AIBU?

AIBU to wonder when woman started obsessing over their lady garden?

I had the misfortune of watching Naked Attraction and was shocked at the lack of pubes...and how people were berated for having a postage stamp sized amount. The men’s view also seemed to be strange where there was a definite trend for those looking like a plucked turkey.

I dabbled with a Brazilian when I was in my twenties but soon stopped when I realised it was a complete waste of time and money.

I now have a full bush and I love it. I really don’t see the appeal of shaving/waxing to have horrid regrowth and ingrown hairs or to look like a child.

AIBU to think we should all band together and let our lady gardens flourish to turn the tide on this degrading trend?

I trim but that's it. I've heard it be said it's "disgusting" to have underarm hair too. People don't think before they comment - i can only shave one armpit due to the amount of plastic surgery I've had in it
Pubic hair - I cant shave or wax due to being likely to get abscesses

Could it just be that hairy peiple are mote likely to get seriously into hair removal?

That sounds like an attempt to be provocative. The majority of modern women are unlikely to have allowed it to grow in the first place. It is more hygienic and men like it.

Early noughties, right? Although far from unheard of, most heavy-duty forms of scaping were fairly unusual when I was at university in the mid to late 90s... but judging by time spent in changing rooms etc things changed not long after.

How is it “an attempt to be provocative”? I was just curious about what sounded like invented or exaggerated issues.

Bullshit on both counts

Regarding ingrown hairs, cysts and infections - I think the problems tend to happen when the skin is broken. If you use electric clippers the skin isn't broken and less problems.

I wouldn't wax primarily because of cost. Around here a Hollywood is £50 - multiply that out every 6 weeks and the cost per year is staggering. Would much rather spend the money on something else. The one time I got waxed I hated it, was left with bad bruises.

Everyone should be free to do what they want without any judgement or negative comments. I hate all of the subtle (or not so subtle) digs about cleanliness and so on. Likewise if people want to not shave legs and armpits they should be completely free to do so. At the end of the day it's just (or should be) a personal preference.

Yeah I really hate the implication that having pubic hair is dirty, and pouring scalding wax on it and ripping it all out by the roots is more sanitary and a committment to our heath, and the delicate feelings of our partners.

I watched an episode of Naked Attraction where the young man preferred a totally hairless look yet was sporting a rather unruly bush himself Hmm I'm not too ken on double standards like that.

Despite being in my early-20s I prefer to keep my bush. I'll trim it once or twice a month but to be honest it's too much effort to do any regular hair removal. Also I recently went with a couple of friends to the sauna at a swimming pool when I was in Germany and having my bush made me feel weirdly less exposed Grin I did tidy up the sides with a razor but not matter how I do it, it always ends up all red and itchy within a matter of hours.

Always love these threads.

Shavers - it's more hygienic and you end up with pissy pubes if you don't 😂

Non shavers - people who shave look like a prepubescent child and only do it because of porn.

Never ever ends well.

Can I ask the shavers:

If no one was ever going to see it, would you still shave?

Lack of lady gardens probably became a thing when porn hit the internet and anyone could access it on their phones. 😢

I care for surgical patients of all ages, it seems quite common for pubic hair to thin out naturally when elderly; also having cared for women of all ages I can honestly say that there is no difference in women who have pubic hair or who don't have pubic hair in terms or odour, sweatiness etc

What matters is that hair or no hair your genitals are washed daily; twice daily at least if it's very hot, if you're in your period, if your obese or incontinent.

IME from being a woman who has dated quite a few men, men of all ages don't seem too bothered about whether a woman has pubes or not once you get down to it!

Personally I have to be quite careful regarding hair removal as I have sensitive skin whether waxing or shaving which can look worse than having hair.

Word of warning, one poor patient had reacted to her hair removal cream & was really embarrassed as she had bright red very sore bits. It was either Veet or Nair...

And to the poster whose midwives discussed her pubes in front of her, that is completely unprofessional!

I have always done it since I was about 14 and do it because I want to. None of my partners have cared either way. Up to each individual person

I’ve shaved and trimmed, neither are worth it for me. I’m prone to ingrown hairs and allow my pit hair to grow out in Winter for the same reason - I’ve had infected boils sprout in my pits that look like third nipples (areola included).

Mind, my vag has never been a pretty porny one anyway - it’s probably better off partially hidden. I really do think it’s better to be a bit of an ugly cow sometimes.

@skybluee I can use a trimmer under my armpit but not all the way as I have a skin flap so it's raised up and I catch it (OW!)
I'm immunosuppressed and also have Hidradenitis supprativa so lots of scarring from old abscesses

Climate change is behind it. Since the La Niña events of the mid to late 90s, temperatures have risen on average 2.3 degrees centigrade during summer months leading to much trimming and pubic deforestation. Scientists now fear there will be a rapid increase in global warming due to many women, and some men, turning the heating up during cooler months having lost the benefit of that this cover once providdd in areas such as the Mons Valley and The Rockies.

I get waxed every 4-5 weeks and have never really had a full-on, 70's-style bush. I just personally don't like the idea of it, but each to their own.

Just for the record: pubic hair is meant to protect your delicate lady parts. I would be concerned about potential hygiene issues RESULTING from shaving and waxing, as PPs have said.

I used to work in labour & delivery and saw very few shaved or waxed women. Even when we had to shave a woman for a C-section, we didn't take everything - just a little bit from the area where the incision would go.

(As you would expect, I go au natural. Hubby has never complained.)

skybluee · 03/12/2018 16:09

Ollivander84 if you have a skin flap I'd definitely not shave near that, sounds like it could be painful and like something you don't want to irritate.

I used to have problems until I switched to the electric trimmer, for me the skin being left fully intact is the most important thing. I did find razors very irritating but think it can depend on your skin, hair type etc. I really strongly feel everyone should be free to do what they want without being criticised - both ways.

I think it’s madness that some people pay a fortune every month for waxing just so they can have a girlish baldy fanny but each to their own

What do scientists advise? Should we all adopt a thick and curly merkin until deforestation is able to be reversed?

I disagree about porn not being about years ago ; it just meant that people had to go to out the 'special shops '

Nobody has said that porn is new. Porn has been around since the year dot.

It has become widely accessible (that is, available to everyone, not just men deliberately seeking it out in specific shops) in the last couple of decades.

And even though you (generic) personally might not use porn, or shave your pubes because of porn, the widespread fashion for the removal of pubic hair has come about because of the equally widespread availability of porn.
