This year my heart was broken by Toys "R" Us closing, just wondered what other shops that have closed do you miss?
This year we've had maplins, BHS I believe was this year, Mothercare will all be gone by next year summer too.
As a teen I used to love Bay Trading, and a shop called Tammy Girl.

Enjoyed browsing all the magazines in Borders when I was a student and avoiding going to the library and reading actual books or journals. There was a big Borders on Magdalene Street in Oxford very close to the library I should have gone to instead. Also used to spend far too much in the Paperchase section of the store. (Think it's a Tesco metro now).

I remember Allders bazaar in Croydon! There is now a huge Primark opposite the Whitgift almshouses, not the same at all. In 1992 I thought the Whitgift centre was the height of sophistication, even when I saw the Chicken Tonight ad. being filmed there.

I also miss Blockbuster; they sold the best sweet popcorn as well as "share" bags of Poppets.

crappygilmore · 02/12/2018 18:57

Clayhanger in gandy street Exeter. Ditto Martian records. Spent half my teens in them getting my incense and second hand records of New Modle Army.

dayswithaY · 02/12/2018 19:07

Knickerbox - think I used to buy everything in there, ditto La Senza with those scented beads they used to wrap everything in.
Ravel, Cable & Co, Shelly's and Sasha for amazing shoes.
Mikeys fashion jewellery, I had a fake Tiffany heart necklace from there.
Loved Kookai so much - crop tops, little cardigans, boot leg trousers, aah the 90s - how I love you.
Miss Selfridge make up was the best, why don't they bring it back? Also their perfume was called Soft Talk and it was beautiful, I've been searching for something like it forever. Anyone remember they sold white pyjamas covered in pink lipstick kisses as well as underwear and robes.

I miss faith shoes by the time I could afford them they was gone :-( the Debenhams selection doesn't feel the same

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 02/12/2018 19:13

Other than Harrod’s stationary department it was probably the only other place where you could buy Hello Kitty, My Melody, Little Twin Star products.

There was an amazing Japanese shop in Swiss Cottage which was my small-girl idea of heaven - so much Sanrio stuff. I found some Little Twins Stars stickers I must have bought from there 30-odd years ago the other day.

Myself and my daughter were both made redundant earlier this year when poundworld went under. I loved working there and am still very sad about it. Sounds like a cliché but we really were a family. We had some great products, lots of brand name goods at fantastic prices. Had loads of my old customers coming up to me where I work now saying how much they miss it and how lovely and helpful all the staff were. I understand that it was one of the biggest retail job losses this year, about 5.5 thousand of us. Terrible shame, and a big loss to the high Street. I will always miss it. Had such a great time working there,am still in touch with many of my lovely ex colleagues. My heart goes out to the staff in other shops who are struggling. Poundworld will always hold a special place in my heart.

AimlesslyPurposeful · 02/12/2018 20:05

@SomethingNastyInTheBallpool

Re the thirty years old Little Twin Star stickers - What a great find!

PeoplesFrontOfJudith · 02/12/2018 20:05

I miss the old Granary Wharf in Leeds with the little stalls that sold Chinese and Indian things. Also the Corn Exchange and it’s permanent gangs of skaters, goths and emos hanging around

The Pier, Past Times and Au Naturale were great for gifts

I still have a cardi and fleece from C&A, and Habitat lamps. Mostly nowadays I just miss quality clothing in natural fabrics that last 20 years!

secretfreckle · 02/12/2018 20:07

Woolworths
John Menzies
MarkOne
Internacionale (at the Metrocentre when I was a student in Newcastle)
Tesco Home (at The Mall, Cribbs Causeway in Bristol. Still sob as I drive past where it used to be. Clothes, toys, stationery, house stuff and a Costa all under one roof)
East (lovely jewellery)
BHS (for school uniform, kids clothes and house stuff)
The Pier
Bay Trading
Pilot
If New Look go, I don't know what I'll do as most of my clothes come from there.

Badbadbunny · 02/12/2018 20:12

I think WHS survives on convinience

And it's often the "last man standing" in town centres for newspapers and magazines, especially all those less popular ones that supermarkets don't sell.

Anasnake · 02/12/2018 20:13

WHS has the airport market

Badbadbunny · 02/12/2018 20:14

C&A - we bought a lot of clothes there over the years

Allders - we virtually fitted out our house from them, furniture, mirrors, cushions/curtains, pans, etc.

sj257 · 02/12/2018 20:15

Woolworths 😓😓😓

elliejjtiny · 02/12/2018 20:16

Woolworths. Loved their pick and mix.

NotAYankYet · 02/12/2018 20:16

The Pier still exists in the US - it’s called Pier 1 over here. They have a decent website. They might do international delivery, not sure.

Babymamamama · 02/12/2018 20:17

Mark One. In the 80s it was great for cheap brightly coloured crop tops, pencil skirts etc. Those were the days.

circleoflife · 02/12/2018 20:28

Oh yes, Bow Bangles! Ours became a Claire's.
Yes to all the shoe shops including Shelley's. Shops are terrible these days. I have an old m&s top I got from a charity shop and the quality is really good, not like the shite they sell now Sad

Ryderryder · 02/12/2018 20:31

Woolworths. C and A and Richards shops

ABoozedMoose · 02/12/2018 20:36

Hyper Hyper and Kensington Market

AsleepAllDay · 02/12/2018 20:37

To one of the posters, Argos was bought by Sainsbury's so they'll be safe for a while

brizzledrizzle · 02/12/2018 20:39

Argos was bought by Sainsbury's so they'll be safe for a while

So was Homebase and it's not done them much good!

DorisDances · 02/12/2018 20:47

I hang on to a few Kew items as well - also Racing Green

Weedsnseeds1 · 02/12/2018 20:50

Was just about to say the same aboozedmouse.
I think Aflecks Palace in Manchester is still going though?

woodhill · 02/12/2018 20:51

pompom I used to wear iron maiden and Lillypout. I used to have the white make up box in the 80s from Miss Selfridge
