AIBU to think a mother shouldn't be getting pissed with her daughter?

The daughter is over 18, but both going to a hotel this weekend and happily announces they will be getting pissed

AIBU to think this is inappropriate?

OP posts:
AjasLipstick · 01/12/2018 06:43

I don't like it either OP. It's ugly somehow.

Innocentconglomeration · 01/12/2018 06:44

Ugly?

SnuggyBuggy · 01/12/2018 06:45

I don't see how it's better or worse than any other two people getting pissed.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 01/12/2018 06:49

Ugly? A strange word to use.

I think it’s fine. Can’t be an everyday thing fir them as they are off to stay in a hotel in order to do it.

LagunaBubbles · 01/12/2018 06:52

Ugly? Ffs there is nothing that can't be used by someone on MN to try and feel superior to others.

SoyDora · 01/12/2018 06:58

Ugly? How bizarre.
My DM doesn’t drink but I drink with MIL often (well, when not pregnant!). DH drinks with his dad. And his mum. I have been known to have a few too many at the pub with my dad!

Zfactorstar · 01/12/2018 06:59

She's 18. Chances are she's going to go out and get drunk anyway. See no problem if it's with her parents.

GaryBaldbiscuit · 01/12/2018 06:59

How old are your dc op?
under 18 I presume?

sounds great to me :)

Petalflowers · 01/12/2018 07:01

Why inappropriate? It may not be setting the best example but nothing wrong. I’m guessing she is just planning to go out and have a bit of fun with her daughter.

snitzelvoncrumb · 01/12/2018 07:01

Do you really care?

ChillyAutumnMorning · 01/12/2018 07:01

The answer to any question starting "AIBU to think a mother shouldn't..." is always going to be, "yes, yabu".

EmmaGrundyForPM · 01/12/2018 07:01

YABVU

They are both adults. I go away for weekends occasionally with my mum and we will drink alcohol. We won't get drunk because that's not our style but if we did it would be nobody else's business as long as we didn't misbehave.

SerenDippitty · 01/12/2018 07:02

OP would you have a problem with the mother getting pissed with people her own age?

I do think planning to get pissed is a bit pathetic, but I have no more issue with a mother and adult daughter doing it than any other two adult people.

BitchQueen90 · 01/12/2018 07:03

YABU. I've been drunk with my mum loads of times, and extended family too. Mind your own business.

blackcat86 · 01/12/2018 07:04

Two grown adults have a drunken night out together? Nope nothing wrong with that. DM doesn't drink but I often have a few too many with MIL who loves a bottle of red. She'll often message and say she's got a couple of bottles in. No one would bat an eye lid if DH and FIL went to the pub and got drunk together.

lovetherisingsun · 01/12/2018 07:06

Well, yes. If they're 12. The daughter is 18. Up to them.

whiskeysourpuss · 01/12/2018 07:10

I'm away with my mother for my birthday next weekend... OP is it ok if only one of us gets drunk? I'll have to give mum the bad news

KataraJean · 01/12/2018 07:12

My father was an alcoholic so the thought of being with any drunk adult is not something I relish.

At the same time, I would much rather my DC went drinking with people they know, in an environment which is safe.

I agree with the posters who are asking if the same questions would arise if it was a father-son night out.

Angharad07 · 01/12/2018 07:19

I’m probably the only person on Mumsnet who enjoys getting pissed with their mother in law

Chardeemacdennis1 · 01/12/2018 07:20

I've been drunk with my mum loads. She came on my hen doo. Me and my dad love a piss up, especially on ski holidays.

To the people that don't approve, what do you do at weddings, or christmas, or meals out with the folks, or family holidays? Just stay sober? How dull. I'm glad I get on with my parents and can hang out with them on a level rather than some formal victoriana relationship.

Angharad07 · 01/12/2018 07:20

I’ve also been drunk with my dad while out several times. Not so much with my mum as she’s not much of a drinker.

SoyDora · 01/12/2018 07:24

No, about 5 people have already posted that they drink with their MIL, including me!

whowantstea · 01/12/2018 07:25

Is it not better she's with her mother than god knows who god knows where?

Harrykanesrightsock · 01/12/2018 07:26

Are you my mother?

Powerbunting · 01/12/2018 07:29

On Christmas day I plan to drink rather too much with my mum and grandma. I will be rather drunk. Not pass out blotto drunk, because i can no longer take the hangovers.

I don't see why planning to get drunk with your mum/ daughter is worse than anyone else.

I also plan on new years eve to get drunk with which ever of my friends isn't pregnant or breast feeding.

Planned drinking is far better than accidental. You arrange taxis or lifts or hotels or both. You ensure childcare (if needed). You aren't at work the next day. You arrange a hangover brekkie.

Brilliant isn't it?
