widely thought of as disgusting to have pubes by their peers -male and female. That horrifies me. So far they are resisting.

DarthLipgloss · 03/12/2018 19:55

I tidy mine up with a razor, its more old fashioned triangle than full bush. I have waxed it off in the past just to see what it was like. I have no preference either way but DP prefers me with my 'fluff'.

Destinysdaughter · 03/12/2018 19:56

I find it ironic when pp say they do it for hygiene reasons. You are actually potentially more at risk of contracting an STI, especially herpes, which one in six pp have, due to the nicks and cuts caused by shaving!

Sparklesocks · 03/12/2018 19:57

I don’t think naked attraction is representative of pubic hair though, most people will have waxed especially as they are appearing on tv, and it’s all young people who are more likely to wax/shave it.

greenpop21 · 03/12/2018 19:57

I cold wax the ones at the top of my inner leg and those that escape swimwear. I am in my 40s. DH doesn't know any different but he was horrified when he saw Naked Attraction as was I.

greenpop21 · 03/12/2018 19:59

It's called muff diving for a reason people!!! Wink

willdoitinaminute · 03/12/2018 20:05

As a blonde with fine hair I never really had a lot of bikini line overflow so a quick shave or wax was sufficient. I never really understood deforestation until a friend was staying one weekend and ‘did’ her bikini line with the diy wax strips, her thick black pubic hair started at her knees. My eyes must have been out on stalks, it was a real education on not judging other people’s preferences. This was the eighties though so she still kept the sacred triangle.
It has a lot to do with fashion and peer pressure. I wouldn’t have dreamt of leaving the house with hairy legs in my twenties, and DH still thinks his lucks in if I shave them now.
Every generation has its own ‘thing’. My generation had smooth legs and shoulder pads. This generation remove all the hair you can’t see but grow it instead on their head or face. I do wonder whether men’s facial hair trends are just to compensate for emasculating their sack and crack.

ForalltheSaints · 03/12/2018 20:08

There's a diagram that shows fashions for the 'lady garden' getting smaller, as men's facial hair gets more. Starting about the early noughties.

81Byerley · 03/12/2018 20:08

It's definitely a fashion thing. I'd feel a bit iffy about a man who was only interested in a woman who had genitalia like a little girl's.

greenpop21 · 03/12/2018 20:11

How can it be a garden if nothing grows in it????

JacquesHammer · 03/12/2018 20:13

How? How is being a pubic hair free adult in any way like a little girl?

greenpop21 · 03/12/2018 20:19

How? How is being a pubic hair free adult in any way like a little girl?

Would have thought that was obvious!

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 03/12/2018 20:19

How can you not see the comparison with children?

Would you like to sleep with a
completely hairless man?

Full 70's bush over here too OP!

My DH does not have an issue with rubbing my clit - we just move the hair out the way. It's not difficult 🤷🏻‍♀️
