This year my heart was broken by Toys "R" Us closing, just wondered what other shops that have closed do you miss?
This year we've had maplins, BHS I believe was this year, Mothercare will all be gone by next year summer too.
As a teen I used to love Bay Trading, and a shop called Tammy Girl.

The Pier

LizzieBennettDarcy · 02/12/2018 22:25

I used to get clothes in Etam and Richard Shops. And Ann Harvey - although it was plus size, they covered all the basics so well and it lasted. I'm still buying it off Ebay thankfully.

Godotsarrived · 02/12/2018 22:26

Woolies and BHS. Both were fab this time of year. BHS was underrated and had some great basic workwear options plus homewear and children’s clothes.
I hope Philip Green spends eternity spinning in hell.

Holidayshopping · 02/12/2018 22:32

Kew
Chelsea Girl
HMV
C&A
Dolcis -does that exist anywhere? I think all of the shoe shops in my high street are now phone shops.
I miss the Body Shop from the 80s when you could but shedloads for a tenner. It’s now so expensive! If I was going to spend that sort of money, I’d buy something actually decent.

Malaco · 02/12/2018 22:38

Woolies and BHS.
i still have Christmas decorations from Woolies and a t shirt from BHS.
I loved how Woolies sold just about everything.

RockinHippy · 02/12/2018 22:55

Woolworths & our local old fashion, John Lewis esque department store

leccybill · 02/12/2018 22:55

I do love Wilko though, it has stepped capably well into Woolies' shoes. Great range and good value.

ToffeePennie · 02/12/2018 23:13

Woolies, Tammy girl, ottakers, bhs (especially around this time of year), hypnotiq.
There was also a fab girlie version of new look/river island and you had to go downstairs at my local store, through a glittery “disco” curtain and down bright pink glittery steps to see the girls clothes. The changing rooms had silver curtains and there was a bright purple, glittery stripper style pole on a stage surrounded by lights and mirrors - you would get changed and do a sort of catwalk along the stage for your mates to see and they had really big squashy pink and purple chairs for them to sit on....I can’t for the life of me remember what it was called but it was a national chain and everything seemed super pricey to a 10 year old on £2 a week pocket money, so it was often a birthday treat. That was an amazing shop and had some gorgeous clothes for the 90s girl!
I’m pretty sure Debenhams won’t be around, it wouldn’t surprise me if hobbycraft and Argos aren’t gone too. I have a feeling the merge with Sainsbury’s is to help them consolidate their spending. Any big department stores are pretty much going to kick it as will larger, more expensive clothing shops (monsoon/river island maybe) simply because there isn’t the disposable income to drop £100/£150 on a dress for a wedding any more and primark have gotten much better at faking knock offs.

ToffeePennie · 02/12/2018 23:15

Ethel Austin was great for cheap tops and jumpers too. I used to get all my school basics from there. Gutted when they shut!

Longdistance · 02/12/2018 23:16

C&A, Bay trading and BHS. My best Christmas decorations are from BHS.

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 02/12/2018 23:16

And the Co-Op.

They used to have department stores, you know.

They were like a cross between John Lewis, BHS and Brentford Nylons.

Carpets, electricals, furniture, curtains, bedding, towels, clothes, haberdashery, nets, stationery and some beauty and perfume counters.

We used to go to one in Acton, West London which had a little tea bar that served tea and coffee in pyrex teacups.

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 02/12/2018 23:17

C&A!
Every now and again, I see a CANDA label in a charity shop and wonder who they were before it dawns on me.

And Allders.

Nicknacky · 02/12/2018 23:19

I’m so bizarrely disappointed with Kiddicare being gone!

Although I feel like most of my youth on the high street has disappeared.

Grilledaubergines · 02/12/2018 23:20

Ravel! Loved that shop!

C&A

Woolworths

Tammy

Chelsea Girl

Our Price

showmeshoyu · 02/12/2018 23:22

The camouflage shop, never could seem to find it.

Grilledaubergines · 02/12/2018 23:26

Oh, and Allders. Proper department store that was! Our local one was a maze of up and down little steps and little rooms off rooms, with every department imaginable, fantastic haberdashers. I really miss it. I love John Lewis as a department store but it’s not a patch on Allders and it’s quirky, “Are You Being Served” style!

Grilledaubergines · 02/12/2018 23:28

Show well, no one did, did they. That’s why it closed!Wink

Ohyesiam · 02/12/2018 23:33

Neal Street East
It was FULL of gorgeous exciting cheap stocking fillers.
Habitat.

Kaybush · 02/12/2018 23:36

@pearlkent Oh wow...you literally transported me back to 1981 when my younger, hitherto quite ordinary looking, sister came home wearing one of Miss Selfridge's pink frosted lipsticks.

It was July and with her tanned, flawless skin she just looked amazing. All her friends as well as my friends copied her, and that shop became our go to place for make-up. I can literally smell it now!

It was incredible how a sweep of lipstick on a young face could transform a person. Two people that summer said my sister was the most beautiful girl they had ever seen in real life Shock

NormHonal · 02/12/2018 23:38

I miss Woolworths very much. So many things I could have picked up very easily had the local branch still been open. Instead, I have to hope Amazon have it.

BasilFaulty · 03/12/2018 06:39

Does anyone remember the clothes shop Pilot and the other one Krisp??? Krisp was exactly like Bay Trading only a bit chavvier
Yes to MKOne (Think it started as Mark One?) used to spend hours in there.

BasilFaulty · 03/12/2018 06:44

How is Claire's Accessories still going???

Chocolatebourbons · 03/12/2018 06:51

BHS, Etam, Tammy Girl and a local independent fashion shop called Tatlas.
Suspect Monsoon might not be around much longer and a Debenhams in a nearby major city is closing soon.

TheFatberg · 03/12/2018 07:33

alltoomuchrightnow I forgot about B - I used to love the one on Carnaby Street. The make up was always in such lovely packaging. I think I had a sparkly eyeshadow in a jewelled pot, and an eyeliner in a wooden pot.

UnknownStuntman · 03/12/2018 07:39

Brizzle, it's actually the opposite. Homebase was started and built up by Sainsbury's. It was when they were taken over by the then owners of Argos (and subsequently the Australians) that it went into extreme difficulty.
