To think if you call you child such a ridiculous name

southnownorth · 29/11/2018 15:57

They will get mocked at some point.

The child in question is called Abcde, pronouced ab-city.

Whilst it was very unkind to do it so the child can hear, I think it is the most ridiculous name I have ever seen.

MrPoppysGF

I read that during Victorian times a child might be named according to a situation. One boy was sadly called "Just Not Wanted", as the family was too poor for another child. Another boy was called "Friendless".

Oh my god Sad

AlwaysWantedToBeATenenbaum · 29/11/2018 20:07

There’s a little girl called Pirelli in the town where I live. Her dads apparently a fan of F1 so decided to name her after the tyres Shock

In Germany the registrar has a great deal of discretion and names that are 'humiliating' to the child (or have the potential to me) are not permitted. They also have to be clearly assignable to a sex, so you couldn't call your child (say) 'Alex' or 'Sam' without a full form or non-unisex middle name. I remember reading of a case in which the registration of a Marie Christin had been refused on the grounds that Marie can be a male name too (yes, as a middle name) and Christin as too unisex.

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 29/11/2018 20:34

to be, not to me.

WhyAmISoCold · 29/11/2018 20:52

"Doesn’t the registrar in the UK have the right to refuse a name if it is to stupid? I wonder if they have the same in the US. Maybe not!"

If this is true then they don't exercise this right. I work in an area where I see a lot of children's names, some with yooneek spellings, and some are bloody awful and spellings even more so. Parents can be fucking idiots in their desperation to be different.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 29/11/2018 21:02

It’s a bit of a faff to type as well. Why not just call her Qwerty or Asdfg?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 29/11/2018 21:28

Abcde - my autocorrect has nothing - NOTHING!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 29/11/2018 22:25

Moose

LOL

BonnieandHyde · 29/11/2018 22:30

I met a child called 'Epiphany' the other day. I shit ye not.

In a scouse accent it just rolls off the tongue 😬

VeggyGravy · 29/11/2018 22:49

I met a child called 'Epiphany' the other day. I shit ye not.

Is it wrong that I think that would make a lovely name? Blush Hermione, Persephone, Epiphany.

BonnieandHyde · 29/11/2018 22:57

Yeah but not with a scouse accent "Epifannnnnnneeeee"

Valanice1989 · 29/11/2018 23:06

There is a point when the law is allowed to intervene in naming a child in the UK. There was a case a few years ago where social services took a woman to court to stop her from naming her daughter Cyanide. I also vaguely remember reading about a couple who wanted to name their baby after a URL in order to win a competition or something, but were banned from doing so. I don't know where the threshold for legal intervention is, though.

The Puritans had some corkers:

Humiliation (Humiliation Hynde had two sons in the 1620s, he called them both Humiliation Hynde)
Fly-debate
No-merit (NoMerit Vynall was born in Warbleton, a haven of beautiful names)
Helpless
Reformation
Abstinence
More-triale
Handmaid
Obedience
Forsaken
Sorry-for-sin (Sorry-for-sin Coupard lived in Warbleton)
Lament (Lament Foxe was born in 1594)

Port1ajazz · 30/11/2018 17:52

Capri..... It really is the most ridiculas title , it really doesn't matter which country the child lives in (America i think ) she is going to spend her life explaining how to spell it !

Port1ajazz · 30/11/2018 17:54

Chodeofchodehill , absolutely spot on !

missbloomsbury · 30/11/2018 17:58

Well, I was told the other day of twins in a somerset primary called Mirror and. Glass!
Still can’t believe it ...

Ariesgirl1988 · 30/11/2018 18:00

I read about this the other day. As someone who worked with children I've come across some unique names and others just plain daft and stupid. Whilst it was out of line for the airline worker to do that in front of the child the parent's also have to realise that since they named her that and spelt it Abcde that not only are kids gonna be mean but generally speaking everyone that child meets will potentially take the piss can you imagine seeing that name on a CV? I would think it was some sort of joke if I read that name on a person's CV and thought ok they're not taking this seriously. There really should be someone who puts their foot down during registration and outright tell parent's that they're basically making it easier for their kids to be taunted and teased over their name harsh yes but sometimes it needs to be done Hmm

Ariesgirl1988 · 30/11/2018 18:07

The craziest names I've come across over the years honestly wtf were parents thinking, whilst doing my shopping a little girl was in my way and in the chaviest voice ever the mum loudly said Chardonnay! get out the lady's way I was like really you named your kid after a bottle of win! I love Martell's brandy but I wouldn't name my kid Martell or Brandy! another load of names I thought was too far was when I was on a train and heard a woman call out to her kids "Precious and Peaches" wtf! I can't say the names I've come across working with kids its too outing but honestly parent's please think before you desperately try to be different Hmm

Confusedbeetle · 30/11/2018 18:11

Yes this is a ridiculous name and the mother was crackers to inflict it on the child. However the airline woman was out of order and also posted things about other passengers, and the fact she had put some over head luggage on someones bag knowing there was a pizza in it. She should not be using social media in this way, a sacking offence

CanadianJohn · 30/11/2018 18:11

I don't understand why parents don't give their kids normal names. What does it matter, if a kid is called "John" or "Mary".

I have a friend called "Valentine". He was teased all his school days, but despite this wanted to call his son Valentine too. His wife, and several other people, managed to talk him out of it.

Whyislarryhappy · 30/11/2018 18:16

I thought it was bad when In ds nursery a child was called precious.
Also I worked with a Patience.
And went to school with a boy called Hardik

TurquoiseDress · 30/11/2018 18:35

YANBU!

It's not even a name, surely not??

It's just string of the first 5 letters of the alphabet!

...unless it's taken off as a yoo-nique name in certain areas? seems to have passed us by here in SE London Grin

Ariesgirl1988 · 30/11/2018 18:36

@Whyislarryhappy Yep I've heard of the name Patience again why would you name your child after a personality trait?!?! I've come across quite a few named Precious and I hate the name every time I see it I think oh spoilt brat and most times been proved right! its fine as a nickname but come on first naming your child Precious! and Hardik?!?! seriously wtf were the parents on drugs! LOL seriously I think sometimes parents just want the attention a "different, unique" will give them whether its good or bad attention Rolling my Eyes

manicmij · 30/11/2018 18:41

There should be restrictions on using made up and ridiculous name. In Scandinavia there is a register of names you can choose from albeit extensive.
